It’s a Hit! Angel Tree!

The men (and ladies) of Winter Haven Senior Softball stepped up to the plate and smacked it out of the park.  We provided gifts for 40 kids, who might have had nothing under their trees on Christmas morning. The kids are all students at Lake Elbert Elementary School in Winter Haven. Guys you need to give yourselves a pat on the back.  Great Job!!  While you at it please give Elmer Black a round of applause for coming up with the idea and bringing it all together.  As Elmer told me, “It’s about the kids.”  He is absolutely right.

Hey guys, how about signing up for Santa Calling?  Which happens next Thursday evening at the Winter Haven City Hall.  We need a least 10 men and ladies to help out.  It's a fun night.

Field D for National league was a barn burner ending up with Fabe's Flyers on top of Strait's Sluggers 21-18 but it wasn't easy. Since we're coming close to the draft and league teams I will start using names I selected last year. Most managers have volunteered and/or have been selected but we could use more volunteer managers. Fabian's Flyers jumped out on top 4-1 after 2 innings and 11-4 after 5 innings and 13-7 after 6. But Strait'Sluggers slugged their way to 8 runs and tie it up 15-15 after 7 innings. Neither team scored in the 8th but Fabian had the top of the order coming up in the top of the 9th and exploded for 6 runs. Strait had the middle of the order coming up and could only muster 3 runs before a grounder back to winning pitcher Jerry Witter for the final out.

I would like to welcome newcomer Ken Gilpen who got a batting average his first game and was 3-5. Welcome Ken.

Ray Roy had a fantastic day at second base and Rudy LaPointe had 2 put outs at the plate thanks to very good relay throws from Sam Lopez and Fred Dampier or it could have been a whole different ball game.

Strait's hitters.     Capozzi 2-4. Marino 5-5. Leveque5-5. McLellan 3-5. Gilpin 3-5. Strait 3-5

Fabe's hitters.      Hite 2-5. Dampier 4-4. R. Roy 4-5. Herb O. 2-5. Schapeler 3-5. Lopez 4-5. Thompson 3-5. Witter 2-5. Fabian 2-5. LaPointe 2-5. Minder 3-4. McPartlan 2-4. Merritt 1-3.

See y'all Tuesday.

Strait's Sluggers vs Black's Bashers.
It was a seesaw game. Strait was up 6-2 after 2 and 6-5 after 3 and 11-10 after 4. Then Black went up 16-15 but Strait took the lead again at 18-16 going to the bottom of the 9th and  Bill Rutan drove in the tying and winning runs with a drive to the left field wall scoring Capozzi and Herb O. Winning pitcher was Larry Powell.

For the victors Fred Gonzalez had back to back 3 run homers and Bill Rutan drove in and scored many runs including the game winner.

Great game. See YA'LL Friday.

