Rainy Forecast

Yeah, we can play

The weatherman managed to foul this one up but in a good way.  The forecast was for a rainy morning but it turned out beautifully even though it might have kept a few of you away. It was a bit drizzly when we signed in but a few intrepid souls tried to warm up anyway.  By the time we got underway the sun actually poked through and at least partially dried the fields.

We had 48 players show up plus Fred Dampier who forgot to sign-in so 4 teams contested two games with a bit of rotation.  On the National League field (which was actually a mixed bag) Jerry Witter (Visitors) pitched against Pat Lopiccolo (Home) on Field D.

The score ended up a bit one sided with the home team posting 22 runs led by Richie Marino's 4 for 5 day and Denny Schaffer's 3 for 4 including 2 homers and a triple, a new player Don Borswicz added a 3 for 4 day and Pat Lopiccolo helped his own cause with 3 hits in 4 at bats.

On Field E we added Fred Dampier to the visitors to make a team of 13 pitched by Larry Wells against a team of 12 hurled by George Radlein.

The visitors got off to a roaring start with only Bob Hite reaching base.  The Home team replied with a 5 spot led by a Chris Constantine triple. The visitors got on the board with two runs in the second when Kirk Coffman singled ahead of a Fred Dampier homer. The Home team managed to get two runners on but failed to score.

In the third both teams went down in order and in the 4th the visitors posted 5 runs to take the lead. The Home team went down 1-2-3. In fact the Home team went down in order in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings while only posting a single run the rest of the game.  This is even more amazing when you look at their line-up.  Andrews, Schapler, Hamilton, Jacobson, Constantine, Wise, Radlein, and Nelson.  Certainly the 5 run 1st was no fluke but zeros the rest of the way?  Tom Hamilton did his part with a 3 for 4 day but fly outs to Frank Jacobs in right -center field seemed to be the order of the day not to mention a well turned DP by short-stop Don Witmer.

Final score 21-6 including the flip-flop.

For Team Wells outstanding hitting was provided by Freddy Gonzalez 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, Frank Jacobs 3 for 4 with 2 triples and a homer, Kirk Coffman 3 for 4, Fred Dampier 4 for 4 with a double and a home run, Larry Wells 3 for 4.

Praise the Lord and pass the big bats
