It was for first place - “A Showdown at The OK Corral” - - - Back & Forth it went :
A’s up 4-3 through two innings / 10-10 through four innings / Yankees up 13-11 through five / A’s up 16-14 through six .
Hurn , Jacobson , Toro , Rivera , Alumbaugh were supplying the offense punch for the Yankees - while Zelazny , Peppin , Crowell, and , Hicks were doing the same for the A’s.
Then the “big boys” got started ! Massive home-runs be Eddie Hurn & Dave Doerbaum , and , an , inside-the-park job, by the crowd favorite , Jose (little-Guz) Rivera , got the standing room crowd & the million-plus ESPN national TV audience on their feet .
When it settled in , the Yankees tallied 14 runs ( through the last three innings ) to walk off with a 28-18 victory . Eddie Hurn hit for the “cycle” , as He , & Les Jacobson had a perfect 5 for 5 day at the plate . Dave Doerbaum had an truly awesome 4-5 performance , despite the Yankees playing five outfielders whenever he stepped up to bat . The Yankees got 4-hit performance from Juan Toro , as did , the A’s Walt Deemie
Yankee Bombers :
Hurn-Jacobson 5 hits apiece
Toro 4 hits
Rivera-Alumbaugh- Guzman-Book
( 3 hits apiece )
A’s ABC’s :
Doerbaum-Deemie 4 hits apiece
Hicks-Peppin 3 hits apiece