Happy Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving has its origins rooted in religious and secular practices. The Pilgrims celebrated Thanksgiving as a way to give thanks to God for His provision; a bountiful harvest and providing plenty of game to hunt, as well as safety. The first Thanksgiving took place in 1621, in Plymouth, MA; between Christian colonists and the Wampanoag tribe. Sadly, there was no football games that day. Ninety or so native Americans showed up at the settlements gate in a surprise visit. The pilgrims invited them to a feast and the two parties both contributed provisions for meals. The celebration lasted for days.
The Tuesday before Thanksgiving the WHSS, AL teams got together for a peaceful softball game. There was a bountiful harvest of hits and runs.
Visitors: Pilgrims: Rivera, Guzzo, Rad, Matta, Burns, Scarbrough, DeRidder, Book, Essenmacher, Busch And Constantine.
Home Team, Indians: Reagen, Shirer, Jacobson, Toro, JD, Jacobs, Denny, Thirey, Crowell, Coffman and Roger.
Much like the first Thanksgiving, the two teams spent the early part of the game feeling each other out. After the first inning of play the score was 1-2 in favor of the Native Americans. In the 2nd inning the Pilgrims took out the drum sticks and started beating on the ball. Hits from DeRidder, Book, Essenmacher, Busch, Constantine and Rivera pushed 5 runs across the plate with no outs recorded in the inning. After 2 innings the score was Pilgrims: 6- Indians: 3.
Both teams nibbled on cranberries, squash and cornbread over the next few innings, scoring a run here and there. In the 5th inning a platter of turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes was served up. The Pilgrims scored 5 runs. Constantine got the Pilgrims harvest started with a single. Rivera then singled and set runners on 1st and 3rd. Guzzo singled a run in. Rad loaded the bases with a single and Matta rocked the Mayflower with a triple to right field that cleared the bases. Burns then smacked a towering shot to right field, scoring Matta easily, giving us our 5.
The Indians answered back in the bottom of the 5th with three runs. Jacobson walked, JD, Denny, Thirey and Crowell all got hits to help the tribe. After 5 innings, the score was Pilgrims: 13-Indians: 8.
The Pilgrims continued to gorge themselves on turkey, gravy and ham in the 6th inning, scoring 4 more runs. DeRidder, Book, Busch, Constantine and Rivera helped themselves and the team, at the plate. At the end of 6 innings, it was Pilgrims: 17- Indians: 8.
The Pilgrims were not being very good guests as the score was lopsided. The Indians pushed back a little in the 7th outscoring the Pilgrims, 3-2, in the 7th.  That made the score Pilgrims: 19- Indians: 11. In the 8th inning things changed for the Indians, they filled their cornucopia with runs. They had a plethora of hits; Routur, Reagen, Shirer, Jacobson, Toro, JD, Jacobs and Denny all reached base before an out was recorded. Crowell and Coffman added two more hits before the side was retired.  The Indians roasted 7 runs, their bats were on fire, they tightened up the score, Pilgrims 19- Indians 18, going into the 9th.
The Pilgrims wanted to be good guests, but they also wanted to win the game. We added 4 runs in the 9th.  Rad and Matta singled, then with two outs Scarbrough knocked them in, with a single. DeRidder added a double to knock in Scarbrough and Book knocked in DeRidder with a single. The Indians had eaten so much turkey in the 8th inning, they were now ready for a nap. They couldn’t even manage a pumpkin pie desert in the 9th. They were retired in order and the final score was Pilgrims: 23-Indians: 18. Thanks to Joe D'Herin for umpiring the game. Everyone enjoyed playing the game and wished each other a Happy Thanksgiving after the game.
I wish everyone a cornucopia of blessings. The cornucopia is also known as a horn of plenty, may God fill your horn with plenty of love, peace, joy, health and prosperity.  I am thankful to God for all He has given.
Those who knocked the stuffing out of the ball for the Visitors:
Rivera: 3/5 with a double.
Guzzo: 3/5 with a double and a HR.
Rad: 3/5.
Matta: 4/5, with a double and a triple.
DeRidder: 5/5, with a double and a triple.
Book: 4/5, with a double.
Constantine: 4/4, with a triple.
Those who rocked, Plymouth Rock, for the Home Team:
Reagen: 3/6.
Toro: 4/5, with a HR and a triple.
JD: 5/5, with a double.
Jacobs: 3/4.
Denny: 4/5.

Friday, November 17th
Well the Solivita sluggin' smashers visited Winter Haven for a double header today against the American League and definately lived up to the name I just gave them. They swept the double header and are now on a 4 game winning streak against our AMERICAN League. The first game was a flip flop won by Solivita 16-6 and the 2nd was a final of 15-7. Solivita just peppered the ball all day and made very few errors. Winter Haven would get runners on but just had trouble getting the ball out of the infield with runners in scoring position.

As always it was a very fun time by all and the bond between the 2 league  keeps growing stronger. Now there is talk of combining a travel team made up of both teams. "Softball COMRADERIE is great".

The only game won by Winter Haven today was by me umping the bases and their 1st baseman Bo was how many warm up balls he could toss into 3rd base dugout. He got one in and I won that 9-1. Good luck next time Bo.

It was another fantastic time.

Field E Slugfest

Today's game was a real nail biter in the end. That was not always the case as The Bulls managed by Juan Toro jumped to an early substantial lead and held it until the seventh inning when the Zebras scratched away at the lead and managed to even up the game at 19 apiece. The Bulls were strong at the plate and on defense with Reagan, Essenmark, Toro, Busch, Coffman, Knox,Crowell, Ridley, Rutan, Shappler, and Bess playing solid ball.

