RECAP OF THE GAMES FOR THE WEEK OF 11/23 - 11/26

Tuesday, November 23rd

It rained off and on all weekend and the Monday before the games on Tuesday. Three of the fields on Tuesday morning were not playable due to standing water. We managed to have a three team game on Field D with 39 players and the Commish. We put 13 players on each team and the Commish umpired the game. The final score was 12-12-20. We played the seventh inning using the "protect you lead" rule and the team with 20 runs did not get to bat in the 7th inning. No one provided a write up for this game.

Friday, November 26th

It was the Friday after Thanksgiving so we were not expecting a big crowd. The fields were in good condition and the weather was great for playing softball. Forty five players showed up to play ball. We had four teams. The National League had 12 players per team and the American League had 10 players per team with the Commish catching for both teams and umpiring. The game was close for the first two innings with the score 7-6 after two innings. The Visiting Team put on a hitting show for the next three innings, scoring 14 runs. The Home Team could only manage 1 run during that time. The final score was 25-15.

RECAP FOR THE WEEK OF 11/16 TO 11/19

Tuesday, November 16, 2021, Diamond Plex.

Game recap on today’s game against Kissimmee softball.

Today the Winter Haven gray team took on the squad from Kissimmee. We provide three players to Kissimmee as they were short handed: Manny Rois, Rawlinson Santaella, and Doug McKinney. All played well.
These games weren’t close as Winter Haven won both games 8-17 and 20-9.

The team came out hitting and played terrific defense.
Dana Ferrande started his debut as a pitcher.
Notable hitting: Rusty Skipper went 7/7 with a in-the-park home run. Don Fee and Mike Vaccaro both hit over the fence Home runs.

We will take on Kissimmee again on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2021 at Diamond Plex.

We will be going to Solivita on Thursday December 2nd, 2021.

  1. Radley Pcholinski 3/4
  2. Mike Vaccaro 3/8 HR.
  3. Don Fee 6/7 HR, SAC
  4. Lou Guzman 6/7
  5. Tom Hamilton 5/7
  6. Tony Quinines 5/6, SAC.
  7. Dana Ferrande 5/7
  8. Al Guzzo 5/7
  9. Jeff Stier 3/6, BB
  10. Rusty Skipper 7/7, HR.
  11. Leonard DeBroeck 2/7
  12. Mark Tutrani 3/7

From LGG.

While the American League was playing Kissimmee on Field D, The National League had enough players to have four teams. Two teams played on Field C and two teams played of Field E. No one did a write for either field but the game on Field E was won by one run. The score for the game on Field C was 19-11 but the losing team left at least 10 runners on base due to some great defensive plays that kept them from scoring more runs.

Friday, November 19th

We got lucky on Friday and were able to play ball. It rained off and on all day Thursday. I think the weather kept a bunch of people away because we only had 51 people show up today. We had five teams. The American League played on Field D with 20 players and the National League played on Field C with 31 players. I did not receive a write up from Field C but the final score was 9-15-19. Thanks to Elmer Black for umpiring the game.

The American League game on Field D was close the entire game. It was tied 4-4 in the second inning, Visitors up by 2 in the 4th inning, Home team up by 1 in the 6th inning and the final score was the Home team 13 and Visitors 12. Wally Wallace and Mark Tutrani were the pitchers. Hitters for each team were:

Visitors
Manny Rios 5/5
Mike Vacarro 4/5
Don Witmer 3/4
JR Santaella 3/5

Home
Steve Hicks 5/6
Ton Kniery 4/5
Tom hamilton 3/4
George Knox 3/4
Ralph Boswell 3/4
Dana Ferrande 3/5

Thanks to Joe D'Herin for umpiring the game.

The City of Winter Haven has decided to change the field designations. Field B, which has always been the "sun" field is now Field A. Field C, which has been our main field for 23 years is now Field B. The Polk State College girls softball team field is now Field E. The Polk State College girls softball team is called the Eagles, therefore the designation of there field, Field E, now stands for the Eagles.

The City of Winter Haven has asked us to not park in the West parking lot. The maintenance workers and delivery trucks have trouble doing their jobs when that parking lot is full. Please park in the Polk State College parking lot on the south side of the ballpark.

Don't forget our Angel Tree project is ongoing. There will be more names to select on Friday morning. Please support the Angel Tree.

The American League will host Kissimmee today.

