 Solivita Recap

Thursday 30 May 2024.

The Winter Haven travel team embarked on a thrilling journey to Solivita for a two-game matchup. The first game was an absolute nail-biter, with Winter Haven quickly scoring five runs and showcasing impeccable defense, holding Solivita to only seven runs. The final score was a triumphant 13-7 victory for Winter Haven.

The second game took a different turn, as Solivita came out swinging and Winter Haven struggled to score more than eight runs throughout the game. In the end, Solivita emerged victorious with a score of 19-8. Despite the outcome, we are eagerly anticipating our next competition next month. Let's bring our A-game and show them what we're made of!

A very close 3 team mixed game today with the pitchers being Pat Lopiccolo, Ron Thompson and Wally.  Couldn't tell who the managers were as the sheets just said hit, sit, field. I also can't do all the hitters as 1 sheet had no registration of how they got on base, but all runs were kept accurate as the final score was Pat 19, Ron 17 and Wally 16. Thompson led the entire game and were up 16, 11, 11 going into the open inning where they only plated 1 run and Wally scored 5 but Pat's team came up with 8 runs for the final.  

I will note that Kathie had a perfect day at the plate with a walk and 2 solid singles. She also made a fine catch in deep right field off the bat of one the American league sluggers, JD Davis.  

I would also like to welcome newcomer Dave Rounds who sent the first pitch thrown to him to the left field fence for a triple and followed that up with 2 singles for a perfect day at the plate in his WHSS debut game.

The FLORIDA NATIONAL GUARD GATOR REDLEG SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT was held on Saturday, May 25th. WHSS provided umpires for this annual event. Don Witmer, Lou Guzman, JD Davis, Mark Tutrani, Richard King, Gary Anderson, Manny Rios, Bob Vandenberg and Loren Fabian volunteered for this task. Below is a picture of the crew before the games began. A great big THANKS to all of you that volunteered to make this a successful event.

The schedule is out for the FLORIDA NATIONAL GUARD GATOR REDLEG SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT scheduled for this Saturday at the Diamondplex. Opening ceremonies will begin at 8:00 AM and the games will begin after the ceremonies are complete. Winter Haven Senior Softball has always provided umpires for this one-day fun tournament. Providing umpires at no cost to the FLORIDA NATIONAL GUARD allows them to use the funds raised from this tournament to benefit members of the FLORIDA NATIONAL GUARD. WHSS is still in need of volunteer umpires. If you would like to umpire, please show up at the Diamondplex at 8:00 AM Saturday morning. There will be a short umpire meeting to discuss the rules and the games will begin after the opening ceremonies. Food and Drinks will be provided to the umpires all day. We will be wearing last year's Grey WHSS shorts and this year's Dark Blue WHSS shirts. If you do not have those items, you can wear something close to that. 

Please come support your FLORIDA NATIONAL GUARD by volunteering to umpire at this fun tournament.

 TOURNAMENTS IN LAKELAND - MAY 22ND

Hey everyone, If you are interested in putting a team together to play in a tournament in Lakeland at the Southwest Softball Complex on Wednesday, May 22nd at 9:00 AM, let me know. There will be a 60's tournament, a 70's tournament and a 78's tournament. The competition will be from Lakeland Senior Softball, Brandon Senior Softball, Kissimmee Senior Softball and Solivita Senior Softball. 

I will have the sign-up sheets at the ballpark tomorrow. JD Davis is coordinating the Lakeland Tournaments. His phone number is 313.405.3348. Call him if you have any questions.

American League Update

On Thursday, May 2, 2024, the Winter Haven American League travel team traveled to Solivita for a two-game match-up. Winter Haven came out strong, scoring five runs in each of the first four innings while holding Solivita to only eight runs. Solivita struggled to find their rhythm, resulting in a final score of 28-14 in favor of Winter Haven.

The second game was more competitive, with Solivita scoring fifteen runs by the sixth inning. However, Winter Haven stepped up their game and scored nineteen runs by the bottom of the sixth. The final score was 19-15, with Winter Haven winning both games of the day.

We look forward to our next game in a few weeks.

 RECENT CHANGES AT THE DIAMONDPLEX

I hope everyone has noticed the recent changes at the Diamond Plex. There have been fans erected in every dugout. The pavilion that we usually sit under has two new benches. The two water fountains at the concession stand are new and have the added feature for water bottle filling stations. These improvements were made possible by Janie Powell, wife of Larry Powell. Janie asked the City of Winter Haven if she could do something in honor of her deceased husband, Larry Powell. Larry was involved in every aspect of Winter Haven Senior Softball. Larry was a Board member, a Hall of Fame member and managed teams every year at Winter Haven as well as managing numerous teams in the Florida Half Century Softball League. Larry was instrumental in Softball being a part of the Polk Senior Games which are named in honor of him and Janie.

I would like to thank Janie Powell for her generous donation to fund these improvements and thank the folks at Winter Haven Parks and Recreation for providing the labor to install these improvements.

The Votes from Tuesday's Election have been tabulated and Chris Constantine and Chris Lynch have been elected to the Board for another two-year term.
