Tuesday Field B

That's some cold batters

A real GREAT come from behind win was posted by team Leggett as they  SCORED 9 of their runs in the 8th & 9th to edge team Sessink 15-14.  A temporary wild streak was posted by Dick Sessink in the 8th when he walked three out of four batters bringing the team just four down with one to go. Team Sessink brought six batters to the plate in the 9th but did not score.  This set the scene for a dramatic win.

The wildness continued into the bottom of 9 .  With one out and men on first & second Walt Leggett hit a sharp shot to second which might have ended the game with a double play but all runners were safe setting the opportunity for Duff Hill to be a hero.  He delivered a single to left scoring the tying & winning runs.
The stats showed that there were more walks and errors than hits but Vassurl Bess was able to post a perfect day with 4-4 and a walk.  Wayne Mundy was the only other player for team Leggett posting three hits.
Team Sessink was led by Bill Ravo who went 4-5.  Ron Thompson, Elmer Black & Richie Moots all posted three hits.
No Enjoyment book were sold Tuesday. Bring in the money & checks Friday and pick up your book.

It was Cold As...

The BP Line Up (They look cold to me)

Fill in the blank ... but it sure was cold this morning. We've been used to playing in 80 degrees plus so fifty was definitely cold.  It could have been worse ... it could have snowed.  Even so we made do without our commish.  Thanks to Chuck Duff and Tom Wise for helping sort out the line-ups. Also let's not fail to mention the umpire expertise of Joe D'herin.  Thanks again Joe!

Today we had a three team American League game on field C and a Two team National League contest on B field.

With a profusion of pitchers, I chose to refer to the teams as Constantine (Hit or Yankees), Gonzalez (Sit or Angels) and Dampier (Field not so Giants) after the lead-off batters for each team.

The hitting team started the scoring with a 5 bagger highlighted by a Kurt Coffman round tripper thanks to  an outfield error allowing the ball to get to the fence.

The "Angels" followed with 7 hits in a row and also scoring 5 runs without making an out.  Regis Finnegan's ground rule double was the hit of the inning. Regis bounced one 20 feet in the air and over the fence off the rock hard warning track.

Team Dampier followed Fred's lead-off double (pretty routine for Fred) with a couple of hits but only scored two in the inning.

The second inning saw the hitting team score the only pair of runs to take the lead.

The excitement in the third was provided by a Les Jacobson shot off the 300ft sign in center field resulting in a double. But even given that start the Yankees only posted two runs. The Angels were only able to get 4 batters to the plate and failed to score.  The Giants meanwhile, managed to post three runs sparked by a JD Davis double.

After three we stood at 9-5-5.

In the fourth the Yankees scored one followed by the "Angels" 4 runs off 6 hits and a gooseegg for the Giants.

The uneventful fifth saw zeros posted by the Hit and Sit squads while the fielding team racked up one.

Then team Constantine was held scoreless in the sixth followed by 3 runs on 5 hits for team Gonzalez and a single run by team Dampier.

After six we had a score of  10-12-7

Then in the final frame the Yankees came through to take the lead by scoring 3 runs as the bottom three of their order all reached base. Then the "Angels" managed to load the bases after two outs but failed to score anyone and the Giants were only able to manage one.

Final score 13-12-8

Leading Hitters:
Team Constantine;
Chris Constantine 3 for 4 with two doubles and Ed Kline 3 for 3 with a triple

Team Gonzalez;
Regis Finnegan 3 for 4 and a double, Ron Butler 3 for 3, George Radlien 3 for 3 and a triple

Team Dampier;
Fred Dampier 3 for 4 and a double

Friday Oct 26 game Field D

The National league had a closely contested game with Team Thompson besting team Mills 15-10 with the game being determined in the sixth with four runs coming across for the home team and the visitors being blanked.  Byrd, Chamblee and Zelazny all had four hits, including a homer by Bob, for the winners.
The second place team was led by Kline and  Moots who both had three hits and a walk.  It was good to see Mike Stepp show some of his former speed when he legged out a four bagger , hit to the fence, in the 3rd inning.
Joel Freedman  was a volunteer umpire for us today.  Thanks for your help, Joel.
Don't forget to bring a check for $30.00 made out to Winter Haven Sr. Softball for your enjoyment book.   This is our annual fund raiser and they make excellent Holiday gifts.  See Don Witmer or Ron Thompson for your copy.  Also a reminder that is is time to turn in your nominations for the Polk County Senior Softball Hall of fame.

