Under a sunny sky with blustery winds, the Yankees hosted the Old Timers on Field C. The Yankees hit with a rash of injuries, needed 4 pool players to complete the lineup.
The Yankees scored 5 in the bottom of the 1st, to take a 5-1 lead. But the Old Timers answered in the top of the third with 5 runs, with all scoring by the 7-12 batters. The Yankees could only score 3 runs over the next 5 innings, while the Old Timers scored only 5 runs. Then the scoring began. The OT’s scored 4 in the top of the seventh, with the Yankees, using the catch-up rule, scored 7 to tie the game. The OT’s scored 5 in the top of the 8th, with the Yankees answering with 4 in the bottom of the 8th, to trail by one.
The top of the 9th saw the OT’s scoring 3 to lead by 4. The first 3 batters scored for the Yankees in the ninth on timely hitting by pool players Jim Hus(triple) and Roger Welch. With the go ahead run at the plate, a dying line drive by Henry Rivero was caught by Fred Gonzales and quickly thrown to first base for a game ending double play. Final score 23-22 in favor of the Old Timers.
Thank you to pool players Bob Skidmore, Jim Hus, Roger Welch and Jim Fears for helping out today. Good defense was provided by Tom Capozzi and the Old Timers outfield. The Yankees were without a pitcher but found one in Ron Fleming. Ron was up to the challenge and pitched a great game in the blustery wind.
Top Hitters for the Old Timers were Steve Hicks (6-6) and Mark Tutrani(5-5, 3B).
Top Hitters for the Yankees were: Bill King, who continued his hitting streak and went 4-5; Bobby Castellija(4-5), Don Keller (4-5, 2b and HR) and Bob Skidmore (4-5).
Great game fellows!!!
