Friday February 28, 2020   Field 2 Poinciana

Game day on field 2 at Poinciana had the visiting Derailers playing the home team Braves.  Manager DeRidder posted this batting order: Pinnick, Rutan, DeRidder, Murphy, McCullough, Witmer, McNally, King, Bowley and Taylor.  Manager Strait had his team lined up in this order:  Burtner, LeTourneau, Reed, Lavesque, Knox, Don Folkerson, Strait, Gallagher, LaMay and Witter.  Each team had 10 players today because of  shortage of player today.  Both teams played with out a MidFielder that left a lot of gaps in the infield.

Pinick led off the first with a walk, then singles off the bats of Rutan, Murphy, McCullough and Witmer produced 3 runs for the Derailers.  Braves LeTourneau started the last half of the inning with a base rap, Reed and Levesque doubled, Knox drove a triple to the fence driving in three runs.  Folkerson and Strait had singles to post 5 runs for the Braves.  Second inning had Bowley with a base hit up the middle, Pinnick followed with another single and Manager DeRidder hit a home run, his first of three over the fence.  Murphy, McCullough and Witmer followed with base hit and tally 5 runs for the inning.  Braves posted a zero in the bottom of the frame.

In the third the Derailers rested, while the Brave pushed across 2 runs.  After three the score was Visitors 8 Home 7.  After a short rest Derailers racked up another 5 runs holding the Braves to 3. The 5th inning had the infields opening up and the bats getting warm again.  Derailers posting another 5 and the Brave putting up 4 on the scoreboard.  After five score was 18 – 14 Derailers.

Sixth inning has the Braves close the gap by out scoring the Derailers 4 to 1.  Seventh had the Braves again winning the inning scoring 5 while holding the visitors to four runs.  Score now tied 23 all.

Derailers took charge of the game now putting another 5 runs in the 8th while holding the Braves scoreless in the bottom of the inning.  Manager DeRidders team then put the game away batting 11 players in the top of the ninth inning and posting 8 more runs.  Final score Derailers 36 Braves 23.

One good thing about only having 10 players on each is that everyone on both teams got to bat 6 times in the game and some got 7 at bats.  Good game thru 7 innings and a great 8th and 9th for the Derailers.

Derailers Hitters: Rutan 4 for 7, DeRidder 5 for 6 w/3HR and IP, Murphy 6 for 7 w/2 3B, McCullough 5 for 7 w/2DBL, Witmer 7 for 7, McNally 5 for 6, King and Bowler both 3 for 6.

Braves Hitters:  LeTourneau 6 for 7 w/2 DBL, Leverque 3 for 6, KNOX 6 for 6 and hit for the cycle, Folkerson 3 for 6 w/3B, Strait 3 for 6, Witter 3 for 6, the score sheet showed LaMay with a HR as the old guy’s hit went to the fence in left field but his pinch runner had to stop at first.

Fun game guys.  Need more players to show up these fields are a further away but it is still better than not playing.

Steve Hill's Duke's squared off against Fabian's Flyers this morning and got off to a great start, scoring 5 runs in each of the first 2 innings bot only managed 5 more for the rest of the game. The Flyers all had hitting shoes on again posting nickels in 4 of 7 innings for a final of 27-15.
I would like to note here that Duke's was without his whole middle infield and 2 quality outfielders due to a prior commitment and travel distance from Lakeland. Hang tough Steve thru this tough month of playing shorthanded. We all admire you, your team and the pool players you use.

February 21st Friday
Flyers vs Cobras:
It has been said that “any day you can play softball is a good day”, but weather-wise today was a crappy day. First, we were moved from field B to field A (the short fence field). The wind was blowing out fiercely, there was bound to be a lot of balls hit over the fence, especially with each team getting 2 American league players to fill out each roster.
The flyers started the game with 3 hits over the fence, Essenmacher, Brock and Vanderhyde, and scored 3 runs. The cobras scored 4 runs with 2 regular doubles and 1 HR over the fence by Gonzalas. The flyers scored 5 in the top of the second with 2 HR’s going over the fence, Brock & Kallister, but the cobras could only muster up 1 run, that going over the fence by DeBrock. Nobody scored in the third., score: flyers 8 cobras 5. In the 4th the flyers got 2 and the cobras got 4 with another one over the fence. After 4 innings, Flyers 10 ,Cobras 9. It was all Cobras after that. Flyers only scored 1 run in the last 5 innings while the cobras scored 17 runs with 5 more over the fence HR’s. Final score: Cobras 26  Flyers 11.
Winning pitcher Hal Ridley
Top hitters for the cobras:

Our first adventure over to Poincianna to play WHSS. And it went very well with much thanks to Donnie, Bob Hite and Lee Baker who were all there before Sun up grooming fields and much more.

Fabian's Flyers took on DeRidders DeRailers on field 3 and it was close thru 4 innings with Fabian leading 15-10. Unfortunately, the DeRailers did not score another run as they put up 5 goose eggs after that. That was helped by at least 4 double plays by the Flyers. Newcomer Jerry DeJongh was involved in all of them playing shortstop along with Gisele Seguin at 2nd base and Joann Westerman at 1st base.

Obviously the Flyers had their hitting shoes on and the DeRailers left theirs in their vehicles. Flyers had 39 hits in 8 innings compared to 18 for the DeRailers in 9 innings.

Final was Fabian 29. DeRidder 10.

Looking forward to Friday.

All please be there by 8:30 so Don can make the adjustments an get the game started on time.

Winning pitcher was B.J. Kallister