Hurricane Sandy Blows Across the Diamondplex

Hurricane Sandy, who was spinning off the east coast, brought some early morning rains that made Fields B and C not playable. Not to be discouraged by a little rain, we played on Fields D and E. The strong winds from Hurricane Sandy remained long after the rain had gone. The Pitchers on Field E, Larry Wells, Jerry Witter and Matt LoPiccolo, did a great job pitching in the strong winds. Team LoPiccolo started the game going strong but a 11-11-3 double play made by Don Witmer ended their quest for a perfect inning. Team Witter came out hitting and managed to score three runs. Then, the big boys from Team Wells came up to bat and showed us how to hit. They scored 4 runs in the first inning, five runs in the second inning and four more runs in the third inning. Not to be outdone, Team LoPiccolo came on strong in the top of the sixth inning and tied the score. Team Witter left their bats at home and were never in the race to the top. In the bottom of the sixth, Team Wells manage to eke out one run to take the lead. In the top of the seventh, Team LoPioccolo could not manage to score, Team Witter could not catch up and Team Wells took the trophy home. Final score was 16 - 8 - 17.

Hitting was the name of the game today. Regis Finnegan hit a boomer over the left field fence, Jose Rivera hit a gapper for an in the park home run and Bill Wolfe hit a gapper for a triple.

Leading Hitters for Team Wells were: Larry Wells 4/4, Don Keller 4/5, Jose Rivera 3/4, Bill Wolfe 3/4, Dave Hartley 3/4, Chris Constantine 3/5.

Leading Hitters for Team Witter were: Jack Benson 4/4 and Nick Matta 3/3.

Leading Hitters for Team LoPiccolo were: Regis Finnegan 4/4 and Jimmy Laffoon 3/4.

Welcome back Bill Wolfe. Today was his first day back in Winter Haven and he can still hit the ball.

National League (Field C) Recap.

Marshall slugs one

The senior league had an even bigger blow out than the Giants & St.Louis in the National League play offs.

Team Mills clobbered team Thompson 24-9 scoring in each of the nine innings and the majority of their runs were scored after two outs.

Richie Moots, Frank Miller, and Larry Chrest all chipped in with four hits and the first nine hitters all scored at least one run. The score sheet showed a home run by Bill Miller which let the outfielder avoid a three base error. Ray Mills pitched well and got great support from a great fielding outfield.

The Thompson team never scored more than two runs in any inning but did have Litzke & Thompson go four for four and Leggett & Smith went three for four. Thompson scored four runs and no one else could find the plate more than one time in the losing effort.

Don't forget to bring $30.00 in cash or a check made out to Winter Haven Softball for your enjoyment book which is our annual fund raiser.  The book has hundreds of 2-for-1 offers and is a great way to stretch your purchasing power while supporting our great league.

See you all again Friday.    RDT

Three Teams on Field B Today

Where's Juan?

We tried out a new sign up sheet system today and I think it made it a lot easier to assign players to teams, so that's a good thing. Three teams contested on Field B and two on Field C.

On Field B things got off to a slow start with the Hitting Team lead batters of Gonzalez, Rivera and Lafoon going down in order. But then the Sitting Team scored their 5 bringing 9 batters to the plate in the inning. Then to top things off the Fielding Team plated the maximum 5 runs aided by a Jack Benson round tripper past the right fielder.

In the second inning the Hitting Team got on the board with 2 runs followed by a pair from the Middles squad and a single run for the bottom third.

In the third inning the Hitting Team bats finally came alive to score 5 runs on 8 consecutive singles. The Sit Team was limited to one run while the Fielding Team showed their speed on the bases with doubles by Constantine and Toro to rack up 4 runs in the last of the thrid.

After three the score was 7-8-10.

In the fourth everyone  went scoreless.

In the fifth Freddy Gonzalez tripled with two out and was scored on Jose Rivera's single but that was all they could do.  The Sit Team put up a zero while the Fielding team plated 2 runs following a Juan Toro lead-off double.

The Sit Squad managed a couple of runs in 6th off a pair of singles and a John Byrd double. The Sit team again went down with a goosegg as did the Fielding Team.

