The Dukes hosted the short handed Coconuts in a very close game today on Field D, with the Dukes providing a right fielder.
The Coconuts took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st, on hits by Joe LeTourneau and Tom Capozzi. The Dukes started fast with 5 in the 1st and 3 in the 2nd. Their big hitters were Herb O, George Vanderhyd , Frank Jacobs, and Greg Denny in the 1st and Hal Ridley and Don Lamay in the 2nd. Dukes 8 - 1 after two.
The Coconuts got rolling in the 3rd with six runs to close the game 7 - 8 Dukes, on fine hitting by Gary Burtner, pool player Mike Kasperek, Julian Puma, and Robbie Spitaleri, before a double play ended the rally. The Dukes did not score in the bottom for the 3rd, thanks impart to a nice running catch in deep right field by Dukes player George Vanderhyde to take a home run away from Greg Denny. (Greg had a couple words for George)
The hot hitting Coconuts put up two more in the 4th after 2 outs to take a one run lead on hits by Burtner, Capozzi and LeTourneau. 9-8, Coconuts. The Dukes tied the game at 9, on a Ken Meyer hit.
After holding the Coconuts scoreless in the 5th the Dukes scored 5 runs on 7 hits around a Larry Larson sac fly to retake the lead 14 - 9.
The Coconuts were scoreless in the top of the 6th. With the Dukes waiting to hit in a small rain delay the Comish came over and ask the score and called GAME OVER .
The final was 14-9 Dukes after 5 1/2 innings
