New Years Day
The Diamond Plex will be closed on New Years Day so there will be no games this Tuesday. We will be back in action on Friday. Please plan on attending ( and maybe getting there a little early) as most managers want to complete uniform distribution before the season starts the following Tuesday ( the 8th of January). Remember we start a half hour later beginning 8 January.

Final Games of 2012
Field B
With many of our players visiting family up north, the National League fielded two strong teams on Field B and saw an epic battle where for the first time in many sessions, Team Waddell went down to defeat. The final score was Team Wilcox 10 and Team Waddell 6. The first inning was relatively quiet with Team Waddell scoring the only run when Eddie Kline led off and scored. They padded their lead in the second by outscoring Team Wilcox 3 to 0 with John Merritt's double being the big hit. In the third, Team Waddell was shut down while Team Wilcox tied the score by posting four runs. The fourth inning saw Team Waddell tie up the game as Doug Chamlee led off and scored the only run by either team.
The fifth inning looked promising for Team Waddell but fell short as they stranded two runners. Team Wilcox scored five off six straight singles to take the lead which they would not give up. Both teams were unable to score in the sixth and managed only one run apiece in the seventh. Team Waddell again was unable to capitalize on early hits and ended up scoring zero and stranding three in the eighth. Team Wilcox went four and out but still enjoyed a comfortable lead going into the final frame. With the top of the lineup coming to bat it looked promising for Team Waddell as two of the first three batters reached base in the ninth. Solid defense got the next two batters and preserved the win for Team Wilcox.
Key performances
- Avril Waddell 4 for 5
- Doug Chamlee 3 for 4
- John Merritt 4 for 4
- Frank Miller 4 for 4
Field D
The American League fielded 3 teams on 'D' today and for a while there it seemed that nobody wanted to cross the plate. I guess everyone was just a bit 'cold'.
The hit squad led by Jeff Simon scored one in the first off Steve Hill's lead-off walk but that was it for the inning. The second was much the same with Jeff's team scoreing 2 off a pair of doubles by Bob Hite and Dennis Borowitz.
The Fielders got on the board with a 5 run third inning sparked by triples from Rob Reagan and Mike Gatto and a list of singles. They scored 5 without making an out.
After 3 the score stood at 3-0-5.
The hit team then posted two more scoreless innings while the sit team decided to start hitting posting 5 runs in each of the next three highlited by a Roger Edwards double in the 4th, a Frank Jacobs 3-bagger in the 5th and doubles by Larry Powell and Frank Jacobs in the 6th. Meanwhile the fielders plated 3 runs in the 5th and 6th innings leaving the score at 6-15-11 going into the final frame.
The Hitters needed 9 to tie but only managed one while the Sitters continued their streak sending 12 batters to the plate and getting 7 home on doubles by Frank Jacobs, and Don Hawbaker. The Fielders came up needing 11 runs to tie in their part of the 7th and they gave it the old try scoring 4 runs highlited by a Fred Dampier double but then hitting into the game ending double play.
The Final Tally was 7-22-15

Holiday Break
Hi All,
After Friday's Rain Out, we're all getting a longer than expected holiday break; hopefully the weather will cooperate and let us get some games in this Friday.
First of all since I won't see you until after Christmas, MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Now then, I must say that I am very well pleased with the new 'web page' so far. Last month we averaged a little under 100 views per day and so far this month we're well over that, in the neighborhood of 135 hits per day. I suppose that's partly due to the team rosters being published. It's not every day we have such interest.
I think we can enhance the utility of the web page by using more of the features available to readers. One important feature is the 'comments' link at the bottom of every post. This link allows you to express your ideas to the readers of this page. The comments are 'moderated' that is the commish or I will review them before they are posted but mainly we're looking for foul language or personal attacks from 'trolls' and not to disturb the intended message.
The comments should be used to offer corrections to the game summaries or to offer suggestions about how we can improve the club or to discuss rules changes, that sort of stuff. Just leave out the politics.
You can also submit other interesting softball related stuff if you like. Just email whatever to me or Bob and if it fits within our context, we'll post it for everyone's benefit. Yes, we can post pictures or video snips too. Likewise, if there's anything you would like us to post just let us know and we'll try to accommodate it. Speaking of pictures, Gene Baker has been especially prolific lately. Check out the albums link. You may find an action shot of yourself!
Likewise check out the Hall of Fame pages. We're trying to fill out the HoF list with more detail so if you have articles or links to information related to our HoF inductees please send it along and we'll get it posted.
Our sponsor links are important too. Try out the links there to get more information on just who our sponsors are. Please patronize their businesses and don't forget to thank them personally for their sponsorship if you get the chance.
The page now also has links to Lakeland Senior Softball and the Florida Half-Century Amateur Softball Association.
Also note that we try to notify players about such things as Rain Outs as promptly as possible. On game days we show up at the fields before 7am and make a judgement call on whether the fields can be used or not. Then we try to get a notice posted on the web page before 7:15am or so. So if you have any idea that we might not be playing, check the web page before you leave home. It might save you a trip.
Thanks for reading and again, Merry Christmas.

