Mike O'Callaghan's American Legion team played the Fighting Coconuts today and won with a score of 17 to 16. It was a very close game as there was good hitting and fielding on both sides.
Hitting excellent for the Legion were Donnie Witmer 4 hits, and George Knox, Jim Hunter and Bob Vandenburg each with 3 hits apiece. Jerry Witter pitched a good game with one intentional walk to Gerry DeRidder.
For the Coconuts Gerry DeRidder was unstoppable. He went 4 for 4 and they finally decided to walk him in the last inning. Julian Puma and Bob Zelazny had 3 hits each and Kathy McDonald had a clutch hit in the 8th inning to put the Coconuts ahead temporarily.
The sun was a factor for both teams when playing defense. Sometimes the ball lined up with the sun and was uncatchable.
