Friday 30 June Write Up

We had a game as good as the weather today. We also had a pleasant surprise as Don Held, Larry Book, and Donnie Witmer all showed up to play. Seems the tournament in Marietta Ga got rained out. It was great to have them play, especially Don Held since we did not expect to see him until fall. Now to the game.

To say it was close is an understatement. In keeping with the last three games, there was only one run separating all the teams going into the last inning. More about that later.

The Zebras were solid in the field and at the plate. The lineup had Laffoon, Witmer, Held, Zelazny, Freddy G, Marino, Accetta, BJ, and Gene Baker. They scored twice in the first inning and held the lead through four despite only scoring one more run during that period. It took Ralph Boswell's team of Herbie O, Chrest, Shirer, Scarborough, Morton, Wells, Ralph, Lee Baker, DeRidder, and Ray Johnson (who played his first game today) four innings to catch the Zebras. The Kings were ably managed by Russ as he did a great job in getting the most out of his players. The team of Pete, Frank Jacobs (back from his California trip), Book, Crowell, Russ, Norm , Strait, Castillo, Bess, and Merritt trailed up to the fourth when they put up three runs to take the lead. Scoring three more in the  fifth they extended their lead and never looked back.

With one of the lowest scoring games I can remember, it was over so fast that Sally did not finish one chapter in her book, Betty never finished her drink, and Pat Merritt did not even have to put on sun screen.
Bob Hite and his wife stopped by while recovering from knee replacement and great to see him on the mend.
Final score was Team Zebra six,Team Boswell five, and Team King eight.

Key performers included:

Frank Jacobs     3 for 4
Russ King          3 for 3 with an almost triple
Jim Laffoon         3 for 4
Donnie Witmer    4 for 4
Dave Shirer         4 for 4 with a triple
Ralph Boswell     4 for 4

Reminder that it is getting warmer. The water jug will be out at each game so bring something to put the water in.

This will be my last write for a while as I'm heading to MN for a class reunion. Fields B and C were under construction today so a three team game with 36 players was played on Field D. The Hit and Field Teams stayed close the whole game while the Sit Team struggled to stay in the game because everything they hit went right to a defensive player. After 6 innings, the score was 12-4-12. Zelazny's Hit team started out hot in the top of the seventh inning but an interference call at second base put out the flame. They managed to take the lead by scoring one run. Thompson's Field team started the bottom of the 7th inning with the top of their lineup. The first batter flew out to center field. The second batter, Donnie Scarbrough drove a single to left field. The third batter, Dave Shirer hit a double and moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd base. The fourth batter, Don Witmer, was intentionally walked by the pitcher, Willie Morton, which set the stage for a bases loaded double by Ralph Boswell to win the game.

Final score was Thompson 13, Strait 6 and Zelazny 12.

The interference call at second base was the difference in this game. Let me remind everyone again, we have a slide or peel off rule in Winter Haven. The runner going to second base interfered with the second baseman trying to make a play at first base. According to the 2017 ISA Slow Pitch Playing Rules, which we use in Winter Haven, the definition of Interference is - the act of an offensive player/team that impedes or hinders the defensive player from executing a play on the ball and or the runner. The effect is - The ball is declared dead and the runner closest to home plate is declared out. Calling the player out that is closest to home is a pretty steep penalty that can be avoided if everyone will slide or peel off when running the bases.

Friday June 9th,
Another nicely played 3 team game with 13 players on each team. We better get used to them for a while as this is the part of the year we are in. Good news is they're being fun and close.
Final was Gonzalez 16, Thompson 12 and Zelazny 12. Bobby Z was down big time going into the 6th but hiked up their boots and scored 6 with no outs to tie it all up at 12-12-12 going into the 7th inning open frame. The only team that could score in the 7th was Freddy G's putting up 4 runs from an "in the park grand slam" by Bobby Reagen for the final score 16-12-12.

Gonzales hitters. Angel  4-4, Finnegan 3-4, Reagan 3-4 w/HR, King 4-4 and Herbie 2-3.

Thompson hitters. Skid more 2-3 w/HR, Rad 2-3, Crowell 3-3, Book 3-3, Hicks 2-3, Thompson 2-3 and Hawbaker 2-3.

Bobby Z hitters. Aufiro 3-4, Shirer 3-3, Zelazny 2-3, Morton 3-3, Vandeburg 2-3 w/ 3b.

Let me take the time to remind everyone that sign in time is 8:30 AM. If you can not be there by
8:30 AM, call a Board member and let him know you will be late. The Board members phone numbers are on the web site.

Thirty six ball players showed up today to play what turned out to be one heck of a three team game. I'm not sure who the managers were as I was doing the umpiring so I'll say the teams were Strait's Smashers, Simon's Sluggers and Thompson's Blazers. After 3 innings it was 3-6-0 as Thompson put up goose eggs in the first 3 innings while Simon was scoring in every inning and Strait put up their crooked 3 in the 2nd. Then it got interesting as Strait got 1 in the 4th and 6 in the 6th for a total of 10. Simon got 3 in the 4th and 1 in the 7th for a total of 10. Well Thompson's woke up in the 4th, scoring 5 and scoring 5 again in the 5th with the same 5 hitters at the top of the order scored all 10 of the runs. Boswell, Witmer, Shirer, DeRidder and Pete with Book breaking out of his 2 week mini hitting slump by driving in Pete on a booming double with the tying run. All tied at 10-10--10 with Thompson's team coming up in the bottom of the open frame. Simon's team got the first 2 outs but then Boswell and Witmer got back to back singles then Shirer stepped up with another booming blast to the fence for a walk off double. Great game.

On Field C, the National League fielded 26 players, 13 per team, to play one close ball game.
Now, on to one of the most fantastic National League games played. Back and forth the whole game between Strait's Sluggers and Fabian's Flyers. It was tied 3 times and the lead changed hands 3 times. It came down to the top of the 9th with Fabe's up 9-8 and just had to hold the Sluggers but couldn't as Hite, Pete and Freddy Gonzalez all scored to take a 2 run lead to the bottom of the  9th. CAN THEY HOLD THEM?  Nope. Schapeler scored to bring it within 1 run and with Laffoon on second they used some strategy and had Junior Ortiz pinch run for him which paid off as he was driven in for the tying run. With Fred Dampier on 2nd representing the winning run, there were 2 fly outs  but then winning pitcher Pat Lopiccolo stepped to the plate, drove one down the left field line and Dampier beat the throw to the plate by a step for the winning run.

Final.   Fabian 13
           Strait 12

It was a fantastic game. Fans in the stands will attest to that. Natalie, Pat, Melanie and Sally.

Junior Ortiz had a fantastic game at 2nd base making at least 1/3 or more of the put outs, assists as well as 3 double plays. Way to go Junior. They were starting to say hit it anywhere but at Junior as the opposing team says always about Jimmy Laffoon.

On Field B, the American League fielded 22 players, which included borrowing  several players from the National League in order to have 11 players per team. One of those players was Ralph Boswell. Ralph is always hesitant to play in the American League but he showed everyone today that he can play there. In the first inning, he fielded a hot ground ball off the bat of Doug Hapeman for the first out of the inning and snagged a hot line drive off the bat of Dave Shipley for the second out of the inning. Ralph made numerous plays at first base for the rest of the game but it was the strong hitting of the visiting team that allowed them to outscore the home team by 12 runs.
