Solivita Recap

On Thursday, November 30, 2023, the Winter Haven travel team played the formidable Solivita Softball team.
The first game was an intense back-and-forth battle that kept us on the edge of our seats until the seventh inning. With a two-run lead, we were confident in our victory, but Solivita made an impressive comeback, scoring three runs and ultimately snatching the game away from us with a final score of 16-17.
Unfortunately, the second game did not fare any better for us. Solivita's offense remained relentless, while we struggled to muster up a total of 15 runs compared to their impressive 20.
Despite these challenging outcomes, we eagerly anticipate our next encounter with Solivita next month. The fire within us burns brighter than ever as we prepare to face them once again, determined to emerge victorious and reclaim our rightful place at the top.

Tuesday, November 27th

Managers today were Robert Spitaleri, Sam Lopez and Don Ouding, who just got back from deer hunting in Michigan.

Spit jumped out with 5 in the first and led 5-3-1 after 2 innings. All 3 teams scored in the third. Spit plated 4 in the top and Sam answered with 6 playing catch up and Don plated 3. That was nearly the end of scoring for Don's team as they only scored 2 more to end with 6 as their final. Robert and Sam battled it out the rest of the way with Sam's team coming out on top 21-16-6. It was very cold and windy but we all made it through, even Joyce and Brandi although shivering towards the end.

The hitters.
5 hits. Castilleja, Ramon
4 hits. Lopez, Testa, Gelinas, Miguel
3 hits. Spitaleri, Shaffer, Capozzi, Gonzalez,
            Rutan, Vining, Marino
2 hits. Dampier, Alf, Waddell, Henry, Vandenberg,
            Andrews.

See y'all Friday and hope it warms up.
The National League Draft will be held after the games on Tuesday.

 Friday, November 24th

A very close 3 team mixed game today all during a chili breeze. Managers were Wally, Witmer and Spitaleri. Spitaleri jumped out with 5 runs in the 2nd, and led 5-1-2. They got 4 more in the 3rd and kept scoring in every inning but the 5th. Wally and Witmer were always close enough to strike but just couldn't mount a good offensive inning.
Final was Spitaleri 17, Wally 13, Witmer 9.

Unfortunately, I can't do the hitters as so many that reached base were not recorded how.

I will say that newcomer Nestor had a HR and Witmer had a triple.

See y'all Tuesday.

 Tuesday, November 21st

There were enough players to field a very competitive American league game.  Tom Hamilton's bombers outlasted JD's bangers in a very well-played game 24-21.  Lots of hitting and good defense all around. The big blow came off the bat of Pete Gutenberger for a bases clearing 3RBI double, and sparkling defense from Lonnie, Keller, and Guzzo.   Also 3+ hits from Keller, Jacobson, Ramon, Hamilton, and Schultheis.  Wally, who struggled with the wind most of the day, closed out the win with 2 scoreless innings.  The other side had 3+ hits from JD, Guzman, Rad, and Witmer.  A big thanks to Joe D'Herin for umpiring as there were several close plays.  Another glorious day in paradise.

 Friday, November 17th

It was a very good and close 3 team mixed league game today. Managers were J.D., Steve Hill and Mark Tutrani.  Mark and his crew came out swinging and got 9 runs in the first 2 innings but didn't score again until the 6th when they put up 3. Meanwhile, J.D. and Steve were chipping away and the score was 9-9-9 after 5 innings and 12,12, 13 after 6 with J.D. in the lead. Then the open inning, which took a half hour with Steve's team scoring 8 runs mostly from the bottom of the order with 2 outs. Just amazing!!!  Mark and J.D. both put up goose eggs in the 7th for a final of 20-12-13.
The hitters.
4 hits. Don Keller who also was a defensive genius playing up the middle turning several double plays.
3 hits. Hill, Rad, Schaffer, Lopez, Harrell,
            Gutenberger w/hr, J.D. Lynch w/hr, Hicks,
Miller, Bob Schulthesis, B.J., Gonzalez, Shearer
2 hits. DeRidder, Muniz, Tutrani, Meyer, Rutan,
            Waddell, Kniery, Capozzi, Gibson.

We still need managers for the National League
See y'all Tuesday

Public Service Announcement: Protect Yourself from Holiday Fraud and Deceit

As the holiday season approaches, it is crucial to remain vigilant against the lurking threats of fraud and deceit. To ensure your safety, here are some essential tips to keep in mind. Don't let anyone steal your precious moments.

