Our young guys from Winter Haven Senior Softball, WHAS,  hosted the team out of Kissimmee on Field “D”. The All-Stars won both games 9-11 and 8-7. Giving new team manger Lou Guzman another 2 wins to his record.

BJ pitched game one and JD pitched game two. The team was led by Mike Vaccaro who batted .750 for the day. Mike Vaccaro, Manny Rios, BJ, and Tony Quinones all hit triples to keep the pressure on Team Kissimmee. Mike Vaccaro, Manny Rios, Dana Ferrande hit doubles while, Lou Guzman hit two doubles to add to the offensive  attack.

John Davis aka JD had the Devil’s number average of .666 to keep the game tight. Both games went back and forth but great defense was the equalizer. Great plays by Jose Rodriguez and Joey Santos help seal both wins.

All-Stars will play Team Solivita on Friday on Field “D” hoping to add to their wins for a winning team record.

Tuesday, September 8th

I didn't pick up the score sheets but have to write about this game I umped this morning. First of all, the weather was great compared to Friday's game that we could only go 5 innings because of the heat. Went the full 7 today with 3 teams. The game was really fun with many jokes and laughs. Y'all snowbirds don't get to enjoy these summer games with all the kidding and BS.

Now the game. Team 1 scored in every inning but the 2nd, only batted 6 times because of the flip flop. They ended up with 21 runs. Team 2 ended with 12 and team 3 ended with 10.

We all witnessed two amazing plays today. The first one was a true senior softball triple play. Bases loaded, no one out and a sharp ground ball to Ralph Boswell and he quickly steps on 3rd, FIRES to Sam Lopez at home for 2 who FIRES to first a step ahead ahead of the runner to complete the triple play. WOW!!!!

The other was a true major League catch made in the outfield by Mike Vacarro (hope I spelled it right)  A power hitter was up (Dana Ferrande) so the outfielders were nearly on the warning track. The ball was hit very high to short left center, left center fielder Mike took off in a sprint from left center after it and we all thought -no way- he got close and went into a hook slide, reached out his glove and the ball stuck. I've been in this league about 7 years and that is the only time I've witnessed a round of applause coming from the dugout. What league commraderie!!!  Way to go WHSS.

Fans in the stands. Joyce and Brandi. We miss you girls.

Friday, Sept 4th

A good and very hot game in the National League today while the American League was playing a doubleheader with the Solivita boys on Field C. Maybe Don will tell how the Solivita games came out. I umpired today which is about my softball limit until I can get my right shoulder fixed.

The Double Header with Solivita was a Split. Winter Haven won the First Game 20-19 on a walk-off home run by Mike Vacarro and Solivita won the second game on a two out bases loaded triple by Joey 16-15.

It started out as a game of 5's as in the first 2 innings Kings team scored 4 and 5 runs and Vandenbergs team scored 5 and 5 runs. Then the heat took over which may have had a heat index of 105+ (note the 5) on the infield. That is also when the managers decided to only play 5 innings. (note the 5) 0's were put up in the 3rd and the 4th got another 5 for Vandy and a 3 for King. Vandy got one more in the top of the open inning and King put up a goose egg for a final of 15-13.

Before I list the hitters everyone pls put Don Lamay in you prayers up in Michigan who has contracted the virus and Melanie Hite who is fighting a cancer battle. Damn virus and cancer!!!!

The hitters.
3 hits.        Vining, Boswell, Tutranni, Bill T, Constantine,
                       Granger
2 hits.          Herb O, Coffman, Vandenberg, Wells,
                        Laffoon, Capozzi, Dampier,
Also note that Lee Baker had a solid base hit up the middle.
