The Dukes and Mets met for the first time this year as the first scheduled game was rained out with the Dukes combining a two out first inning rally for five runs when Reed, Witten and Gibbons delivered three hits in a row for five runs. That combined with an inability for the Mets to score in the eight or in the flip flop ninth inning resulted in Final score 28-l8 in favor of the league-leading Dukes. Reed and Witten went four for four and were the only two that scored four runs for the Dukes.
Congratulations to Tom Witten who hit a ball over the fence with a man on in the 7th. This was the first time this writer can recall personally seeing such a feat in a National League competition.
The only hitter for the Mets scoring four runs was Lopiccolo although 11 of the l3 players scored at least one run. Toro and DeJong scored three each. Thanks to Burns, Hite, and Meyer for filling in for ill players, and a special thank you to injured George Knox for umpiring the entire game at home plate for both teams.
