In old news - The St. Petersburg Pelicans get home runs from Lamar Johnson and Steve Kemp and rout the West Palm Beach Tropics, 12-4, to win the first-ever championship of the Senior Professional Baseball Association in 1990-
Gessler Clinic Field
Game 1
With a sun defused by the
fog, the Gessler Clinic Field proved to be a tough nut to crack. In the first game the Angels mauled the
Tigers 14-2. Both teams supplied good
pitching and steady defense but the Angels grouped their hits together to score
runs in bunches. The Halos had 20 hits
for the game, but only 2 for extra bases.
The Tigers could only manage 10 hits, all singles.
Top Hitters:
Tigers:
Russ King 2 for 2
Poke Rodriguez 2 for 2
Art Zakrowski 2 for 2
Angels:
Scott Seguin 3 for 3
Ron Pepin 3 for 3
JD Davis 3 for 3
Greg Denny 2 for 2, BB
Alvin Moss 3 for 3
Game 2
With the sun high in the
sky, the temperate rising and the humidity high the second game got off to a
quick start. The Angels bats remained
hot, they got 4 hits, 1 base on balls and a sac fly to jump out to a 3 run
lead. The Tigers clawed back in the 2nd
with a base on balls and 3 singles of the own to cut the lead to 3-2, after 2
full innings.
The 3rd started
slowly for the Angels, 2 quick outs, before Freddy Gonzalez lined a double to
center. The Angels got 6 more hits,
including a 2 bagger from Seguin, to send 5 runners across the plate. It looked like the Tigers might fold, but
with 2 outs and 2 on, they clawed their way back into the game. They got 5 straight hits, doubles by Giordano
and Wiltshire, to tie the high flying Angels 8-8 at the end of 3 innings.
In the 5th the Angels attempted to
run away with the game again, using 5 hits (double by Seguin and triple by
Moss), a base on balls and 2 SAC flys to post 5 runs. The Tigers could manage only 1 run in the
bottom of the inning, which left the Angels leading by 4. Good defense by the Tigers kept the Angels
from scoring in the 6th, but it didn’t look like the Tigers would
cut that lead when the Angels outfielders robbed the first 2 Tiger hitters of
extra bases. But, 5 hits, including a
double by Hite, plated 4 and tie the game at the end of 6.
The Angels went out quickly in the top of the
7th, meaning the Tigers only needed to score 1 to win the game. The Tigers had the winning run aboard but
couldn’t push it across. So, the stage
was set for the Angels to steal another victory, and it looked like they might
after they got the first 2 runners on base. But, 3 ground balls produced 1 run
and 3 outs. Now, the Tigers needed 1 to
tie and 2 to win. With runners on 1st
and 2nd and 2 outs, Mike Wiltshire singled to left to plate a run
and tie the game. That’s the way the
game ended, final score Angels 15 and Tigers 15.

Game 1
When the
Rays played the Rangers, in game one of today’s doubleheader, it reminded me at
first blush of this year’s Super Bowl. The Rays made a few mistakes and had a
few bad breaks that allowed the Rangers to jump to a strong 15-2 lead, by the
end of the 4th inning.
In the 5th
inning the Rays began to shine. They scored 5 runs off the bats of Brock,
Levesque, Herb O, Ota and Reagen. It just was not enough to overtake the
Rangers, who played excellent defense on the day. The Rangers added to their
lead in the 5th and 6th innings, scoring 5 more runs in
their last two frames. The win and the day was extra special for Rangers manager, Nick
Matta, because it came on his youngest daughter’s birthday; Rachel turned 7
today. Happy Birthday sweetie!
The Final
score was Rangers 20 - Rays 8
Josh Wells was the winning pitcher

Florida weather has returned. A beautiful day for a ball game, but
only one team showed up to play (The Braves). The other team (The
Cubs) were there. The Braves came out swinging in the first, Gonzales led
off with a double, Waddell singled him home. After a fielders choice,
Shaffer drove in two more runs and the Braves were up by 3. Peterson led
off for the Cubs with a base hit but was left on first as the next 3
batters were out on hard hit balls.
There was no scoring in the 2nd as both teams went
down 1-2-3. The Cubs batting in the 3rd, led off with a Mohan triple. Then singles by DePalma and Michalski drove in the only run of the game for the
Cubs. The Braves pulled off 3 double plays in this game.
The Braves
sewed up the game by scoring 3 runs in the 4th with a homer by Macko,
singles by Gonzales, and Waddell. The 5th brought two more runs on hits
by
Lautenschlager, Schapeler, Witter and Burrell.
Final Score Braves 8
and the Cubs 1. Both teams have been scoring lots of run in recent
games but not today.
Game two
Game 2 was more of the same. Cubs had hits by Thompson and
Mahon but were unable to get either too the home plate. The lead off
hitter for the Braves, Penny Pelletier led off with a single Waddell and
Gonsalaz followed with hits. After a long fly out Burrell and Schapler
drove in the 5th run of the inning.
The Braves scored two more runs in the second.
Then 5 more in the 3rd on Dave Podbielski, Joe Lyons and Penny singles
and were
moved around the bases on an error, a fly out and a base hit by
Burrell.
Two more runs scored in the Braves 4th and 5 more in the 5th with a
Grand Slam by Gonzales. UP 19 - zip, the flip flop was in effect and the Cubs were shut out.
Hitting for the Braves
Game 1
Homer for Milo
Game 2
Penny 3 for 3
Gonzales 2 for 3 with Grans Slam
Hitting for the Cubs
Game 1

Game 2
