Tuesday, June 13th
This will be my last write for a while as I'm heading to MN for a class reunion. Fields B and C were under construction today so a three team game with 36 players was played on Field D. The Hit and Field Teams stayed close the whole game while the Sit Team struggled to stay in the game because everything they hit went right to a defensive player. After 6 innings, the score was 12-4-12. Zelazny's Hit team started out hot in the top of the seventh inning but an interference call at second base put out the flame. They managed to take the lead by scoring one run. Thompson's Field team started the bottom of the 7th inning with the top of their lineup. The first batter flew out to center field. The second batter, Donnie Scarbrough drove a single to left field. The third batter, Dave Shirer hit a double and moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd base. The fourth batter, Don Witmer, was intentionally walked by the pitcher, Willie Morton, which set the stage for a bases loaded double by Ralph Boswell to win the game.

Final score was Thompson 13, Strait 6 and Zelazny 12.

Write up by L. Fabian and Don Witmer.

The interference call at second base was the difference in this game. Let me remind everyone again, we have a slide or peel off rule in Winter Haven. The runner going to second base interfered with the second baseman trying to make a play at first base. According to the 2017 ISA Slow Pitch Playing Rules, which we use in Winter Haven, the definition of Interference is - the act of an offensive player/team that impedes or hinders the defensive player from executing a play on the ball and or the runner. The effect is - The ball is declared dead and the runner closest to home plate is declared out. Calling the player out that is closest to home is a pretty steep penalty that can be avoided if everyone will slide or peel off when running the bases.
