Today's game, Fri. Jan 2 was the first game of the New Year and the final contest before the start of the National League season. The home team on field C was managed by Welton and inc: Bess, Guspyt, Kline, Miller, Remington, Chrest, Bloom, McLellan, Witter, Ducham, Mohan,and Ayala. The visitors were managed by Simon and inc: Marino, Grabb, Zakrowski, D.Hill, Powell, Augenstein,Moots, Spitaleri, Fulton, Gibson and S. Holder. The first inning saw the home team jump on top by a 5-3 lead powered by doubles by Guspyt and McLellan. Both teams failed to score in the second frame. Simon's visitors scored once in the third thanks to a Grabb double. The visitors did not score in the fourth. Welton's home team scored two runs on a Chrest two bagger to take a 7-4 lead after 4 innings of play. In the fifth inning the home team added to their lead with a run and widen their advantage to 8-4. The visitors bats then jumped to life and scored five runs on a seven hit barrage featuring a Grabb double to take a 9-8 slim lead. With both teams evenly matched and competitive the visitors scored twice in the top of the seventh to take a 3 run advantage. However, this was a contest of two teams that refused to quit. In the bottom of the seventh the home team scored 4 times on 6 hits and regained the lead 12-11. In the eighth inning the visitors retook the lead by scoring twice on 5 hits. In the bottom of the eighth the home boys went 3 and out and seemed to lose their mojo. After eight innings of play the game was close and the visitors held a slim one run advantage. In the final frame the visitors scored one run on another Grabb double and held a 2 run lead and needed to shut the home team down to preserve a narrow win. The home team had two batters reach base but failed to score. The visitors won a close, exciting contest 14-12. Powell was the WP . Leading batters for the visitors were Simon 4-5, Marino 3-5, Grabb 5-5 2B, Spitaleri 3-4, Augenstein 3-4.