Team Trials
Today everyone signed in by team (excepting a few pool players) and we tried to keep teams together and just fill a few spots. We ended up with 7 teams, three National League and 4 American League. You can tell when you have Canadian players on your team, they're the ones with hockey tape on their bat handles.
The Hitters failed to get a run across in the first but the Sitters racked up 5 highlighted by doubles off the bats of Elmer Black and Walt Leggett. The fielders went down in order.
In the second inning, fortunes reversed somewhat with the Hitters and Fielders both plating two runs and the sitters taking the zero.
The third saw the Hitters again go scoreless while the Sitters scored a pair off a Vassurl Bess double with two outs. The fielders plated one despite taking a couple of strikeouts. After 3 the score stood at 2-7-3.
The fourth saw only one run scored. The hitters managed to capitalize on a Mike Stepp lead off double for the only run of the inning. Arvil Waddell scored for the sitters in the fifth while the Sitters posted 3, a score that was matched by the fielders with a string of singles.
The Hitters made their move in the sixth inning plating 6 runs highlighted by a Doug Chamblee double. The sitters put up another zero while the fielders plated 3 with a Frank Miller double.
After 6 the score was 10-10-9. It doesn't get much closer. In the unlimited eighth the Hitters took over the lead with 2 runs while the other teams failed to score. Ending the game at 12-10-9.
Leading Hitters included:
The visitors got things going with a four run first inning off a Ron Butler home run through the gap in right center and a Les Jacobson double. The Home Boys managed to score Jose Rivera after his double but that was all.
In the second, the visitors plated 5 runs when the home squad issued walks to Gerry Andrews, Ron Butler and Les Jacobson. The home squad scored two on a string of singles..
Les Jacobson's triple in the third led the visitors effort to plate 5 again but then the Homers got 4 across thanks to a Tom Wise drive past the outfield that went to the fence for a homer.
After 3 the score stood at 14-7 Visitors.
The Home team took advantage of a zero run inning for the Visitors and plated 7 runs as they evened the score. Fred Dampier's Home Run past the right fielder led a hitting rally as the Visitors only managed to get one out.
The visitors went down in order again leaving the door open for a 3 run fifth inning by the home squad highlighted by an Ed Gazarek triple.
In the sixth the Visitors got back on track and followed up a solo shot over the center-field fence by Les Jacobson with 3 more runs. But alas the Home boys rallied with 5 more runs off a string of singles and a Fred Dampier double.
After 6 the score was a relatively close 18-22.
The 7th, 8th and 9th were disastrous for the Visiting Team as they went scoreless while giving up 5 runs in each of the three remaining innings to the Home Squad. Highlights included a Gazarek double, a Gallagher triple and another Dampier double.
Final Score 18-32 and a win for Nick Matta's (mostly) team.

One final note:
It was good to see Ed Schmiedeke out at the field on Friday. He is not playing this year and here to sell his home & belongings and relocating back to St. Louis for the balance of his retirement years. Ed has been in the league for over 25 years and was instrumental in all aspects of the League success in the late 80's and throughout the 90's & beyond. He was my first manager in l996 and was always a gentleman on and off the field. Good luck and may God bless Ed & his family.Ronald Thompson
