Post President's Day

Tigers vs. Rangers, Game 1, Servicemaster Field.

These are the top 10 Rollercoasters in the USA, according to Time Tech.

1. Millennium Force, Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio)
 2. Bizarro, Six Flags New England (Agawam, Massachusetts)
 3. Nitro, Six Flags Great Adventure (Jackson, New Jersey)
 4. Top Thrill Dragster, Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio)
 5. The Voyage, Holiday World (Santa Claus, Indiana)
 6. El Toro, Six Flags Great Adventure (Jackson, New Jersey)
 7. Intimidator 305, Kings Dominion (Doswell, Virginia)
 8. Apollo’s Chariot, Busch Gardens Williamsburg (Williamsburg, Virginia)
 9. New Texas Giant, Six Flags Over Texas (Arlington, Texas)
 10. Intimidator, Carowinds (Charlotte, North Carolina)

I am going to add two more roller coasters to the “Time” list; they will now include Tuesday’s Tigers - Rangers games, 1 & 2. Both games had their ups, downs and big bends. The drops (a good play on words here) left you thrilled, dizzy, and maybe nauseous at times.  Here is a shout out to Tigers boss, Tommy Hamilton, “don’t go drinking all the Pepto Bismol, save some for Rangers manager, Nick Matta.”  Between dropped balls and close plays, both managers could use some of the pink stuff, or even something stronger.

Getting back to the coasters, I like the name of the #6 roller coaster on the “Time” list, El Toro.  Of course, the Rangers have their own version of El Toro, Juan (El) Toro. He is fast, smooth and dangerous with the bat, arm and glove. Juan proved to be a great playmaker by getting four hits in game 1; three of those hits were doubles.  Juan had two fantastic catches in left center field on the day, coming in a long way, in a hurry, for a pair of short fly balls.  He also threw a runner out at first base, after catching one of those dying quails, in game 2.  Juan was not the only player to put on a clinic.  Les Jacobson, Kirk Coffman and Ron Butler also flashed the leather for the Rangers. Les made 3 big plays at first base; Ron covered right field with the speed of the Millennium Force, Kirk went way back to haul in some deep fly balls.  Both pitchers, Steve Pinnick and Nick Matta tossed strong games, as is evidenced by the low final score.  Jack Benson had several nice catches for the Tigers, as did Mike Wiltshire.

Let’s take a closer look at the scoring, because that’s where the real rollercoaster ride took place.

The Tigers had the following numbers :                   2-0-3-4-0-3-1 in their seven innings.
The Rangers countered with these numbers:         1-2-3-2-1-0-wow, in their seven innings.

The "wow" is what coaster enthusiasts might call the grand finale, the double dipper which lifts you out of your seat.

Looking at the score you can see that the Tigers had the Rangers under their paw, going into the bottom of the 7th, they led 13-9. Wells, Matta and Coffman started off the bottom of the inning, with 3 straight singles. Toro then doubled, to drive in Matta and Wells. Zelazny then tied the game with a single to right, driving in Coffman and Toro. The next two batters were retired, making it two outs for the Rangers, with Les Jacobson now running at first.  Jim Laffoon then came up and singled Les to second.  It was all up to Chris Constantine to catapult the winning run home. Chis drilled the ball into right field and Les zipped around the bases to score the game winner.

“Tommy, I won’t hold it against you if you go ahead and finish that bottle of Pepto.”

Final Score: Tigers 13 – Rangers 14.

Game 2

The rollercoaster ride continued in game 2, this time the drops were deeper and the curves faster, because there was more scoring. We still had the usual suspects from game 1 showing up big on defense; Jacobson, Butler Coffman, Benson and Wilshire all had solid games. A few more guys decided to get in on the defensive action in game 2, King, Dampier, Laffoon, Constantine and Ing all made big plays with their gloves.

Did you ever ride on coaster ride that pitted two coasters racing against each other, both coasters side by side, on parallel tracks? You know how it goes, your coaster zips into the lead, and then as you approach the finish line, the other coaster is speeding up and trying to overtake your ride. That is how this game rocketed down the tracks.

The Rangers took an early lead scoring 4, 4 and 5 runs in the first 3 innings.  The Tigers had one big inning, in the first, scoring 5 runs. Then like the catch-up coaster, they stayed on the heels of the Rangers, saving their sprint for the end.

After 6 innings the score was Rangers 16 – Tigers 13.

The Rangers added two big runs in the top of the 7th , when Erb and Zelazny scored, thanks to a big hit from Jim Laffoon. That placed the Ranger’s coaster 5 lengths ahead of the speeding Tiger’s coaster.

In the bottom of the 7th the Tigers roared around the tracks, or the base paths, as it were; Carpenter, Andrews, and Dampier all reached base and scored, with no outs. Bob Hite then singled for the Tigers, before the first out was recorded, in the all-important, 7th inning.  With one out, King singled Hite to third and took a pinch runner at first base; King’s runner, (Dampier), now represented the tying run.  But the train quickly ran out of track, as Jim Laffoon came in to pitch, Jim retired the next two batters. Don Ing made a nice grab on the last out, fielding a hot grounder. As we Rangers like to say, ” It don’t mean a thing, unless you have that Ing.”

In fact, go back and check that coaster list and you will see that the number 7 and the number 10 coasters are called the “Ing”timidator.  Donny is just too much player to have just one coaster named after him.

Final Score: Rangers 18 – Tigers 16.

WP: Wells.
Save: Laffoon.

Leading hitters for the Rangers:
Coffman: 4 / 4.
Toro: 3 / 4 with a double and a HR.

Hill: 3 / 4 with a double and HR.
Wells: 2 / 3.

Leading hitters for the Tigers:
Wiltshire: 2 / 3 with a double.
Hamilton: 3 / 3.
Busch: 3 / 3 with a double.
Wolfe: 2 / 2 with a double.
Poke: 2 / 3 with a triple.
Carpenter: 3 / 3 with a double.
