1/18 Field D Flyers v. Post 8

The game was scheduled for Field A but was ‘Flexed’ to Field D.  Both teams played well defensively with the home team Post 8 being led by MacDonald, Knox, King, Gisele Seguin and Lopez. The Flyers’ defense was anchored by Vanderhyde, Hite, Hunter, Grabb, Fryzowicz and Dudley. The defense kept the game close for 8 innings, with no team able to build a safe lead.  The Flyers broke the game open in the 9^th, sending 25 men to the plate and scoring 19 runs.  Larry Wells, the winning pitcher, delivered a 3 run single during the big inning.  Final Score 32-12 Flyers.

Friday, January 18th

On the first pitch of the game Freddy Gonzales put the Warriors ahead 1-0 on a drive to deep left field . The Dukes posted a run after Ray Roys lead off triple on his way to a 4 for 4 day . 1-1 after one .

The Warriors just could not get untracked , not scoring against the Dukes good pitching by Jerry Witter and their strong defense the next 5 innings . Meanwhile the Dukes bats were hot posting 18 runs through 6 innings .  Their big hits were home runs by Ray Roy and Steve Hill plus 3 baggers by Bill Wolfe and Willie Morton .

The Warriors got hot in the 7th , scoring 5 runs to trim the Dukes lead to 18-6 . Key hitters were Art Zakrowski ,Don Hawbaker and a long triple by Bob Vandenberg . The Dukes answered with 4 in the bottom of the inning . 

The Warriors were not going quietly . adding 6 runs the 8th while holding the Dukes scoreless . The Warriors big hits were provided on doubles by Don Scarbrough and Jeff Simon , another triple by Vandenberg and a home run by Jim Vining . 22-12 Dukes at 8 .

After the Dukes Willie Morton marched in from the left field bullpen to pitch the 9th , the Warriors managed only one more run in the inning . FINAL SCORE 22-13 Dukes .

The Braves vs The Cobras

The Braves jumped out in the top of the 1st inning scoring 4 runs. In the bottom of the 1st the Cobras answered with I run. The Cobras inched their way closer to closing the gap with 2 runs in the bottom of the 2ndwith a score: 4 to 3. In the 3rd inning The Braves got hot and scored another 4 runs. The Cobras came out swinging and evened up the score with 5 runs making the game tied at 8 to 8. That didn’t stop Strait’s Braves from coming out with 5 runs in the 5th with a come back of 1 run by Capozzi’s Cobras with a 5th inning score of 13 to 9. In the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings the Braves fired 3 consecutive bullets scoring 3 runs. The Cobras fired 3 consecutive blanks coming up short. No change in the 9th inning. Final score: Braves 16 Cobra’s 9

Post 8 vs Cobra’s

King’s Post 8 team came out of the gate with two single hits from Steve Pinnick & Sam Lopez followed by Bobby Reagan’s home run; scoring 3 runs in the top of the 1^st. The Cobras answered by scoring 1 run. In the third inning the bats were hot for both teams. 5 runs for the King’s Post 8 followed by 7 runs from Capozzi’s Cobras, tying the score at 8 to 8. Post 8 was still alive in the 5^th  and proved it by scoring 4 runs which gave them the lead. The Cobras were dormant until the bottom of the 8^th when they put some pep in their step to score 5 runs and take back the lead. King’s Post 8 team went down in order in the top of the ninth coming up short with the runs needed.      Final score Post 8: 12     Cobra’s :13.

The American "flex" league had a tremendous 3 team game between Greg Denny, Tom Hamilton, and Don Keller.  After the first several innings,  all three teams were tied at 9 runs apiece.  At the end of 6 the score was Hamilton 18, Keller 16, and Denny 15.  In the 7th inning Keller scored 2 runs, Denny scored 4 runs, and Hamilton scored 0 for a final score of 19 Denny, 18 Hamilton and Keller 18.  Congrats to Greg's Team.  Teams were evenly matched with many fine defensive plays.  Hitting kudos belong to Dave Doerbaum who cleared the fence with 2 bombs.

Tuesday, January 15th

The Braves led off the 1st inning scoring with 2 runs on a triple by Joe Peskie. The Dukes answered with Steve Hill's 3 run homer. Score 3-2 Dukes after one.

After the Dukes plated one on Bill Wolfe's 3 bagger in the 2nd they extended their lead 4-2. The Braves posted 2 more runs in the top of the 3rd on 4 singles to tie the score at 4. The Dukes posted 3 runs after 2 outs to retake the lead 7-4 in the bottom of the inning, the key hits were provided by Hill and Bob Zelazny on back to back hits. Score 7-4 Dukes after 3.

