It finally happened after being postponed by the hurricane. Don Witmer, commissioner of WHSS and Ed Steimle of Solivita Softball club got it put together today. Thank you Joe D'Herin for keeping it going while Donnie was playing ball in Utah.
First - The fans in the stands for Solovita were Kathy Renwick and Bea Kelley (not aunt Bea).
Second - I will commend both Ed and Don for making this fantastic game happen as well as talking of more to be played in the future. It sounds like this may be the beginning of a longtime friendship between two similar leagues.
Now - on to the game. Nick Matta umpired the plate and Loren Fabian called the field and I am glad to say there were no major disagreements even on a few very close plays. Everyone was great and respected the calls as made. VERY FUN GAME!!
The Solivita gang did not have their hitting shoes on today as they only mustered 8 runs and 12 hits
The final was Winter Haven 19 and Solivita 8. Bill Brown for Solivita was 2/3 with a triple and, Francisco Coves was 2/3 and Ralph Varrone was 2/3.
For Winter Haven, pitcher Angel (with his sense of humor) stole the show. He was 5-5 and WP. They were all singles. There were a couple very nice DPs made up the middle by WH.
One thing to know for sure, it could have been quite worse if not for a couple fine plays by Jack Bonura at SS, a fantastic catch in RF by James Bowers and the defensive play of the game by Bo Miller of a backhanded 1 hop headed up the middle and flip back to Jack at second for the inning ending out. All 3 of those saved multiple runs.
Joe D'Herin had a couple sweet plays at second for WH.
Let's keep doing this guys. This is what softball retirement is all about.
Write up by Loren Fabian.