1) Beware of Suspicious Emails

A. Avoid clicking on emails supposedly from UPS, USPS, Amazon, or FedEx. Instead, visit their official websites or, even better, utilize their dedicated apps. Clicking on such emails can inadvertently load spyware onto your computer or phone, leaving you defenseless against it.

2) Power Down Your Phone

A. By simply powering down your phone for five minutes each day, you can effectively terminate any background processes. This practice ensures that spyware, like that found in apps such as TikTok, loses its ability to operate.
B. It is highly recommended to refrain from using TikTok altogether, as the app is notorious for its embedded spyware and unremovable trackers. Remember, your personal information is far too valuable to compromise.

3) Opt for Credit Card Payments

A. When making purchases, always use your credit card. Credit card companies offer protection for your transactions. If you encounter any issues with an order, you can promptly contact the credit company and halt the payment. Unfortunately, this level of security is not available with PayPal, Venmo, or Cash App. For more information, please check out this link: https://youtu.be/GrXxg3O8tzY?si=jXbe9yYibRP5DfYq

4) Writing Checks

A. Although writing checks may seem outdated, it is still a common practice. When doing so, ensure you use a Black uni-ball 207 pen. For further details, please refer to this link: https://youtu.be/zhR-koBU4zM?si=yvpeTOR95HenJjms

5) Beware of Artificial Intelligence

A. If someone claiming to be from your credit company, the IRS, or the Court contacts you, exercise caution. Refrain from providing any personal information and request a callback number to verify their accuracy. Too many Seniors fall victim to the phone scam every year.

America League 11/10/23

Today, the American League players engaged in a spirited battle on the day before Veterans Day, showcasing their exceptional skills and determination. With the invaluable support of their counterparts from the National League, the stage was set for an unforgettable clash. The games commenced with both teams displaying their prowess, as each managed to put runs on the board. However, it became evident that one team possessed an overwhelming arsenal of talent. Following an intense exchange, this dominant team emerged victorious, amassing an impressive total of 24 runs, while their opponents could only muster a mere 10 runs.
On this momentous occasion, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to the brave men and women who have fearlessly risked their lives, enabling us to revel in the joy of playing this beloved sport. Today, everyone was a winner, as we celebrate the unwavering dedication and sacrifice of our veterans, recognizing them as true champions in their own right.
As we commemorate Veterans Day, let us express our sincerest gratitude and offer our blessings to these remarkable individuals. May their courage and selflessness continue to inspire us all.

NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

There was a Board meeting after the games on Tuesday and the Board voted on several issues that will affect play for the remainder of this year and for the season next year. Those items are:

  • Game time change (Winter Hours) will begin on Tuesday, November 14th. Be at the ballpark no later than 9:00 AM. Games will begin at 9:30 AM or as soon as the teams are made. This will be the game time hours when the season begins in January.
  • The 2024 season will begin on Friday, January 5th next year. We hope to have six teams in the National League and two teams in the American League. We need a few more people to sign up to make that happen. Ask you friends and neighbors to come play ball with us.
  • Infield warmups will be limited to the first inning on all games, two team or three team. After the first inning, no infield warmups will be allowed. The pitcher can still have three warmup pitches if he wants them. The defensive team shall take the field as quick as possible after their third out is made. The offensive team should get their batters ready to hit as soon as possible.
  • The National League Draft will be held on Tuesday, December 5th. Managers are needed for each team. We have a lot of members that are capable of managing teams but for some reason they don't volunteer. It is a little bit of work for a short period on time. But you get to draft the players on your team that you want to play with. Please let the Commissioner or a board member know if you would like to be a Manager for the 2024 season. The Board will have a meeting in early December to select the managers for the 2024 season.
  • The Board voted to purchase new Hats and Shirts again this year. The hats will be Navy Blue with a Lime Green WHSS logo on the front of the hat. The shirts will be Navy Blue and Lime Green.
  • Nominations for the POLK COUNTY SENIOR SOFTBALL HALL OF FAME are in progress and will end on November 15th. We have three eligible players from Winter Haven. Chris Constantine, Loren Fabian and Nick Matta. If you would like to nominate someone, please see Don Witmer for the details and a nomination form.
  • The Angel Tree program that we have undertaken to support the children at Lake Elbert Elementary School has been put on hold for this year. The school is being rebuilt and the children have been transferred to other schools in the area. The Board is looking at other options for this year.
Current Board Members are shown on the Home Page of the Website. If you have questions or would like to discuss an issue with a Board Member, their phone numbers are listed there also. Remember this is a league of over 120 members and decisions are made to benefit the majority of the members.