Going into the last inning we stood at 10-8-12

In the seventh the Sitting Team scored a pair to tie the game followed by three for the Sitting Boys off a Larry Nelson homer which left things at 12-11-12.  All the Fielding Team had to do was score one run to record the win.  A lead-off fly out was followed by a Tom Hamilton single, a Juan Toro double (again) and an intentional walk to Frank Jacobs.  Bob Hite came to the plate with one out and the bases loaded.  Of course he delivered a single to score the winning run.

Final Score 12-11-13  it doesn't get much better than that.I guess the new sign-in system worked for today anyway.

Outstanding Fielding plays were turned in by Al Andrews snagging a deep fly ball behind the right fielder, an outstanding flat out running catch in center by Juan Toro and a nice throw by Freddy Gonzalez to get the runner at third.

Outstanding Batters included:
Freddy Gonzalez 3 for 4 and a triple
Jose Rivera 3 for 4
Bob Zelazny and JD Davis 3 for 3
Russ King and Al Andrews 3 for 4
Larry Nelson 4 for 4 and a home run
Tom Hamilton 3 for 4
Juan Toro 3 for 4 and two doubles
Bob Hite 3 for 3 and a sac fly

Welcome back to Al Andrews and the rest of you returning snow birds.

A Special Thanks goes out to Joe D'Herin for umpiring again today.  Thanks Joe

Welcome Back to Some of Our Snowbird Friends

Nick, Freddy & Juan

A hearty welcome to more of our returning snowbirds who showed up to play today. Tom Hamilton, Jack Benson and Don Held were with us on this beautiful Friday morning. Also, welcome back to Roger Edwards after being gone for six weeks while he recovered from surgery. The game on Field B started out like gangbusters for Team Witter. Seven of the first eight batters got a hit while scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first inning, Team Matta was held scoreless. Team Witter started the second inning with the first two batters making outs. Then, the offense took off again and scored five more runs. Team Matta was held scoreless in the second inning also. But, as was expected out of Team Matta, they began scoring runs and playing outstanding defense in the third inning. They held Team Witter to two runs in the third inning and then held Team Witter scoreless for four innings while racking up eleven runs. Beginning the ninth inning, the score was Team Witter 14 and Team Matta 11. Team Witter managed to get one run in the top of the ninth so Team Matta needed four runs for a tie and five runs for a win. Jimmy Laffoon started the rally for team Matta and before you knew it, the bases were loaded with two outs and the wining run was on second base. However, Team Witter managed to get the third out before the Team Matta scored the winning run. A very  competitive game was played with the final score being Team Witter 15 and Team Matta 14.

Leading Hitters for Team Witter were Tom Hamilton, 4/5, Freddie Dampier, Roger Edwards and J.D. Davis were 3/4.

Leading Hitters for Team Matta were Nick Matta 3/3, Jimmy Laffoon, Don Keller and Don Held were 4/5.

Feeling like the Yankees (on field C)

Some Yankees!

Team Yankees(oops) Holden went down to a resounding defeat at the hands of Teams Mills and Wells.

Similarities are drawn when you look at the batting averages for the top hitters on Team Holden and the Yankees. The game got off to a slow start for Denny's team as they were not able to generate any offense and managed zero runs through the first three innings.

Team Wells fared no better seeing zero runs through the first four innings.

Alas, this was not the case for Team Mills that scored four runs in the first, followed by one run in the second and third innings. The big hit for Team Mills was Larry Powell's triple.
Team Holden had a small rally in the fourth and fifth innings and scored once in each. The big hit coming off Gary Turpin's bat to lead off the fifth. It was his first day playing in the league. While the scoring was encouraging, it was surpassed by Teams Wells and Mills. Team Wells scored six in the fifth off eight singles. Team Mills scored five in the fifth off some well placed singles.

The seventh was another for the books. Team Mets (oops) Holden scored only one run to fall well short of the other two teams. I used the Mets instead of Yankees because they looked like the Mets on defense. Team Mills scored nine runs in their third of the inning when Team Holden couldn't seem to make a catch or a throw. Bobby Hite did get a legitimate triple but only after enough errors were made that he got up at all. Team Wells started the bottom of the inning strong but only managed one run.

The final scores being Team Mills 20
                                  Team Wells 10
                                  Team Holden 5.

