Super Bowl Edition

February 3, A’s (Matta)-Yankees (Toro). OK, the Super Bowl is right around the corner.  I will write up today’s game between these two fine softball teams, by referring to football terms and I will throw in some Super Bowl trivia. See if you can get the answers to the trivia questions, the answers will be posted at the end of this article.

In football terms the A’s scored a safety (2), an extra point (1) and a safety (2), in the first three innings of the game. While in football jargon, the Yankees had to punt in each of the first three innings.

After 3 innings the score was A’s 5-Yankees 0.

What was the lowest scoring Super Bowl? (multiple choice).

Cowboys vs. Bills, Dolphins vs. Redskins, Steelers vs. Vikings, or, Jets vs. Colts.

The Yankees came alive in the 4th inning, or just before half time, they kicked a FG in that inning, scoring 3 runs. Constantine, Rivera, Doerbaum and the power running back from Green Bay, Held, all had big hits. Held smacked a triple. Still, the A’s held the lead 9-3, after 4 innings of play.

Which RB has the longest run for a TD in the Super Bowl? (multiple choice).

Willie Parker, Marcus Allen, Franco Harris, Don Held, or, Tony Dorsett.

The A’s continued to win almost every inning in this game, winning 7, of the 9 innings played. But we all know winning innings is not the same as winning a game. You can throw one long TD pass and it can put you right in the thick of things. Being down 2TD’s to a FG, 14-3,  the Yankees were hurting.. In the 6th inning they threw a long pass for a TD and made a 2 point conversion, to make the game close. They scored eight runs with big hits from just about everyone in their lineup, Wells got the ball rolling with a single, Constantine tripled, Rivera, Ojeda, Doerbaum and Held all singled. Bobby Z was like Super Bowl QB, Terry Bradshaw. Bobby threw the long pass that kept the rally going strong, when he hit a HR. Toro then hit a double and so did Jiminez, Pinnick added a single. When you looked at the scoreboard at the end of the 6th inning, it was A’s 14- Yankees 11.

Who are the 2 QB’s, who won a Heisman Trophy in college and also won a Super Bowl in their careers?

The A’s knew they were in a tough game and answered back, with a  five run 7th.  Carpenter, Goose, Stier, Shirer, Quinones and Essenmacher all had hits that contributed to the inning. The Yankees added three in the bottom of the 7th. They shut the A’s out in the 8th and added another three runs in the bottom of the 8th.  The score was A’s 19- Yankees 17, after 8 innings of play.  This set up a dramatic 4th quarter, or in this case 9th inning.

Trick question, which Super Bowl winning QB has beaten every team in the NFL at least once, in his NFL career? (multiple choice). Tom Brady, Payton Manning, or Brett Farve.

The A’s needed to score to keep the Yankees from taking the game. They also needed a goal line stand in the bottom of the 9th to win. They got both things they needed. Matta, Goose, Stier, Shirer, Quinones and Book all had hits in the 9th, the A’s added 4 runs to their total. The Yankees came back with a FG (3), but what they really needed was a TD (6). The final score was A’s 23-Yankees 20.

Notes: Goose had six hits in the game and scored 5 times. Shirer had 5 hits in the game and scored 5 times, Matta had 3 hits in the game and scored 3 times. Carpenter and 4 hits in the game and scored 3 times. Doerbaum had 5 hits in the game and scored 4 times. Held had two triples and knocked in many runs, but did not score after either triple. Good defensive plays by Goose, Whitmer, Crowell and Zelazny.

Trivia Answers:

1.     Miami Dolphins 14- Redskins 7, was the lowest scoring game.
2.     Roger Staubach (1963) and Jim Plunkett (1970) won two Super Bowls apiece after winning the Heisman Trophy in college (Heisman years are list above).
3.     Willie Parker of the Pittsburgh Steelers had a 75-yard TD in Super Bowl XL playing the Seattle Seahawks. This run broke the previous record of 74 yards by Marcus Allen of the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII playing the Washington Redskins.
4.     All three QB’s is the correct answer. Brady has beaten every team except, obviously, the Patriots. Brett Favre and Peyton Manning are the only two quarterbacks to have beaten all 32 teams.
