No power shortage in Winter Haven

Eddie had a big day, Smile ON!

With almost a million folks up north still out of power and needing help, The batters on both fields provided quite a surge. Hopefully we can bottle it and send it north.

Field C saw a very competitive game for six innings with Team Mills pulling away  in the last three innings and outscoring Team Radlein 10 to 2 during that period.  Team Mills crossed the plate with their first four batters to take the early lead The big hit coming off Dave Hartleys bat for a two run homer.Team Radlein answered with three runs off five singles. The next four innings both teams matched scores and so going into the sixth inning Team Radlein was behind by the smallest of margins; one run.

In the sixth inning things changed (perhaps it had something to do with George's early departure and replacement). Team Mills put up five runs with another Hartley homer and doubles by Coffman and Borowicz. Team Radlein was only able to score twice as a result of Eddie Sullivan's home run. The seventh inning was relatively quiet with Team Mills scoring the only run.

The eighth inning saw another five runs scored for Team Mills. Team Radlein had a one-two-three inning. The last inning started with the visiting team scoring four supported by Dave Hartley's double. Still within striking distance, Team Radlein started out with the first two runners crossing home before the defense for Team Mills shut them down. The third out was made with the bases loaded. Again final score Team Mills 27, Team Radlein 15.

Outstanding hitters were:

Dave Hartley         5 for 6 with 2 homers and a double
Vassuri Bess        5 for 5
Eddie Kline            5 for 6
Frank Miller            4 for 4 with a double
Freddie Duchan     4 for 4
Eddie Sullivan         4 for 4 with a homer and double

The three team game was played on Field B and while the outcome was never in doubt for six innings, fans were on their feet as Team Wells mounted a huge comeback in the bottom of the seventh.

The game started with Team Lopiccolo scoring five runs before the first out was made. The rally was supported by a Bob Z homer and an inning ending hit to the fence by Sam Lopez. Team Witter answered with two runs from their lead off batters Gonzalez and Andrews. Team Wells manged three runs off doubles by Jimmie Laffoon and  Nick Matta. The second inning saw Team Lopiccolo and Team Wells going out one-two-three. Team Witter scored one in their part of the inning.

The third inning saw Team Lopiccolo score five runs with home runs by Bob Z and Ron Butler along with a triple by Sam Lopez. The first two runners scored for Team Witter as Russ King hit a solid triple up the middle.Team Wells answered with two runs off sacrifice flies by Finnegan and Schapler.

The fourth inning saw Bill Bowley start another another five run rally for Team Lopiccolo. Team Witter scored once when Richie Marino reached base on a fielders choice and scored.  Team Wells had a one-two-three out inning.

In the fifth inning, solid hits by Lopiccolo, Bowley and Baker sparked the offense and resulted in another five runs for Team Lopiccolo.  Team Witter managed one run off three singles. Team Wells had a one-two-three out inning.

Then in the sixth, Team Lopiccolo was virtually shut down as Ron Butler was the only player to get around the bases. Team Witter scored four runs in the middle of the inning as their lead off hitters all managed to score. Team Wells scored three in the bottom of the inning with big hits from Don Hawbaker and Lee Baker. At the end of six the score was Team Lopiccolo 21, Team Witter 11, and Team Wells 11.

The last inning can only be described as strange and exciting at the same time. Donnie Witmer started Team Lopiccolo out with a solid double and started a rally that looked like it might be an inning of epic proportion. Unfortunately after four quick runs the machine shut down. Then Team Witter had another one-two-three inning and had to take the field to try holding Team Wells to zero runs in order to manage a tie. Alas there was no tie and Team Lopiccolo had to sit by and watch an absolutely fantastic offensive display by Team Wells as they sent up  thirteen batters in the unlimited final inning. They scored nine runs before the first out was made. Team Wells ran up ten runs for the inning.

Final score for the game was Team Lopicolo 25, Team Wells 21, and Team Witter 11.