Recognition for outstanding play goes to:

Bobby Hite         4 for 5 with a triple
Larry Powell       3 for 3 with a triple
Reggie Barnes     3 for 3

Clear Blue Skies (Tuesday 10/16)

Don lines one up

Another beautiful early fall day and the turnout showed it. Three teams for 'B' field and a mere two on 'C'. A few more players and we'll be using 3 fields.

Field B

The hitting team on field 'B', pitched by Larry Wells,  got off to a slow start with zero runs and only two batters reaching base on a pair of hits.  The sitting team, Jerry Witter pitching, managed 2 runs after two outs with a string of hits and some good base running.  The fielding team with Walt Leggett and Ray Mills sharing the pitching duties, sent 8 batters to the plate and scored four runs starting with a lead-off inside-the-park homer by Bob Hite.

In the second the hitting team again went scoreless and the sitting team managed only one run.  The fielding team on the other hand scored 3 runs after a lead-off walk, and a single followed by a bases clearing triple by Bob Hite.  Bob was then scored on a Dick Mahon double.

The third inning saw the hitting team finally come to life and make up for lost ground.  They scored seven to tie the game, led by Bob Zelazny's bases loaded inside-the-park round tripper. The sitting team again scored a single run followed by a null frame for the fielding 11 (or12).

After 3 we stood at 7-4-7 ...

In the fourth the hitting team went 3 up 3 down followed by the sitting and fielding teams each posting a pair.

Larry Wells' hitting squad again rallied in the fifth lead by another homer off Bob Zelazny's bat.  This time it was a three run shot followed by 2 more runs to post the maximun 5 for the inning. The sitting and fielding teams failed to score.

The sixth was a repeat of the fifth almost with Bob Zelazny hitting a ball to the fence for his third homer of the day and leading his team to another 5 run inning. Once again the sit and field team went scoreless.

After 6 it was 17-6-9

In the final and unlimited frame the hit team went 3 up and 3 down thanks to a nice double play.  The sit team started with a Chris Constantine double but Chris scored the only run for them that inning. The fielding team went scoreless.

Final Score: 17-7-9

You figure out who beat who??

Outstanding players included Chris Constantine 3 for 4, Larry Chrest 3 for 4, Wayne Mundy 4 for 4, Bob Zelazny 4 for 4 and 3 homers, Dean Scapler 3 for 4, Larry Wells 3 for 4, Bob Hite 4 for 4 with a homer and a triple, Dick Mahon 3 for 4

Field C
George lofts a strike

The game played on Frank White field today featured The Larry Powell Allstars vs The George Radlein Wounded Warriors which included four players requiring runners .

Team Powell started slow as great pitching by George Radlien, backed with solid defense by his wounded warriors held the Allstars to four runs though 5 innings.

Meanwhile the Warriors were scoring runs in bunches. They scored 5 in the bottom of the first, capped by Nick Matta's bases loaded, bases 3 run double. They added five more in the 2nd, on back-to-back doubles from Frank Jacobs and Don Scarborough. The warriors continued their scoring with four in the 3rd aided by Ed Sullivan's second straight hit, and added three more in the 4th.

After five innings the score was 4 to 17.

You just knew Powell's Allstars would start hitting. They put up four in the 6th on back to back home runs by Don Keller and Les Jacobson. However the Warriors answered in the bottom of the inning with a 5 spot, keyed by Fred Dampier's seeing-eye double

After six we stood at 8 to 22.

After a quiet 7th the Allstars scored four in the top of the 8th as Don Keller smashed his second home run of the game. The Warriors were held scoreless again in the 8th by relief pitcher J. D. Davis.
JD & Larry enjoy the game

After eight the score was 12 to 22 .

The Allstars managed only one run in the top of the 9th to finish the scoring.

Final score:  Radlein's  Wounded Warriors 22 , Powell's Allstars 13

Stars Included:

Fred Dampier 5 for 5  with 2 doubles, Les Jacobson 2 for 2 with a homer,Sac-Fly and 2 walks, Don Keller 4 for 5, with 2 homers, Don Scarborough 4 for 5, and a double.

The weather is changing in Winter Haven

Well, we are finally back to playing softball again after two games were rained out. The weather in Winter Haven this morning was delightful. The ballplayers were frisky and ready to go.

