 HALL OF FAME BANQUET TICKETS

THIS IS THE LAST WEEK TO PURCHASE TICKETS FOR THE HALL OF FAME BANQUET. PLEASE STEP UP AND BUY A TICKET TO SUPPORT OUR INDUCTEES INTO THE POLK COUNTY SENIOR SOFTBALL HALL OF FAME. OUR INDUCTEES ARE: TOMMY HAMILTON AND STEVE HILL FROM WINTER HAVEN AND REGIS FINNEGAN AND MARTY MARTINEZ FROM LAKELAND. SEE DON WITMER FOR TICKETS IN POINCIANA.

Friday, February 24th - Poinciana

Simply a great turn out at Poinciana where WHSS will be playing for the next 5 weeks. Even though many of the players were playing in the Polk Senior Games at 8 AM the following day as WHSS had 4 teams in the senior games. Bob Hite, Wally Wallace, Jim Reed and myself also volunteered to do some of the umping. I know our American League team were Champs 🏆 of their division and 2 of our other teams were still in it battling in the final 4 of their brackets.

The Friday game teams were led by Bob Hite and Steve Hill with Hill's team coming out on top 23-20 I think. Not sure of the final from the score sheets but that's close and probably correct. I do know Rick Brock and Brad Scheirer each had 5 hits and JD and Denny Shaffer each had 4 hits.

We had two American League players that played in the National League game. The bases on the field we were playing on were only 60 ft with short infields and the fences were only 250 ft. So, the American League guys had to use ASA bats to keep from hitting the ball out of the park. We want all the American League players to know that if you show up, you can play if you want to. We will adjust the rules as necessary to keep the games safe for the older guys.

Tuesday morning, 9 AM Poinciana check in time and play some more Senior Softball.

 American League update 2/21/23

Both teams were short-handed, but Lou's Golden Eagles and JD's Deep Purple still decided to play. The game started off slowly, with each team only scoring six runs after the second inning. However, JD's Deep Purple managed to score five runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, giving them a 20-16 lead over the Golden Eagles at the end of the eighth. Deep Purple seemed to have the game in hand with a seven-run lead, but the Eagles weren't ready to give up. Dane, Lou, JR, Jeff, Rad, and Rusty all had base hits, followed by Mike Vaccaro's double and Manny's base hit. The Eagles scored seven runs with no outs, but the next three batters each made an out, resulting in a final score of 23-23. What a way to end the season! Not to mention, Don Fee hit two home runs!

We will have Pick up games at Poinciana starting Monday, March 27, 2023.

Tuesday, February 21, 2023

Hey everyone, the 2023 WHSS Tournament season is over. Congratulations to the Fighting Coconuts managed by Robert Spitaleri. Their Record was 12 wins and 1 loss. What a tough team that was. Championship patches were given to each player. The second-place team was managed by Wally Wallace whose record was 8 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie. Robert and Wally will now manage the All-Star teams that are scheduled to play on Friday, March 31st. That Friday is supposed to be our first day back to the Diamondplex. If that changes, I will let everyone know.

Now to the end of March, we will be playing at Poinciana Community Park. We have played there for the past couple of years. Most of us know how to get there. For those of you who have never been there, the address is: 5109 Allegheny Road, Poinciana, FL 34759. The easiest way to get there is to Google Poinciana Community Park and this will get you a map or directions to the park. We will be playing pickup ball. Whoever shows up will play. You need to be there no later than 9:00 AM and the games will begin by 9:30 AM.

I will have Hall of Fame Tickets for those of you that have not bought your ticket to the Banquet being held in Lakeland on March 15, 2023. I will also have enjoyment books for those who like to buy one.

 American League: Friday  2/17/23.

Today the American League was short again, we played 9 on 9. JD Davis was the designated pitcher and Joe D'Herin was the designated catcher for both teams. The Gold “Doubloons” who were home team were managed by Tommy Hamilton while Lou Coached the Purple “Haze” as visitor’s team.

Right off the Hazers couldn’t score a run with a quick first and second innings. However, the Doubloons only scored one run each of the first three innings. The Hazer started to warm up in the top of the third scoring 3 runs, make it a 3 to 3 game. That’s when the party started. Hazers scored 5 in the fourth 5 in the fifth and 5 in the seventh. The Doubloons come back and score five in the fourth, five in the six, and 5 in the eight. However, the Hazers kept scoring keeping the lead. It was sealed off with a pitching change by Dana Ferrande who came in the later innings keeping the Gold Doubloons from taking the lead. With a final score Purple 22 and Gold 20.

There were some great defensive plays by Lonnie Netzel, Manny Rios, Dana Ferrande, and Bradley Scheirer.

Great game was played by all. See you on Tuesday as this will be the last game at Diamond Plex for the next six weeks.

An exciting, close game was played today between Sammy Lopez's Yankees and the Fighting Coconuts. With solid hitting on both sides the score was tied 10 to 10 after three innings. Then the Yankees took the lead and held it until 7th inning. The Coconuts scored runs in the bottom of 7th and 8th innings to barely edge out a fine Yankees performance.

Final score: Coconuts 19 to Yankees 18.

B.J. Kallister pitched for Yankees and Pat LoPiccolo for the Coconuts.
Outstanding hitting for Yankees were: Ken Gelinas, Greg Denny and B.J. Kallister at 4/5 and Scott Seguin, Chris Constantine and Ralph Boswell 3 for 5.
Sam Lopez managed a good game and we are so glad he is able to play even though his hip is not cooperating and allowing easy movement.

The Coconuts were led in hitting by Ken Meyer and Jose Rivera. Both hit 4/4 and Ken had a beautiful home run. Excellent hitting also were Les Jacobson, Rick Brock and Bobby Castilleja who all hit 3/4. Pat LoPiccolo had a 2 key hits as did Richard Kay.

Ralph Boswell led us in prayer after the game.