The Braves made it close, adding 2 in the 5th on hits by Joe Letourneau, Leo Kreiger and Don Torok, 7-6 Dukes. The Dukes posted 2 of their own on singles by new player Alf Gibbons, Jerry Remington and Ken Gelinas. Dukes 9-6 after 4.

Defense took over the next few innings, the Braves added single runs in the 5th and 6 innings while the Dukes got one run . End of the 7th saw the Dukes holding on to a 7 to 10 lead.

The Braves bats came alive in the 8th, putting up a 4 spot, the power provided on Peskie's 3 run right HR blast, to take a one run lead 11-10. The Dukes tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Score 11-11 going to the 9th.

The Braves added 4 more runs in the top of the 9th, the key hit was Torok's 2 run triple to the right field corner. The Dukes bats remained quiet and did not score. Final score Braves 15 Dukes 11.

Tuesday, January 15th
The American League flexed into four teams today for the first time this season. We have had a two team game, a three team game and now a four team game. Hopefully, we can have more four team games in the future.

On Field C,  Al Guzzo's home team  matched up against Jeff Stier's visiting team for a close game all the way to the end. The lead changed several times during the game and at the end of eight innings, Guzzo's team was ahead by three runs. Stier's team came up with the top of their lineup and Guzzo knew he was in trouble. After getting two outs, Dave Doerbaum came up with a runner on base and sent a bomb over the center field fence to cut Guzzo's lead to one run. The final out came with the go ahead runs on the bases for a final score of 21-20.

On Field E, Tommy Hamilton's team matched up against Larry Book's team. It was a great day for hitting.  Game started out with Hamilton's team scoring 13 and Book's team posting 12 after 3 innings.  The game tightened up in the middle innings with some great plays by Hamilton, Schultees,Rad, Guzman,Quinones, and Netzel.  After 6 innings the score was 17-16 in favor of Hamilton.  Book's boys clinched the game by scoring 10  runs in the 7th and 8th innings while holding Tommy's  guys to just 1 run.  Final score was 26-18 Book.  Fun game to play in and good sportmanship from both squads.

Fabian's Flyers vs Powell's Warriors
The Flyers got off to a flying start by scoring 5 runs in the first inning.

Warriors scored 2 runs in the bottom of the inning. They tied the game at 5 each in the bottom of the second inning. The Flyers scored 4 in the third to take the lead and continued to score runs in every inning but the ninth. The Warriors tried to catch up by scoring 6 runs in the eighth inning and added one more in the ninth, but it was too little to late.

Final score was Flyers 21-Warriors 17.

Larry Wells was the winning pitcher.

Powell’s Warriors vs the Capozzi's Cobra’s on field B (not A) might have ended up different is the sun was not in everyone’s eyes!

The Warriors started by scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning. The Cobra’s reply was with 1 run. The 2nd inning was a reversal of the 1st with the Warriors getting 1 run to the Cobra’s 2 runs.  Both teams woke up in the 3rd inning with 3 runs each, making the game tied at 6 to 6. The Warriors drew a blank in the 4th allowing the Cobras’ to gain the lead by 3.  The 5th inning was hot for the Warriors’ with them putting 5 runs across the plate.  The Cobra’s answered with 2 runs which tied the game in the 5th inning 11 to 11.

The Warriors ran out of gas in the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th inning, scoring no runs.  The Cobras’ capitalized in the 6th inning with 2 runs and the 8th inning with 3 runs. The final score was Warriors 11 and Cobra’s 16.

Friday, January 11th

1/11 Field E Duke’s v. Flyers

Both Teams came out hot!  The Duke’s score 4 in first with singles from Roy, Hartley, Schapeler and a 2-run double by Morton.  The Flyers answered with 5 runs: a double by Boswell, then 2 quick outs, before a single from Levesque, a home run from Vanderhyde, doubles from Hite and Fryzowicz and single from Gelpin to score the 5^th run. The Dukes then got 8 over the next 3 innings with the top of the order doing most of the damage to take a 12-7 lead after 4.

The Flyers defense stymied the Dukes offense over the next 4 innings, yielding just 4 singles with only 1 runner advancing beyond 1^st base.  Grabb and Benson in the outfield led the defense.  The Dukes defense was pretty good, also.  Giving up just 2 more runs until the 7^th, when each hitter that came to the plate got a hit:  Benson, Dudley, Smith, Boswell, Wells, Grabb, and Levesque with Benson’s triple and Boswell’s homerun doing the most damage. 

The Dukes tied the score at 14 in their half of the 9^th and then after reaching on a fielder’s choice Boswell score from first on a long hit by the winning pitcher Wells.
