 Tuesday, May 25th

We had 42 ball players show up today. Not enough American league players to have a game so we combined with the National League for a three team game. One American League player went home so we had two 14 player teams and one 13 player team. There were not a lot of bats during this game because all of the great defensive plays. Some players only got two turns at bat while most of the players got three turns at bat. The top two teams tied at 15 all in seven innings.

The American League hosted a team from Sebring today. Lou Guzman put together the team from Winter Haven and Charlie Giordano, who plays in Winter Haven and Sebring, brought a great group of guys from Sebring. They played a double header beginning at 9:00 AM. The score in the first game was 18-14 Sebring and was decided in the last inning. In the second game, Winter Haven jumped out ahead early and managed to hold on to the lead for the entire game. Sebring had the tying runs on base in the bottom of the seventh inning when a double play from Rad to Tony Q to Manny ended the game. The final score was 14-12 Winter Haven. A big thanks to Charlie Giordano for making this happen and to Wally Wallace for umpiring both games. The guys in the National League really enjoyed their game without the guns from the American League. An now comes the National League.  Write up by Don Witmer

Managers were Zelazny and Witmer in a very close game indicated with the final being 20-18 in favor of the Witmer team. Didn't start out that way though as after the top of 4th Witmer was holding a strong 9-0 lead. Then Capozzi and Gibson started the bottom with singles and 10 more hitters followed to score 9 to tie it all up. Then the lead changed hands 3 times before the final outcome. In the top of the ninth, Witmer was trailing by one run with the bottom four batters coming up. They all got hits and 3 runs were scored to take a two run lead. There was a total of 52 hits in this dramatic "pitchers duel."  Zelazny led the hitting barrage going 5-5. Here are some others.

4 hits.   Spitaleri w/hr, Jacobs, Constantine
                 Kniery
   3 hits.  Morton, Hawbaker, Thompson
                Coffman, O'Callaghan
2 hits.   Reagan (welcome back Bobby)
                 Skidmore, Capozzi, Dowdy, Gibson
                 Witmer, Hite, Poke
The best play of the game came early in the 2nd inning. A base hit went to left field and turned into an overrun at 2nd base with a tag out there, then the fielder turned and fired a low strike to catcher Gibson to get a runner trying to score from 3rd for a double play. Sorry, I can't recall the defensive players making the first part of that play. (I do have a very good memory, just not very long)  😆

 Friday, May 21st

A very well played defensive mixed 3 team game played today. Managers were Steve Hill, Ron Thompson and Don Witmer. 1st inning started off with Hill plating 4, Thompson plating 2 and 0 for Witmer. Hill kept scoring every other inning thru the 5th but the other teams kept putting up goose eggs so after 5 the score was 12-2-0. Never saw so many goose eggs in a row. Hill scored 1 more in the 6th for 13 and didn't have to hit in the 7th. Thompson scored 4 in the 7th for a total of 6 and Witmer scored 5 in the 6th and 0 in the 7th for a final of 13-6-5. 24 RUNS BETWEEN 3 TEAMS?????  OKAY. It was fun.

JD rapidly turned into the best 2nd basemen in the league by making 3 very sharp plays. Robert Spitilari is the best left handed SS in Florida as he proved by going far onto the outfield grass to snag a blooper, turn and fire to 2nd to double off the runner trying to scamper back after the catch everyone thought would drop in. And Steve Hill made a very strong catch in foul territory in left, banged into the fence but held onto the ball as he took a couple steps before the ball popped out after hitting the fence.

Hitters.
3 hits.   Dana, Witmer, Rad, Tutrani,
                 Guzman, Castilleja
2 hits.   Gutenberger, Boswell, Hill, Hite
                 B.J., Lynch, Vandenberg, Capozzi
                 Hicks, Hudson, Learn.

There were no home runs.

 Tuesday, May 17th

What a nice day to play softball. Warm breeze, lots of sun and a bunch of great guys. No gals today. We had 44 players today. The American League borrowed a few players from the National League so we had four teams. I played in the American League so most of this writeup will be about us. We had 10 players on each team and the "hit team" supplied a catcher so the defense could have a middle infielder. The visitors, managed by Mike Vaccaro,  started out a little slow scoring one run in the top of the 1st inning. The home team, managed by Lou Guzman,  responded with five runs, all on two outs. After several innings,  visiting team caught up and it was a seesaw game until we ended up tied in the 8th inning. Manny Rios started out the top on the ninth with a nice triple to left center field. Doug McKinney brought him home on a sac fly to center field. That is all the visiting team could come up with. Now in the bottom of the ninth, the home team managed to get two runners on base but could not score the run they needed to tie and win the game. Final score was 15-14, Visitors.

The National League played with 24 players today, 12 on a team. That is good because they can play 12 players with a fifth outfielder. No one had to sit out today. The game started out to be pitching duel with the home team  ahead 4-3 after four innings. That changed quickly in the bottom of the fifth with the home team scoring five runs. The home team scored 5 more runs in the sixth and four more runs in the seventh. The home team held the visitors to two runs during that time and at the bottom of the seventh, the score was 17-5. The visitors looked like they were going to come back in the eight inning but a  couple of fly balls to the outfield ended their rally that inning. Final score was 18-8, Home Team.

Tuesday, May 11th

Well, most of our snowbirds have gone home now so teams are starting to get fewer and smaller. We managed to get 42 players today so we had an American League game with 15 players and a National League game with 27 players. We divided our American League players into three teams of five and two teams play defense and the third team hits. It is pretty intense in this summer heat and everyone gets a lot of bats. The National League played a normal two team game with 13 on one team and 14 on the other. We play with 12 players on the field so everyone gets as much playing time as possible and still gets to rest in this summer heat. The score in the American League game was 20-15-4, six innings. The 4 run team hit well but hit everything right to the defense. I didn't get the score from the National League game.

As the summer progresses, we will be playing a lot of three team mixed games with American League and National League players combined. We will do whatever it takes to play softball.

 Friday, May 14th

Very good mixed league 3 team game today. It was very close all the way and 10-10-10 after 5 innings with 2 innings to go. For the benefit of our snowbirds the final was 17-15-14. I grabbed the score sheets to do a write up and there is a large lack of information on them that makes it tough but it was a very hard fought game and very enjoyable. I won't be there Tuesday but will on Friday and try to get more info on the score sheets.

PS. The runs are always kept very accurately.