The Zebras had Rivera, Skidmore, Pete, King, Zelazny, Denny, Thiry, Levesque, Boito, Sherrer, Hill, and Wells, who to their credit fought hard all game and were down by as many as nine at one time but never quit. As previously stated they manged to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh at 19 runs after scoring seven runs in that inning. The eighth inning saw the Bulls retake the lead with two runs. Unfortunately for them the bats for the Zebras did not cool down between innings and they scored four runs to finally take the lead.

I guess it was too much to ask that the Bulls would give up, because they came out strong in the ninth by scoring two runs by the lead off hitters. With Bess at first, the next three batters (top of the line up) all flied out. The Zebras came up with the bottom of the line up due to hit.  With the scored tied and two out and runners on 1st and 2nd base, Josh Wells came to the plate and smashed a liner scoring John Bioto from second for the victory. So to sum up, Josh was the winning picture and drove in the winning run. Final Score  Bulls 23, Zebras 24.

Overwhelmed, just overwhelmed by the generosity , but not surprised by your response guys, to help put a smile on a young boy or girl's face come Christmas morning. As good as it is, we still have a little bit of unfinished business to attend to. We still have 6 gifts left to purchase from the 40 we started with. Let's wrap this up on Friday, and get the gifts back to me by the end of November, so that I can deliver them to Lake Elbert Elem. School as soon as possible, and the parents of these less fortunate Kids can pick them up as the school closes on Dec. 15th. for the Holidays.
Thanks again Guys

Friday, November 10th
This game started out slow with Zelazny's team ahead 5-2 after 4 innings. Z's boys outscored Nick's guys 13 to 4 the final 5 innings to win 18-6. This game had some nice displays of hitting.  Les Jacobson hit for the cycle by outrunning the relays on a long blast over the right fielders head for the homerun he needed to complete the cycle. It should be noted that as Les rounded third he desparately could have used some sort of CYCLE to complete his journey.  Nice game Les.  There were some other excellent hitting efforts including Slash Matta going 4-4, Bob Reagen with an inside the park homerun, Greg Denny was 4-4, and Joe D'Herin was 5-5. Thanks to the National League guys who helped fill the rosters in this game.

Subject: WHSS Angel Tree For Lake Elbert Elementary School
Gentlemen I have two things I want you to think about.
1) Think about how fortunate you are to be able to live in Florida and play ball at your age.
2) Think about some 40 unfortunate kids, boys and girls, ages from 4 to 12, who will not be getting
any Christmas gifts. Sad isn't it. We can help put a smile on these Kids by buying them a gift. $20.00 plus or minus. A list will be posted at check in this Friday Nov. 10th. and every ball day until we meet our goal.
If you have a problem buying a gift, give me your money and I will see that it is bought, wrapped and delivered before Dec.
This is a WHSS approved project by your Board Of Directors Any questions please see me, Elmer Black
Come on Guys lets make these young people happy. Thanks.

A Game That Was Out Of This World!

Hyperbole Definition: A purposeful exaggeration or overstatement. In Greek, it literally means to overshoot.

I often write using hyperboles to tell a story, in this case to tell the story of a softball game. My style is unique, but not original, many authors use this technique when expressing their thoughts and feelings while penning their publications. As an example, I give you Harper Lee who wrote To Kill A Mockingbird. Here she describes the town of Maycomb, AL and the era. People moved slowly then. They ambled across the square, shuffled in and out of the stores around it, took their time about everything. A day was twenty-four hours long but seemed longer.” She might have used a similar line to describe our American League game, played on 11/3. The game was only nine innings, but seemed longer because of the battle and scoring that took place. Thankfully, for the Visitors, the game was 9 innings long and not 8 innings.

Visiting Team: Hicks, Wiltshire, Shirer, Doerbaum, Held, Pep, Matta, Reagen, JD, D’Herin.

Home Team: Guzzo, Hern, Quinones, Jacobson, Jacobs, Book, Busch, Zelazny, Crowell and Toro.

It is difficult to overemphasize the description of this game by using hyperboles, because it was such a strange game. But, I’ll give it a shot; the game was fly me to Oz, on a tornado, strange.

Through the first 5 innings both teams were like two equally fast thoroughbreds, running a race, neck and neck. The score was Visitors: 10-Home: 11 after half the game was played. The teams and the score were closer than peanut butter and jelly on a sandwich.

