Seven Teams

Despite the bad weather from last night and threats of rain showers, 72 players showed up to play. We had three teams in the National League and four American League Teams. I guess some players wanted to use today to impress the new managers since the draft for the upcoming season is Friday. Sort of like the NFL Combine.

Field B

Two unevenly matched teams fought it out on B today.  They were unevenly matched since one team had 10 players and the other but 9.

The ten player squad  (Visitors) was pitched by Pat Lopiccolo and they supplied a catcher for the 9 player team pitched by Larry Wells.

The visitors started off a bit slow, scoring only 4 runs through the first three innings highlighted by Don Held's double and a triple.  The home team plated 7 runs over the first three led by a couple of doubles off Fred Dampier's bat and a Greg Bombard triple.

By the time the 7th inning finished the teams were tied at 13 runs each led by a Ron Butler triple and a Juan Toro double for the visitors while the home team made points off a Frank Jacobs triple, another set of doubles by Fred Dampier and  Greg Bombard.

Both squads went scoreless in the eighth leaving the final frame to decide the issue.  The visitors took advantage of their unlimited  half by scoring 7 runs on 8 singles and an Ed Gazarek double. The Home squad started things off great on yet another Fred Dampier double down the line, a triple by Frank Jacobs, another pair of doubles by Les Jacobson and Greg Bombard. But alas only 4 runs crossed the plate in spite of all those fireworks.

Final Score Visitors 20 Home 17.

Key Hitters:
  • Butler 4 for 5 sac fly, triple, double
  • Held 4 for 5 sac fly, double
  • Marino 5 for 6
  • Zakrowski 4 for 6
  • Lopiccolo 4 for 6
  • Dampier 6 for 7 4 doubles
  • Jacobs 5 for 6 2 triples

Field D

To say this was an interesting game is an understatement. It had a little of everything. One team jumping out to a ten run lead only to go into slow motion and fall behind in the eighth inning. They immediately regained the lead in the top of the ninth. As Kenny Rogers says, "Don't count the chips til the dealing is through", the home team scratched out a come from behind victory with the final score, Team Powell 23 and Team Matta 22.
The outcome would not have been that close if not for a score-keeping error in the first inning. Team Matta scored what  they thought was five runs and went on defense. Team Powell has not been able to put a single runner out during the run. After taking the field they discovered that only four runs had actually been scored. (remember  the game was a one run affair). The second inning was pretty much the same except they counted all the runs correctly.

So at the end of two innings it was nine to nothing as Team Powell could not seem to get a break. Each Team scored one in the third.
Team Matta scored three runs in the fourth to widen their lead. Team Powell finally started to put a couple hits together and scored eight runs in the the bottom of the inning with Dave Hartley getting a home run. The sixth saw no runs scored by Team Matta while Edwards and Zelazny scored for Team Powell.

Team Powell continued to close the gap in the seventh by outscoring their opponent three to one. The eighth inning saw the sleeping giants awaken scoring five runs with a homer by Don Keller and a triple by Dean Schapler. Team Powell managed three runs with the help of Dave Hartley's triple.

Team Matta scored three in the top of the ninth to increase their lead to 22 to 19. But as previously stated their victory was not to be as Team Powell's first five batters got hits to produce enough runs to claim victory.
Key performers Team Matta

  • Dean Schapler    6 for 7
  • Don Keller            2 doubles and a homer
  • Nick Matta        5 for 6
  • John Byrd    5 for 6

Key performers Team Powell
  • Don Scarbourough    5 for 6
  • Dave Hartley    2 triples and a homer
  • Larry Powell    5 for 5

Field C

Even though many of us thought today would be rained out after a cloudy start, the weather brightened up. It was a -great day to be playing.  The National league had a three team format.  The game started with the Hit team scoring 3, Sit team scoring 5 and the Field team scoring none.

The second inning, the Sit team scored 1, Field scored 1 and Hit scored none.  It looked like the Sit team was off to an early start.  The next 3 innings the Hit team scored 8 unanswered runs.  At the top of the sixth, the score was Hit 11, Sit 6 and Field 1.

In the sixth inning, the Sit team scored 2.   In the seventh inning, the Hit team scored 4 runs for a total of 15 runs.  The Sit team got started up with 2 men on base. Fitzke hit a double scoring a run.  Bess almost scored on Fitzke's double but was thrown out at home plate.  Thompson drove 2 more runs in and scored on a hit by Barnes.  Unfortunately, the next two batters were put out.

The Field team got up and started a rally scoring 4 runs before being retired.  The final scores were Hit team 15 runs, Sit team 12 runs and Field team 5 runs.
