RECAP FOR THE WEEK OF JULY 20 - JULY 23

On Tuesday, we were not sure if we were going to get to play or not. The Monday nights games got rained out and it rained later that evening. When I got to  the ballpark, four of the fields had standing water. Luckily, Field C was just a little wet and would dry out by game time. We had 32 players signed up at game time so we had another 7 inning three team game. Bob Zelazny, Robert Spitaleri and Don Witmer managed the three teams. The score stayed close for most of the game so we did not get to flip flop in the seventh inning.  Final score was 12-11-8 with Zelazny coming from behind in the seventh inning to win the game.

On Thursday, the American League traveled to Solivita to play a double header.

The Winter Haven boys took both games in a decisive manner, 14-5 and 8-19.

The Winter Haven Gray Team was in top form. Dave Doerbaum led the charge going 8-8 with 4 home runs.

Don Fee and Lou Guzman both hit home runs.

The balance of the team made hit after hit.

We are looking to take them on again next month. Stay tuned for more games in the future.

  1. Johnny Ojeda 4-8: 4 BH
  2. Mike Vaccaro 5-7: 4 BH, 1 DB, BB

  5. Don Fee.  5-8: 4 BH, HR

Today was a repeat of Tuesday except the weather was different. It was hot, humid and no breeze. We decided to play six innings today.  We had 32 players sign up. Three teams were managed by Bob Zelazny, Freddie Gonzalez and Don Witmer. We had nine American League players playing today. Some of the National League regulars are on vacation and Steve Hill is back from his stay up north.  Zelazny's and Witmer's team started out hot while Gonzalez's team kept hitting the ball right to the defense. However, Gonzalez's team got back on track in the fifth inning scoring 6 runs to tie it up with Zelazny, 8-8. No flip flop today. In the Sixth inning Gonzalez's team continued their hitting streak and scored four more runs. However, it was not enough to overcome the six run lead that Witmer's team had. Final Score was 14-12-8

 GOOD NEWS FROM THE BOARD

The City of Winter Haven has agreed to allow us to have a summer luncheon this year. The luncheon will be on Tuesday, August 3rd after the games. It is planned for 11:00 AM or shortly thereafter. The menu will be a box lunch from Kentucky Fried Chicken and Mel's famous cookies. Drinks will be dispensed  by Board members with gloves. There will be a sign up sheet at the ballpark this Friday. Please sign up if you are planning to attend. This will be a family event so bring your significant others.

I want to remind everyone that the Covid-19 Virus (Delta Strain) is still with us and we should make every effort to maintain social distancing, wash our hands frequently and stay home if you are not feeling well. Most of us have taken the vaccine shots but you cannot let your guard down with this potent virus that is still out there. We do not want anything to happen to our softball family.

Thanks

Don Witmer, Commissioner

RECAP OF THE GAMES - JULY 13 THRU JULY 16

There was a FHC tournament in South Florida this past weekend so we were not expecting many people today. But, 40 players showed up. There was not a good enough mix of players for four teams so only 34 wanted to play. We played a three team game with 11 or twelve on each team. The American League guys are still looking for more players so we can have two-two team games. I will be glad when the snowbirds get back to Florida so we can make that happen.

It was a very good thing we got a 3 team game in on Tuesday as its raining cats and Brandys on Wednesday. 😆  Hope y'all know our mascot Brandi. The teams were managed by Constantine, Hite and Spitaleri. It was a well fought game with Hite coming out on top 15-14-14 and was not decided until the open inning when Bob's team held off the others to emerge victorious. There were 2 new guys signed up for the National League. Don Ouding and Herbie Munoz. Bill Testa had a very busy day at 2nd base grabbing no less than 4 line drives with none being hit right at him as well as some ground balls. Mile O'Callaghan made a fantastic play at 1B ranging to his right to snag a ground ball and a quick toss to second for the inning ending out. Hoping we can play again Friday.

On Friday, we had another three team game with 30 players signed up. We had ten players per team and loaned a sitting player to the defense so we could have 11 players on the field. Team 1 was managed by Robert  Spitaleri, Team 2 was managed by Don Witmer and Team 3 was managed by Chris Constantine. Team 1 started the game by scoring 5 runs in the first two innings. It looked like it was going to be a runaway for them but at the end of the third inning the score was 10-4-7. Team 1 continued their hitting streak in the fourth and sixth innings and at the end of six innings the score was 19-5-13. We are continuing our use of the flip flop rule for three team games. Team 2 led off the seventh inning and Team 3 defensed against them. Team two only  scored 3 runs in the seventh so they were eliminated from further play. Team 3 now came to bat in the seventh inning 6 runs down and Team 1 defensed against them. It has been rare that the team that was leading after six innings loses the game. On Tuesday's game, the second place team was down four runs and only scored three runs to end the game. Team 3 tried to change that today by putting on a hitting display and scored 7 runs to take a 1 run lead over Team 1. Now, in the bottom of the seventh inning, Team 1 is at bat and Team 3 is trying to keep them from scoring two runs to win the game. The first batter made an out. A couple of batters got on base and one run was scored with two outs. Now the game is tied.  A couple of more hits loaded up the bases and the last batter for Team 1, the new guy left handed Herbie Munoz took the count full before he hit a soft pop up down the left field line. Game over, Team 1 wins 21-20.

RECAP FOR THE WEEK OF JUNE 28TH TO JULY 2ND

On Tuesday, July 28th we had 26 players, mostly National League, because the American League went to Solivita to play. We decided to try something different today so we played six outfielders so no one would have to sit on the bench. It was different but the outcome was a close game that was decided in the bottom of the ninth inning by the home team winning by one run. There was a short game delay due to a rain shower but we got all of the innings completed. There were no injuries or serious arguments and we are thankful for that.

Write up by Robert Spitaleri.

On Tuesday,  the Winter Haven crew visited Solivita again in what was a back in forth battle.

Game one went to Solivita Red team after a 7-7 tie in the 5th. Final score was 8-12.

Game two was stopped after 4 innings due to a heavy rain, score Solivita 9 and Winter Haven 8.

The offense attack was pretty even up and down the line up.  The pitching duties went to BJ Kallister, Mark Tutrani, and new comer Dan Louis.

New comer Rawlinson Santaella who played middle infield and 3rd base fit right in. Just back from the injury list was Frankie Tranquellino who also played middle infield and 3rd. Both players did flash some leather in the game.

We hope to have them over our place next month.

  1. Radley Pcholinski 3/5
  2. Dave Doerbaum 4/5, 2HRs
  3. Lou Guzman 3/5, 1 Hr

Friday's games at Winter Haven were rained out, but six of our American League players joined Charlie Giordano and our friends from Sebring to play another game in Solivita. The game was called due to rain in the sixth inning with Solivita ahead 14-12.

We have been getting our share of rain for the last two weeks and WHSS has been rained out twice. It is raining in Winter Haven now as I post the writeups from the  past week. Hope to get to play tomorrow.
