Pearl Harbor Day

There's only a few of us left that are old enough to have heard the news of the Pearl Harbor attack, even fewer old enough to have been actually involved.  So it is with life, even more the reason to think about what it meant to another generation, the greatest generation, and be thankful for their sacrifice.

Field B

We had six teams again today so games were contested on Fields B, C and D.  The National League game got things going on Field B with teams pitched by Ray Mills and Arvil Waddell.  Team Mills started things off by posting a five run first on 6 consecutive hits with a double off the bat of Jerry Remington driving in the last.  Team Waddell answered with 3 of their own including a Bob Allen double and aided by a few errors.

The next few innings saw Team Mills score 1 in the second  while Team Waddell racked up one in the third. Through 3 innings the score was Visitors 6, Home Team 4.

The Mills squad then racked up 2 in the 4th, 1 in the fifth, and 3 in the sixth while the Waddell team managed only 3 in the sixth. This left the score at 12-7 in favor of Team Mills after 6.

In the seventh Team Mills led off with a Deem double but failed to score.  Team Waddell took advantage batting out 8 singles to score the maximum 5 runs to tie things up.

The Visitors replied in the eighth with a 4 run posting to naught by the home squad to reestablish the lead.  Ron Thompson's triple was the hit of the inning.

The visitors then added 5 in the ninth after two lead off outs.  Team Waddell attempted a comeback but alas too little, too late, as they only managed 3 runs leaving the final at 21-15 for Team Mills.

Key offensive players Included:
  • Chrest 4 for 6
  • Thompson 4 for 6 triple
  • Mahon 4 for 6
  • Taylor 5 for 6
  • Deem 4 for 6 double
  • Waddell 4 for 5 and a sac-fly
  • Yarletts 3 for 4
Also note that our teammate Jerry Witter had to take his wife back home to Sarye, Pa for medical attention as Shirley was having heart problems.  Gerry may not be back before mid-season.  Let's all keep Jerry and Shirley in our thoughts and prayers.

Field C

Today's game made up of all American League players turned out to be one of the more exciting games of the fall. Team Radlein built a 20 to 8 led going into the sixth inning aided by clutch hitting , good base running, and stellar defense by the entire team. It was a different story in the seventh, eighth, and ninth as Team Davis outscored Team Radlein nine to nothing. It was closer than that when you consider that there were two runners stranded in the bottom of the ninth.

Team Radlein scored five in the first with only one out being made, Reg got a double. Team Davis responded by scoring the first three hitters in the bottom of the inning. The second saw only one run being scored by Team Radlein on a Herbie O rbi. In the third Team Radlein put up four with Bobby Reagan hit a gapper to the fence. Team Davis was three and out. The fourth was another good inning for Team Radlein as they scored five more powered by Reg's double over the defense that was already playing back. Tommy Hamilton scored the lone run for Team davis. Juan Toro led off the fifth with a double and was the first of  the three runs Team Radlein scored. Team Davis scored four to inch closer as Freddie Gonzalez stretched out a double. The sixth  inning was the end of Team Radleins run production. Don Kellers home run was the big hit. Team Davis was three and out.
Motivated by some close calls that went against them, Team Davis came out smoking over the next three innings, scoring one in the seventh, six in the eighth, and four in the ninth. The big hits coming off the bats of Ed Gazarak (double) and Frank Jacobs (triple). The big rally in the eighth was cut short when Brent Alumbaugh threw a rocket to Ari Harris that just beat Frank Jacobs racing  to the plate for the third out. Team Radlein was obviously shaken as Team Davis scored three runs off the bats of their first four batters. Then with two out and two men on base,Team Radlein came up with a defensive gem that closed the game out.
