A spring training
game took place on Field E. Larry Powell
and Don LaMay were the team managers with teams made up mostly of player they
selected in the league draft. Powell’s
team took the field with Fulton, Marino, Steve Hill, Schapeler, Goreth,
Remington, Powell, Wheeler, Augenstein, Strait and Gibson. LaMay’s team batted
in this order. Taylor, Guspyt, Miller, Andrews, King, Zakrowski, Jones, Moots,
Waddell, Welton and Lee Baker. After the
first two batter were out on good fielding plays by Powell’s team, Miller,
Andrews, King, Zakrowski singled new player Derek Jones ended the inning with a
3 run home run and the fifth run of the inning.
Fulton led off with a base hit, Marino reach first also and Hill walked
and Schapeler doubled and new player Goreth drove in run three for the home
team. At the end of 1st Visitors 5 Home 3.
Both teams had goose eggs in the second.
Third inning had both team with two runs.
After another egg
for the visitors in the fourth Powell’s team tallied a run to close the gap on
hits from Wheeler, Strait and Gibson. In
the fifth the bats came alive again.
Taylor singled, Guspyt doubled, Miller singled, and a triple from
Andrews. Zakrowski singled Al in and
LaMay’s team scored 4 run to take the lead 11 to 6. However, Steve Hill starts the last of the
5th with a single and Schapeler, Remington,
Powell, and Wheeler do the same, and Gibson finished off the inning with a base
rap to score the 5th run of the inning and tying
the game at 11.
Another zero for the
visitors. Home team again adds a run
from the bottom of the batting order to take the lead. Each team tallies 2 in the 7th. Eighth had the
Visitors rally for two to take a 15 – 14 lead.
Powell’s team scored 3 and took a 17 – 15 lead into the 9th inning. Andrews
led off the 9th with a double, King singles,
scoring Andrews and the inning ended on a long fly out. Final Score Visitors 16 Home 17.
A good game and good hitting and fielding.
