How To Be A Superhero.
The WHSS, AL game, between JD’s KFC and Matta’s A’s, on 1/30, will take a DC Comics spin. The DC superheroes include Superman,
Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, the Flash and a few other champions of justice. This gives me a chance to emulate Superman co-creators; Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, along with Batman co-creators; Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Siegel/Schuster created Superman,
in 1933, while living in Cleveland, as High School students. Kane and Finger came together in NYC to work on Batman, in 1939.
Visitors; Team Batman: Hicks, Pep, Shirer, Matta, Crowell, Zelazny, Aufiero, Gazarek,
Vanderhyde and Deemie.
Home; Team Superman: Rad, Burns, Quinones, Davis, Abreu, Denny, Butler,
Essenmacher, Reagen, Ogden, Coffman and Wells.
Team Batman came out in the first inning wearing Batman pajamas. We quickly put up a zero. Team Superman came out with
their tights on, problem was they were a little too tight. They scored a single run in the first inning and left the bases loaded, when the last batter that inning grounded out to end the threat.
In the 2nd inning the Caped Crusaders came out of the bat cave dugout in the bat mobile. We raced around the
bases, scoring 3 runs. Crowell, Gazarek, Vanderhyde, Deemie and Hicks answered the bat signal.
Team Superman soared, filling their capes with wind. They answered back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd.
Butler, Essenmacher, Reagen and Ogden went in the phone booth as Clark Kent and came out wearing a big red S across their chest. They all reached base before Lois Lane could even record an out in the books. It was then that Bat Pitcher, George Vanderhyde,
reached into his utility belt and pitched a DP ball, that helped to still the Men of Steel. Wells and Rad followed up with hypersonic hits. However, the next batter never got off the planet Krypton, the inning self-destructed when he flew out. At the end of
2 innings the score was Team Batman: 3-Team Superman: 4.
In the next 7 innings, Vanderhyde pitched like a superhero and the Gotham defense played like they were defending the
field with impenetrable bat armor. Vanderhyde threw the kryptonite ball, rendering the Superman team helpless. George pitched 7 consecutive scoreless innings. The outfield had their bat radar working. Aufiero made the front page of both the Daily Planet and
the Gotham Gazette, for making two great catches in left field. Winged freaks, Pep and Hicks, spread their bat wings and tracked down two fly balls that were sure hits. Shier, Matta, Crowell and Deemie were the dynamic infield, turning 3 double plays in the
game. While Bob Zelazny, at 2nd base, was the crime fighter extraordinaire, catching two sizzling line drives. Team Superman had a great defensive play when Tony Quinones used his arm of steel to cut down a runner at the plate.
Team Batman did the job on offense too, you figure batman would know his way around bats. I am not talking about the winged
vermin type of bats, but the Dudley, Adidas and Mikken type of bats. The Dark Knight offensive highlights included an inside the park HR and double by Matta. A triple by Crowell, a double by Gazarek and a double by Vanderhyde. Some of the runners needed a
turbo boost to make it around the bases. With Team Batman holding a commanding lead, Commissioner Gordon called for a flip flop in the 9th inning. The Final score was Team Batman: 18 - Team Superman: 4. Thanks To Brian Busch for umpiring.
For a few innings we can all be superheroes on the field of play. More importantly we can be superheroes off the field,
where it really counts! We can achieve great things when we do good works; feeding the hungry, donating clothes and helping others. Keep in mind this quote from The Dark Knight Rises:
“A hero can be anyone, even a man doing something as simple and reassuring as putting
a coat around a little boy’s shoulder to let him know that the world hadn’t ended.”
