Tuesday, April 25th

2 things happened in this game I have never witnessed in my many years of playing WHSS, there was a total of 12 walks between the 2 teams and all 4 pitchers had a fair share. Also, there was 8 put outs by catchers with 4 by pop fouls and 4 thrown out at the plate including the last out of the game. 2 were by Robert Spitaleri on back to back pitches.  Go figure.

The teams were managed by Spitileri and Zelazny and the Zelazny team controlled the game handily and led 20-10 after 6 innings, but the Spitaleri team chalked up 8 runs in the 7th inning but failed to score in the 8th or 9th while Zelazny team managed 3 more for a final of 23-18.  All in all it was a very well played game.

Spitaleri hitters
3 hits. Shaffer, Gonzalez, Charlie Giordano
  2 hits. Coffman, Gelesky, Learn,
              Shearer,
Zelazny hitters
  4 hits. Boswell
3 hits. Hill, Maynard w/a HR, Sam Harrell
2 hits. Boito, Muniz w/in park GRAND SLAM,
              B.J., Zelazny,  Fabian, Poke, Capozzi

For got to mention a very well umping job by our commissioner Don Witmer as he's working his way back into playing condition. Thank you Don.

What a great 3 team game managed by Bob Zelazny, Bob Hite and Steve Hill.

First the Bob Z hitters
  3 hits. Lynch, Zelazny, Castilleja
2 hits. Bill T. Boswell, Outing.
Second the Hill hitters
  4 hits. Hill, Reagan
  3 hits. Spitaleri, Capozzi, Thompson
  2hits. Maynard, Hudson, Coffman,
             Hawbaker, Poke
Next the Hite hitters
4 hits. Marino "take that sucka"
  3 hits. Damper, Letourneau, Kasparek
  2hits. Giordano, Hite, Shaffer, B.J.
             O'Callaghan,  Boito
What an exciting ending from the umpires view which was Fabian. Going to the open inning the score was Bob Z 6, Hill 16 and Hite 16. Please note that Bob Hite and Don Lamay were playing their last game till the Fall as they're heading North over the weekend. The Zelazny team came up first and managed to score 2 runs for a total of 8. Then the Hill team came up and did score 1 run which would be the winner if they can hold the Hite team. The Hite team got Boito on 3rd and Marino on first with a FC and a single. Our senior statesman, Don Lamay steps to the plate and grounds out, BUT it scores the tying run with 2 outs. Damper steps up and singles to put the winning run on second. Joe Letourneau says to me, stepping into the box "hope I walk" 😆 Well he nearly did as the count got 3-1 before a good looking pitch came he couldn't resist and smacked it to right center to score the winning run.
Final of Team Hite 18, Team Hill 17 and Team Zelazny 8. Great game guys and its good to be back from windy Oklahoma.

 GAME TIME CHANGES

Effective this Friday, April 22nd, we will start our summer hours. You need to be at the ballpark no later than 8:30 AM and we will try to start the games at 9:00 AM.

American League recap 2022

I wanted to take a few minutes to bring everyone up to date on what’s been going on in the American League.

First, I want to thank all of the snowbirds. It was a pleasure sharing the field with all of these great players. While some have already headed back up north, we still have a few players enjoying our Florida weather for a while longer. I’d like to recognize our snowbirds:

Tommy Hamilton, Lonnie Netzel, JD Davis, Bradley Scheirer, Doug McKinney, Al Guzzo, Lenny DeBroeck, Bob Schultheis, Frank Deluca, Jeff Stier, Scott Sequin, and Rob Reed.

Safe travels, my friends.

Now to the games.

On Tuesday, April 12, the Blue and Red teams took on the crew out of Kissimmee. Right from the start, Miguel Gonzalez of Kissimmee baffled the Blue team hitters, holding them to a zero while Kissimmee scored 8, but not for long. After home runs by Dave Doerbaum, Lou Guzman, Bradley Scheirer, and Manny Rios, the Blue team won 16-12.

Game two was no different. The Red team came out hammering, beating the Kissimmee team 22-9.

On Sunday, April 16, the Winter Haven team (aka Blue Knights) went to Seminole county to take on the Senior team from Deltona. This wasn’t much of a battle as the Knights won 16-0 and 15-6. In game one, BJ Kallister pitched a gem.

Tuesday, April 19, the Red and Blue teams took on the sluggers from Sebring. Game one was a battle. At the end of the 6th, we were up 6-5. Sebring came back to tie the game in the top of the 7th. Finally, the Red team scored a walk off winning hit to win 6-7. In game two, the Blue team scored 0, 2,3,4,0,2,5, winning 16-7. There were some defensive plays by Al Guzzo, Lonnie Netzel, and Lou Guzman.

We look forward to playing the bombers of Solivita on Thursday, April 28, at Solivita.

I’d like to thank the managers from Kissimmee, Sebring, and Solivita for working with us to set up these games.

Luis Guzman, Blue team manager; JD Davis, Red team manager.