The new Commissioner and BoD members were announced today (effective 10/15) with Bob Zelazny taking the helm from Don Witmer. Welcome aboard Bob and thank-you Don for 4 great years. Keep your eye on this space for the complete election results.

Bob and Don change watch
Forty Seven ball players showed up and and we had 4 teams. Games were played on Field B and Field C.

Players on field B found themselves with ideal playing conditions and two evenly matched teams, at least on paper. Expectations were high for a very competitive game. Unfortunately it was not to be.

The game started with both teams managing only one run apiece from the top of the line up. It was a different story the following inning with Josh Wells starting a five run rally resulting in Wells, Downs, Sessnink, Merritt, and Bloom crossing the plate.

Team Thompson was shut out in the second after two great catches by Marshal Bloom in the outfield. After sending nine batters to the plate in the second, Team Wells was shut down in the third and opened the door for Team Thompson, who managed to put up four runs after the first two batters had made outs.

The fourth inning fortunes turned for team Thompson. Team Wells scored four runs highlighted by a triple by Tommy Wise. Jimmy McPartlin was the lone base runner for Team Thompson in the bottom of the inning.

The fifth and sixth inning were interesting in that both teams managed three runs apiece Team Wells scored zero in the fifth and three in the sixth while Team Thomson did just the opposite scoring three in their half of the fifth and then being shut out in the sixth.

The seventh inning saw Josh start another rally for his team and score two runs bringing their total to fifteen. It looked like Team Thompson was going to make a game of it as the middle of the line up managed to score four runs and get close. But alas all good things must come to an end.

Team Wells must have had a team meeting between innings because they came out swinging and scored eleven runs in the last two innings with almost everyone hitting the ball hard. His motivational speech must have carried over to the defense as gloves that previously were suspect managed to hold onto everything and Team Thompson was unable to close the vast disparity in runs scored.

Final score Team Wells 26 and Team Thompson 14.

Key players in the game included:

Tommy Wise... six for six with a triple

Steve Hill.........four for five and a solid thrid base

Bob Hite.........four for four with a triple

Bob Zelazny....four for four with three doubles

Les Jacobson..six for six with no homers.

We want to welcome back Les "the big slambino" Jacobson and Floyd Welton who played with us today and Duff Hill who joined us today as a regular.

Big Les Jacobson (nice color-coordinated sunglasses Les!)

AND  Thanks to Chuck Duff for umpiring the game on B Field.  It's nice to have an umpire that knows the rules and hustles out to get a better view of the plays.  Thanks Chuck.
Chuck & Dick watch a Bobby Z drive

Big Russ is recovering nicely

On Field C, Jose Rivera started the game with an "in the park" home run but that was all Team Radlein could get across the plate that inning. In the bottom of the first inning, Jimmy Laffoon hit a gaper for a triple and was brought home by a hit from Frank Jacobs.

The game was a pitching duel between George Radlein and Nick Matta until the 8th inning. With the score tied at six all, team Matta had a big inning started by Jimmy Laffoon. Frank Miller got the last hit for the maximum of 5 runs for that inning.

The top on the ninth inning looked promising for Team Radlein when  newcomer Rick Woodard led off with a long ball over Freddie Gonzalez's head. Unfortunately, Rick didn't know about Freddie's speed and Jimmy's arm and got thrown out at third base. A great play from Freddie and Jimmy.

On Field C, we had two new ball players today. Please welcome to Rick Woodard and Jim Hamil to Winter Haven Senior Softball. Frank Miller is back with us again and can still hit the ball.

Leading Hitters of Field C were Eddie Kline, Frank Miller, Johnny Byrd and Richard Moots. They were all 3 for 4.

A big thanks to Joe D'Herin for umpiring on Field C. He did a great job.
Welcome Back Joe!

Stranded on a Deserted Island

George is happy for the win

The field C game was played between teams headed by George Radlien (away) and Larry Powell (home). Maybe as a sign of things to come, Fred Dampier led off the first with an inside-the-park homer smashed down the right field foul line.  After Ron Butler flied to left, Wayne Mundy, slugged another homer past the reaching glove of Richie Marino to right center.  That hit was followed by consecutive doubles by Jacobs and Schapler followed with singles by Chrest, Radlien and Bess. A Reg Barnes sac fly scored the fifth run of the inning.