During the next three innings the Home team started to pull away from their opponent. They scored 8 runs and held the visitors to a big fat zero. The eighth inning was their slamfest. The Home team scored five runs that inning; off of hits by Book, Busch, Zelazny, Guzzo and Hern. The big blast came off of the bat of Hern, who had an inside the park HR. After 8 innings the score was Visitors: 10- Home: 19. Note that Jacobs and Quinones flexed their muscles, earlier in the game, to contribute to that score by hitting inside the park HRs.

The Visitors came up in the 9th inning having to overcome a lead that was wider than the Grand Canyon. Not to mention the fact that our bats had been in the deep freeze so long, we had icicles growing on them. The team took a never say die attitude to the plate. Hicks, Wiltshire, Shirer, Doerbaum, Held, Pep and Matta all reached base before the first out was recorded. Doerbaum had the big blast, unusual for him, it was an inside the park HR. As opposed to the over the fence type shot that we have grown accustomed to seeing him hit. Like the one he sent over the left field fence, in the 3rd inning. Those first seven batters knocked in 5 runs. A little quick math shows that we were still down 4 runs. The score was now Visitors: 15- Home: 19.

With 2 runners on base, JD added a hit and knocked in a run. Now we were down 3 runs, with the score at 16-19 and we had runners on the corners, with only one out. This is the stuff memories are made of, memories so thick you have to brush them away from your face, if I can borrow a hyperbole from the film, “Field Of Dreams”.  “Ray. People will come, Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course, we won't mind if you look around", you'll say, "It's only $20 per person". They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit in shirtsleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces.”

With the score 16-19, favoring the Home team, the Visitors had to have a few more hits, and a little more magic water, if they wanted to take the Home team to the wood shed. The Visitors recorded their 2nd out of the inning with runners on 1st and 3rd. Then Hicks, Wiltshire, Shirer and Doerbaum all reached base. The Wiltshire at bat had knocked in the tying run. The score was even, 19-19. Shirer’s hit had knocked in the go ahead run, 20-19. Doerbaum’s single and sent up runners at 1st and 3rd. Held was intentionally walked to load the bases, in the hopes that Pepin could be retired without any more damage being done. Big mistake, Pep lined a triple to right field. That all but sunk the home teams battleship.  Matta lined out to right center to end the inning. The horse was already out of the barn though. The score was now 23-19. The Visitors swung the wrecking ball, placing 14 men on base and scoring 13 runs in the inning.

Down but not out, the Home team tried to rally and reclaim the game, in the bottom of the 9th. Quinones, Jacobson, Book and Busch all reached base, the first two guys crossed the plate.  Only one out was recorded in the scorebook during that action. The score was now 23-21, the visitors still in front. Runners were on 1st and 3rd, when Zelazny came to bat and inadvertently took us to the twilight zone. Bob hit a ground ball to 2nd base, the ball was momentarily bobbled. The throw went to 2nd base, to try and cut down the streaking runner. The ball was then bobbled at 2nd, but the runner was called out and for good reason. We have a long-standing rule at WHSS that you cannot make contact with the fielder at 2nd base. The runner must slide or peel off the bag. Because of interference, the runner was called out at 2nd, making it the 2nd out of the inning. Meanwhile the runner at 3rd scored on the play, making the score 23-22, in favor of the visitors. Randy Crowell came up with two outs and singled to right to push the tying run to 3rd.

The drama was as thick as a Sherlock Holmes movie. The Visiting team was whistling past the graveyard while trying to play defense. With runners on the corners and two outs, the game was on the line. At this point it would not have surprised me if the batter would have pinballed a hit off the pitcher, bounced it off the first baseman and the 2nd baseman would have kicked it into right field. That is how bizarre the game played out, up to this point. The ending was less spectacular. Donny Held was pitching in relief and got the next batter to pop up and end the game. Final Score 23-22, the Visitors win a wild one. You might say we jumped the shark.

Big Sticks For The Visitors:

Hicks: 5/6.

Wiltshire: 4/6.

Doerbaum: 3/6, two HRs.

Held: 4/5 and a walk.

Pep: 4/6. Game winning triple.

Big Sticks For The Home Team.

Hern: 5/6 with a double and a HR.

Quinones: 4/6 with a triple and a HR.
