The game today on Field E between the Cobras and the Braves were two teams that matched up well. Cobras managed by Bob Vandenberg batted as follows: Spitaleri, Vandenberg, Jacobs, Peski, Gelinas, Ridley, Spigel, Hawbaker, Learn, Bloom, Mutch and L. Baker. Braves manager Strait listed his team in this order: Burtner, LeTourneau, Reed, Levesque, Knox, Remington, LoPiccolo, LaMay, Gallagher, Strait, Poke, Purcell, Klatt.
Spitaleri and Vandenberg started the game with singles, Jacobs double both runners in, then Peski singles in Jacobs from second. After two outs singles from Spigel and Hawbaker knock in the 5th run of the inning. Braves started the bottom of the 1st with singles from Burtner and Reed and Levesque blasted a deep line drive to center for a home run. Knox tripled and LoPiccolo’s liner brought him in for the fourth run of the inning. Cobras 5 Braves 4.
Learn led off the second for the Cobras with a walk, a single from Bloom, triple off the bat of Mutch posted two runs for the inning. Brave’s Gallagher, Strait, and Poke singled in the bottom half of the inning and Purcell smacked a triple to clear the bases. Burtner, LeTourneau, and Reed had base hits with Reed driving in the 5th run of the inning. Braves up 9 to 7.
In the third and fourth innings the Cobras took control of the game by adding 5 runs in each inning while holding the Braves to just one run. After 4 innings Cobras up 17 to 10. In the 5th LoPiccolo threw bowling balls to the Cobras limiting them to one run over the last 5 innings. Braves added 5 runs in the 5th to make the score Cobras 18 Braves 15. The Braves Gallagher made a great running, rolling catch in right center to hold only one run to score and helped turn the game around.
The 6th, 7th, and 8th had the Braves posting 6 runs and the final score was Cobras 18 Braves 21.
Hitting star of the game was Levesque with 2 home runs. LoPiccolo the winning pitcher by posting 4 scoreless innings at the end of the game with help from some good fielding plays.
Cobras hitters: Spitaleri 4 for 5, Jacobs 3 for 5 2B, Ridley 2 for 4, Spigel 4 for 4 w/2 two base hits, Hawbaker 3 for 4, Bloom 3 for 4, Mutch 3 for 4 with 3B and 2B; and L Baker 2 for 4.
Braves Hitters: Burtner 5 for 5, LeTourneau 4 for 5, Reed 3 for 4, Levesque 2 for 3 w/ 2HRs and a SF, Knox 4 for 4 3B, LoPiccolo 3 for 4, LaMay 2 for 4, Gallagher 4 for 4 and that great catch. Poke 2 for 4 and Purcell 4 for 4 w/3B.
Some of the players missing from the game today were Tom Capozzi and Dick Newton, Bill McLellen and Jerry Witter, and many others due to health problems. Keep them all in your prayers that they come back soon with smiles on their faces.
