Tuesday 7 October

The snowbirds are starting to return and so our numbers are beginning to grow accordingly. Today 53 players came out and we managed to get in one two team game and one three team game. The two team game was primarily American Leaguers and the three team game was a good mix of the National and American Leagues. Hopefully Friday we will break the sixty barrier and expand to three fields which would be great.

Before the recaps of the games let me mention a few administrative things:

1. The deadline for early registration ($30) is the 15th. Not only does it save you money, it helps in knowing the number of uniforms to order for the upcoming year. That order will go in on the 17th.

2. I need your help in getting the games started on time. First everyone needs to sign in or call before 0830. It takes a full half hour to make the lineups and with folks straggling in as late as ten minutes to the hour it is impossible. Last week because of the late arrivals we had to play a three team game with thirteen players on a team instead of  two two team games. The second part of starting on time is completing batting practice in a timely manner. Please divide yourself among the fields in use. Normally National Leaguers should go to one, and the American Leaguers on the other. Lastly, try and limit the number of swings so that everyone gets a chance.

3. Lastly, The ENJOYMENT BOOKS go on sale Friday. They are $30 and fund almost 40% of our operating budget. Please buy one for yourself and another for a family member or friend.

Freddy Gonzalez managed the visitors. His lineup included himself, Hamilton, Keller, Finnegan, Witmer, Coffman, Dampier, Pepin, Davis, and Hartley. With that lineup one would think the outcome was in the bag, especially as they scored four runs in the first inning. Don Kellers triple netted them another two in the second. Unfortunately that was it until the sixth.

The Home team was managed by Gerry DeRidder. He had an equally impressive lineup of Rivera, Scarbrough, DeRidder, Smith, Jacobson,Laffoon, Denny, Giordano, Gonzalez M, and Wells. Not to out done by Freedy's team, they managed to score five in each of the first two innings as well as one in the third and two in the fifth with.Jim Laffoon providing the only extra base hit. At the end of five the score was visitors 6 and Home 13.

This was enough to secure the victory for the Home team as the Visitors only scored five runs over the last four innings for a total of twelve. Meanwhile the Home Team continued to mount up the runs. They scored five in the sixth and three more in the eigth. Final score was Visitors 12 and Home Team 21.

The Hitting Team was managed by Steve Hill, and included the following players: Reagan, Benson, Jacobs, Hill, Kallister, LoPiccillo, Moots, MacPartlan, Merritt, Bowley, and G Baker. They put up three quick runs in the first and third innings to take a solid lead. They were unable to score again until the fifth inning when they tallied five runs to tie the Fieding Team.

The Sitting Team led by Jeff Simon had Simon, Constantine, Zelazny, Powell, Torres, Barnes, Miller, Burns, Bess, L Baker, and Bloom. Not scoring prolifically in the first two innings they found themselves in a deep hole. They managed four in the third but were still trailing the other teams. They scored another three in the fifth but still found themselves in third place.

The Fielding Team was managed by Bob Hite who had a great lineup consisting of Schapler, Thompson, Lopez, Poke, Hite, Hill D, Marino, Mohan, Ayayla, Strait, and Leggett. They failed to score in the first as the top of the line up sputtered. The next three innings were a different story as they tallied four, two, and five respectfully to tie up the game with the Hitting Team. At the end of five, the score was Hit 11, Sit 8, and Field 11.

The fifth saw the game close up as the Hitting Team failed to score a run while the Sitting Team erupted for five runs on eight singles to reach 13 runs total. The Fielding Team responded by getting their first two runners on base and getting them all the way to home. The third out with the bases loaded ended the rally. The score at the end of six was Hit 11, Sit 13, and Field 13.  The last inning was over before it even got going as the Hitting Team was the only team to score and just enough to take the lead. The final score was Hit Team 14, Sit Team 13, and Fielding Team 13.
