Reach For The Stars

While I was walkin' one mornin' for pleasure
I spied a young cowboy just ridin' along
His hat was throwed back and his spurs were a jinglin'
And as he approached he was singin' this song
Yippy ti yi yo get along little doggies it's your misfortune and none of my own
Yippy ti yi yo get along little doggies you know that Wyoming will be your new home.(Musical lyrics, Get Along little Doggies; Sons of The Pioneers).

We had an ol west shootout in the AL, at WHSS on 2/12.

Hitting Team, The Cowboys: Hicks, Hern, Netzel, Epperson, Gonzalez, Pep, Guttenberger, Witmer, Farinas and Newman.

Sitting Team, The Outlaws: Rad, Miller, Shirer, Guzman, Hamilton, Constantine, McFarland, Grove and D’Herin.

Fielding Team, The Sheriffs: Rivera, Keller, Stier, Quinones, Scherer, JD, Matta, Denny, Ramos and Navarez.

The Cowboys mosied up to the plate in the 1st inning and punched two doggies across the prairie. Hits by Hern, Netzel, Epperson, a sac by Gonzalez roped in the runs.

The Outlaws were the bad boys of senior softball in the 1st, they held up the bank and got away with 5 runs. Rad, Shirer, Guzman (double), Hamilton (triple) and McFarland skedaddled around the bases.

The Sheriffs, brought out the posse and went after the Outlaws. We scored 5 in the first and 4 in the 2nd, to take the lead. Rivera, Keller, Stier (double), TQ (double) Scherer (HR), JD, Matta and Denny took the bull by the horns in the first. Ramos, Keller (double), Stier, Sherer (triple) hit the ball plumb crazy in the 2nd. After two innings the score was Cowboys: 5- Outlaws: 5 and Sheriffs: 9.

“Never run a bluff with a six-gun.” – Bat Masterson

The Sheriffs continued bringing out the big guns in the next three innings, they created a stamped of runs. We scored 5 in the 3rd inning, 4 runs in the 4th inning and 3 runs in the 5th inning. Like Kurt Russell in the film Tombstone, we brought the thunder. “You called down the thunder, well now you’ve got it.” When Wyatt surprises Ike and the other Cowboys at the train station, the anger and hatred in Kurt Russell’s voice makes for one of the most captivating scenes in movie history. Which leads me to the rest of that line…  “Tell em the law’s coming. You tell em I’m coming, and hell’s coming with me!”

After 5 innings the score was Cowboys: 8- Outlaws: 12 and Sheriffs: 21.

It looked like the Outlaws were going to be locked up in the pokey. The Cowboys were a goner, they had all but cashed in their chips and were headed to the watering hole. “I’m not afraid to die like a man fighting, but I would not like to be killed like a dog unarmed.” – Billy the Kid in a letter to Governor Lew Wallace, March 1879. The Outlaws armed themselves to the teeth in the 6th and 7th inning. Down 9 runs, they went out and shot up the town; scoring 9 runs to tie the game. Hits by Rad, Miller, Shirer, Guzman, Constantine and Grove started the rally in the 6th. Hits by Grove, Rad (double), Miller, Shirer (triple) and a SF by Guzman ballyhooed the Outlaws to tie the game. Just maybe the banditos were able to belly Through the Brush – Dodge the law. It would be up to the Sheriffs to see if they could lasso the bandits and win the game in the bottom of the 7th.

“I’m your Huckleberry.” Most people have heard this line from Doc Holliday, Tombstone. Doc is getting a shave when Johnny Ringo is raging drunk and looking to play for blood. Matta and Denny cowboyed up with leadoff singles in the 7th. With runners on the corners and no outs, Ramos was walked intentionally to load the bases. Navarez then came up with guns blazing. He lined a single to drive in Stier, who was running for Matta, to win the game. Final Score: Cowboys: 11- Outlaws: 21- Sheriffs: 22.

From the film Tombstone; “You’re a daisy if you do.” After the famous OK Corral shootout, one of the Cowboys is about to shoot Doc, but Doc’s too quick and wins the draw.

Historic quotes from the old west:

“Perhaps I may yet die with my boots on.” — Wild Bill Hickok, who did die with his boots on.

“I found him a loyal friend and good company. He was a dentist whom necessity had made a gambler; a gentleman whom disease had made a vagabond; a philosopher whom life had made a caustic wit; a long, lean blonde fellow nearly dead with consumption and at the same time the most skillful gambler and nerviest, speediest, deadliest man with a six-gun I ever knew.”  – Wyatt Earp speaking of Doc Holliday.

“You come here to tell us lies. Go home where you came from.” — Crazy Horse to General Terry.

“Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything.” — Wyatt Earp.

“Shoot first and never miss.” – Bat Masterson.

“The Seventh can handle anything it meets.” – General George A. Custer while declining reinforcements for the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

“There is only one road away from trouble, and this is along the straight and narrow road.” – Otto Wood, in his book, The Life of Otto Wood.
