Today the boys from Winter Haven took on the crew at Solivita. This was the first game allowed at Solivita since the pandemic started.

The Winter Haven boys took the first game after falling behind in the 2nd inning. Final score was 9-7.

The Solivita crew took game 2, coming back in the 5th inning. Final score was 21-18.

Manny Rios followed behind with 3 home runs.
Other notable hits were Lou Guzman home run, Mark Tutrani 5/6 performance, Steve Hick and Tony Quinones both with 5 base hits each.
Charlie Giordano and Jose Rodriguez both with 4 base hits.
As usual, Jose Rivera made the catch of the day in right field with a snow cone catch that ended an inning.

Today we had 3 teams and a good time. We had a total of 31 players and the commissioner played defense for all three teams so everyone would get more bats. The teams had a mixture of mostly National League players but also some American League guys. The weather was good in that it was cloudy and not too hot. All 3 teams started well with 3 runs in the first inning. Then team 1 went cold and couldn't score, Teams 2 and 3 battled it out each inning with good hitting and defense. By the 6th inning teams 2 and 3 were tied 9 runs each. In the 7th inning team 1 managed one run and were dismissed. Then the remaining teams had a chance to win the game. Alas, neither team did score and the game ended at a tie.

We thank Lou Guzman for umpiring behind the plate the whole game.

Commissioner Witmer announced that next Tuesday we would not play since the fields will be under rework.

RECAP FOR THE GAMES THIS WEEK

On Tuesday, we had a two team-13 player per team game. Six players from the American League joined 20 players from the National League for a fun time. The commissioner umpired the game. We try to put the same number of American League players on each team to make it fair. Fabian had a VA appointment this morning so he was only around for the first inning. The managers were Bob Hite and Bob Zelazny and when Fabian left to go the the VA the score was tied 3-3. The score stayed close until the eight inning when Hite's team scored 5 runs. Final score was 14-9.

On Friday, everyone had recovered from the weekend tournament so we had a three team game with 13 players on two teams and one team with 12 players. We still can't get enough American League players to have an American League game so we will combine leagues whenever we have to. We are still doing the flip-flop in the last inning for three team games. The team with the most runs after six innings becomes the home team and sits in the last inning, the team with the least runs bats first and the second place team defenses against them. The second place team then bats and the first place team defenses against them. If the last place team or the second place team doesn't catch them, the game is over. In todays game, the second place team went ahead of the home team by three runs. The home team had to bat and the second place team had to protect their three run lead. The home team was in the middle of their line up when the inning started. The leadoff batter started the inning with a hit and they home team never made an out before they scored 4 runs. Final score 20-19. The third place team did manage to score 12 runs but it was not close enough.

It is starting to get hot in Florida and the humidity is getting higher. We will probably start playing less innings as the summer progresses. The heat took its toll on Loren Fabian this past weekend when he umpired the FHC games at Walker Road. In his fourth game of the day, he had to go to the hospital and get hydrated after suffering a minor heat stroke. He was given Sunday off but was doing great today.

 Friday, June 4th

We only had 29 players sign up today because of the Florida Half Century tournament in Polk County this weekend. Most of those players were in the National League and most of those players were playing in the Seventies tournament at Walker Road. I will be glad when these young kids get old enough to play on Fridays before a tournament. We went ahead and had three teams today. The commissioner played infield for all three teams and two teams had to borrow a player when they were in the field so we could have 11 players on the field.  It was a very strange mixed 3 team game today as the final score of 5-5-4 would indicate. The two 5 teams were managed by Vandenberg and Hite and the bronze metal was managed by Spitaleri. Hite's team scored 3 runs in the 4th inning and Vandy's scored 2 in the 4th otherwise there were only single run innings along with 8 goose eggs. Many, many balls were hit very hard but it was mostly a game of "atom ball" as most hard hit balls were hit right at'em.  Also there were very few errors and many double plays. See y'all Tuesday.

I had an early appt at the VA today but stopped by the Diamondplex on the way home. The National League was having a very good game on Field C and the American League was playing a double header on Field D against my old friends Solivita. I didn't catch a score on the National League before I had to leave. The American League team was leading Solivita 24-13 going into the open inning in the first game. Donnie was playing in the National League game and maybe can add the final scores to this.

This portion by Loren Fabian.

Loren does a good job trying to get a writeup every Tuesday and Friday for all of our players who are not with us during the summer time. But, every now and then he has other things he has to do. Here is the rest of the story.

The American League swept the boys from Solivita. The second game was a lot closer and Solivita had a chance to come back in the bottom of the seventh to win the second game. The defense from Winter Haven just wasn't having it and kept them scoreless in the last inning. We always have a great time playing against Solivita and when they open up their fields for visitors, we owe them a double header in Solivita. Looking forward to that happening soon.

In the National League, we had 33 players show up today. We had three teams of 11 players each. One team managed by Bob Zelazny brought their hitting shoes with them today. They scored 21 runs in six innings. They did not get to bat in the seventh inning because of a flipflop rule for three team games: ex. The team with the least runs bats first in the seventh inning and the second place team defenses against them. Then the second place team bats next and the first place team defenses against them. If the last place team or the second place team catches the first place team, the first place team bats in the bottom of the seventh inning. This generally keeps the first place team from having an open inning and scoring more runs and reduces the games time in the summer heat. Three team National League games generally take 2 to 21/2 hours to play a game. That is like playing a double header. In fact, the double header against Solivita in the American league was in the seventh inning when we finished our three team game today. If you are wondering how the other two teams did in the National League today, it was tied 7-7.