The home team responded with 4 of their own on consecutive singles by Coffman, Wise, Toro and Marino, leaving us at 5-4.

The second inning was scoreless on both sides.

The third had Jacobs and Schapler again supplying a brace of doubles followed by a homer off the bat of Larry Chrest. The visitors recorded 3 runs in their half inning.

Larry Powell's crew started off with Tom Wise singling but reaching third on a fielding error, followed by a Juan Toro double and an inside the park home run off the bat of Richie Marino.  But after such a great start the defense held the home team to 3 runs.

Both teams again posted zeros in the 4th.

The fifth inning  saw Larry Chrest hit his second round tripper, driving in Dean Schapler ahead of him for the only two runs of the inning.   After 5 we stood at 10-7.

In the sixth the visitors were held to zero and the home team added a single run.

In the seventh, the visitors brought 9 batters to the plate and scored the max 5 runs mostly on clean singles. But alas the home team only responded with one run.

In the eighth, Larry Chrest added to his impressive totals with a bases loaded double.  The away boys wound up adding four to the home teams zero making the score 19-9 going into the final frame.

In the ninth the slugging visitors almost went in order and failed to score leaving the door wide open for a comeback.  Unfortunately the home team only managed to score a single run ending the game at 19-10.

Leading hitters for the visitors included Fred Dampier with a 4 for 5 day and a homer, Frank Jacobs also went 4 for 5 with three doubles, but Larry Chrest with a 5 for 5 day with two homers and a double takes first prize.

For the home team Rich Marino went 4 for 5 with a homer and Jim McPartlin went 3 for 4 with a walk.

Chris slugs one

Game two was played on the B field today as we had enough players for four teams. What looked to be a high scoring affair turned out to be a pitchers duel with only one team reaching double digits. The result might have been different if it weren't for the three times Team Wells came up short with the bases loaded.

The first inning saw both teams fail to cross the plate as the top of the line ups went four and out.

The second inning saw the middle of line up manage one run a piece when John Byrd made a great play on Bill Ravos' deep pop up  and ended Team Davis' rally. Team Wells went down so fast in the third (three outs on three pitches) that some of their team never got their gloves off. Certainly so fast we couldn't get a "true story" in. Gene Baker started a two run rally and crossed the plate on Freddie Gonzalez triple for Team Davis.Once again the bottom of the linup coming through in the clutch.

The fourth inning saw team Wells mount a comeback when the first five batters( Rivera, Byrd, Witmer,Duff, and Lopez) reached base and managed to score three big runs.. Good Pitching and strong defense shut down Team Davis in their half of the inning. The fifth inning saw Team Davis score twice as Gene Baker again started a two run rally. The next inning saw the middle of the lineup again manage to put numbers up for both teams.

In the seventh inning Team Wells scored twice to narrow the scoring gap but for the second straight inning left with the bases loaded. Gene Baker again started a two run rally which was a recurring theme as he did so three times. The eighth inning must have seemed like Ground Hog Day the movie as Team Wells left the bases loaded for the second time. Team Davis matched their two runs when the lead off hitters (Chris Constantine and Bill Ravo) got hits and scored.

As we went into the last inning, Team Davis was optimistic as Team Wells was sending up the bottom of their line up. Unfortunately for them, John Merritt and Ed Sullivan got solid hits and started what looked to be a potentially winning rally with the big hitters (Rivera, Bryd, Witmer, Duff, and Lopez) due up next. Fortunately Team Davis defense stepped up and managed to shut them down leaving the bases loaded again.  With a one run lead Team Davis did not have to go to bat depriving Gene Baker of a four for four day.Final score Team Davis 10, Team Wells 9.

MVPs today were Eddie Sullivan who squashed two rallys when he got a tough foul ball behind the plate and nailed Jimmy Laffoon as he was running to home.

Leading hitters for Team Wells were Jose Rivera going five for five, Jonathon Bryd, Sam Lopez, and Chuck Duff going three for four.

On Team Davis: Freddie Gonzalez, Jimmy Laffoon, and Chris Constantine were three for four. Hitting honors however go to Gene Baker who started three two run rallies and ended the day three for three.

Returning players today included Larry Chrest, Skip Morrison, Jim McPartland and Bill Ravo
