Field B
Let's see, which bat still has hits left in it? |
The
sun was out on Field B this morning and it looked like it may be a
factor in the game based on the moaning and groaning during batting
practice but it was a non-issue when Josh’s Defenders took the field and
JD’s Hitters opened up with a five run first inning. Fred Dampier led
off with a double to right and scored on a single by Herb Oesterreid.
After a fielder’s choice, the Hitters followed with five straight
singles to plate the additional four runs.
When the hitting barrage
continued in the second, highlighted by doubles by Dampier and Tommy
Wise and five more scored, it looked like the rout was on. But the
Defenders came scratching back two runs in the first and one more in the
second and after Josh hung a zero on the Hitters in the third with a
1-2-3 inning on three pitches, they drew to within four runs in the
bottom of the third with another three spot. Then their bats went silent
for the next three innings.
All
of JD’s Hitters had at least two hits and were led with four hits each
from Ari Harris, Bob Zelazny and Fred and five hits by Herb O.. They
ended their day with a three run ninth and a total of 22 runs.

The
Defenders mounted a comeback in the home seventh and eighth with some
hitting of their own and aided by 4 errors. They scored eight runs to
bring their total for the day to 14. Leading hitters were Jim Lafoon
with a 5 for 5 day and Al Andrews who was 5 for 6.
Field C
The senior division played a closely contested game on Field C. I say closely contested because it appears that the game ended in a tie at 12 runs apiece. The score sheets where so poorly kept that I deduced the final score by counting the blackened pips rather than trying to compute total from the bottom lines. One score sheet had the total at 15-12 and the other at 12-15 however after a careful forensic analysis it appears that the 12 run rule applies.
Based on the board above (awesome calligraphy by the way) it appears that Ray Mills pitched for the visitors (who I also assume batted first) and that Arvil Waddell pitched for the home squad. The visitors went down in order in the first (so much for the line-up strategy) and Team Waddell scored a pair off a Fred Duchan double, a single and an error.
In the second inning, the visitors responded with 4 runs on 5 hits capitalizing on a Bill Ravo double. The Home Team failed to score.
The third saw fortunes reversed as the home squad plated four runs with Ed Guspyt and Marshall Bloom contributing doubles. After 3 innings the score stood at 4-6 Home Team ahead.
The visitors took the lead in the 4th with the only 5 run inning of the game, on a raft of singles while the home boys only managed a single run.
Neither team scored in the 5th.
In the sixth inning, the visitors got 3 across mainly due to a Larry Chrest double. The Home team went 4 up 3 down leaving one stranded. After six the score was visitors 12 and the home team 7.
According to the score sheets, Team Mills went scoreless for the last three innings sending up 4 in the 7th and going 3 up 3 down in the 8th and 9th. The Home team plated 3 in the 7th highlighted by an Arvil Waddell double and tied the game with 2 in the 8th off a Frank Miller triple. They went down in order in the ninth leaving the very unsatisfactory result of a tie at 12-12.
Key Hitters included:
- Chrest 3 for 4 double
- Bess 2 for 3
- Ravo 3 for 3 double
- Guspyt 4 for 4 double
- Miller 3 for 4
- Bloom 2 for 3 double
Field D
Larry Powell's team started off with a bang scoring 8 runs in the first four innings with Denny Shaffer's team only scoring 3 runs.
In the 7th & 8th innings Shaffer's team scored 8 runs to take the lead 15-14.