Tuesday Nov. 9th

Bob Hite returned to WHSS from a summer up north and did a masterful job of putting together an American league team on field B and a 3 team game on Field C in the absence of our commissioner Don Witmer who was playing softball in the SSUSA Winter Nationals in Cape Coral.

The managers were Vandenberg, Capozzi and Hite. The Hite team came out smoking, scoring in every inning by scoring 2, 4 and 5 runs in each of 2 innings they batted in. They didn't bat in the 7th due to the protect your lead rule.
The final score ended up being 22-7-7 as the Vandenberg and Capozzi teams could never really get untracked.

The catchers, Shearer and Poke had a busy day at the plate with a total of 6 runners being thrown out at home trying to score. Bob Hite's homecoming was also gratifying as he had many, many plays, playing up the middle and making them all. Catchers were shared as 2 teams only had 10 players.

Now for the hitters.
4 hits.   Boito, Learn and Hicks
3 hits.   Hite, Hill, Vandenberg, O'Callaghan
2 hits.   Gonzalez, Vining, Capozzi, Gallagher, Shaffer, Marino, Lopez, Wells, Boito, Rutan and Castillega

No games this Friday the 12th. See y'all Tuesday

American League Game Recap 11/09

Recap Tuesday 11/9/21

American League played with limited players. Some players are out playing in tournaments.

American League merged with some National League players.

Each team had nine players with Dave Doerbaum serving as the DH for both teams.

Home team was managed by Mark Tutrani and the visitors were manage by Lou Guzman.

The game was back and forth 0-2, 5-2, 7-7, 9-10. Team Lou scored 4 in the 5th, holding a 14-10 lead. Team Mark could only muster up 5 runs the rest of the way. Final score was team Lou 25 and team Mark 15.

Dave Doerbaum hit 2 over the fence home runs, and Don Fee hit 1 over the fence. Pete Gutenberger had an in-the-park homer as well as a triple. Chris Constantine and Don Torok both hit triples showing that the National players still have life in their bats.
Rusty Skiper went 4/5 with a triple of his own.

It should be noted that Ron Pepin pitched for team Lou. He hadn't pitched since the beginning of the year due to injury. He was able to hold team Mark to 15 runs, all while yelling his shirt size (inside joke).
New comer Victoria Schade hit 2 base hits and flashed some leather at home plate (welcome).

1. Rusty Skipper 4/5
1. Tom Kniery 3/5

RECAP FOR THE WEEK OF 11/2 - 11/5

We had enough players to have five teams today. The National League had a three team game and the American League had a two team game. I did not get a write up for the National League game but we used the "protect your lead" rule and the final score was 16-14-8.

The American League had 22 players today. Visiting Team 1 was managed by JD Davis and Home Team 2 was managed by Lou Guzman. Team 1 jumped out to a 2 run lead in the first inning, scored 3 more runs in the second inning to take a 3 run lead. Team 2 scored 3 runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game. The game stayed close until the sixth inning when Team 2 scored 4 runs to take a 11-6 lead. The defense for both teams kicked in and the final score after nine innings 11-6.

Top Hitters for Team 1 were Mike Vaccaro 3/4, Dave Shirer 3/4 with a triple.

Top Hitters for Team 2 were Rawlinson Santaella 4/4 with a home run, Don Witmer 4/4, Dana Ferrande2/3

ANGEL TREE     ANGEL TREE     ANGEL TREE     ANGEL TREE     ANGEL TREE

It is time to start collecting money for our Angel Tree project that we do each year for the Lake Elbert Elementary school. We adopt a minimum of 50 kids and provide them with some present(s) at Christmas. This may be the only thing they get for Christmas. Elmer Black has successfully ran this program for many years and had to get Robert Spitaleri and his wife Linda to do this last year because of the Covid-19 travel restrictions. Elmer will be with us again this year but cannot be here until the middle of November. Robert and Linda will once again help Elmer with this program and need to start collecting money tomorrow. The staff at Lake Elbert Elementary School should be providing us with a list of the kids sometime this week. As soon as we get the list, we will have a tree with the names on it. You do not have to wait for the list unless you are planning on buy the gift yourself. You can start donating money tomorrow and Elmer, Robert and Linda will do the shopping for you. We are asking for a donation of $20.00 from everyone. You can give more if you would like and we will buy more gifts.  Thanks.

Don Witmer
