We finally got to play softball today after being rained out for the last playing dates. We played a double header today with our regular teams in the first game and the second game was with one of our great sponsors, Dukes Brewhouse. The first game was a three team game with 11 players on each team. The second game was the important one. Dukes Brewhouse set up a tent and a grill and cooked hot dogs and hamburgers during the game. Fifteen of the Dukes girls came to play ball and we borrowed Rachel Matta so each team would have 8 girls. Team A managed by Don Witmer had Willie Morton on the pitchers mound, Curt Coffman at Second Base and Pete Gutenberger and Freddie Gonzalez in the outfield. We scattered the 8 Dukes girls around the infield and outfield. Team B was managed by Russ King. Donnie Scarbrough was on the mound for Team B with Bobby Murphy at shortstop, Nick Matta and Wally Granger in the infield. Jim Vining and Russ King was in the outfield. Lee Baker was the DH for Russ's Team. The guys had to use wood bats and most of the girls used Rachel Mattta's loaded bat. The game ended in a tie with the score being 8-8. A good time was had by all participants and we hope to do it again in August.
Please remember to support all of our great sponsors. Their support of our league allows us to do a lot of things for our members.

Sam Lopez
Guys,
I just heard that Sam Lopez is in Winter Haven Hospital, Room 722. His son, Sam Jr., ask me to get the word out. He is hoping that if some of us stop by, it might lift his spirits.

NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE
There will be no games in Winter Haven tomorrow, Friday June 14th. The City of Winter Haven called me late this afternoon and said the rains for the past three days have left the fields unplayable. They have a tournament this weekend and will need all day tomorrow to try and get the fields ready for the tournament.
See you next Tuesday.

SOLIVITA SOFTBALL
On Friday, June 7th, Solivita came to Winter Haven for another round of Double header games. They brought their bats with them this time. In the first game, they scored 27 runs and hit at least 5 home runs. WHSS only scored 17 runs. In the second game it stayed close for all seven innings and Solivita tied the score at 12 all in the bottom of the seventh inning. We quit after seven innings because it was hot and we had refreshments to drink.
Solivita brought a photographer with them and he sent me a bunch of pictures of our players. You can click on the WH TEAM link or the Open link to view the pictures.

The attached link has been setup so anybody that has the link can view the photos. If your players want to send the link to someone they can. I keep the links open for a month before I delete them, so if any wants to download a photo they should not delay. If you have trouble opening the link let me know and I'll try to fix it.

It is with great sadness that I want to let our softball family know that Johnny Merritt has passed away. Johnny was truly a softball player that loved playing softball in Winter Haven. On a recent visit to his daughters house up north, Johnny was diagnosed with a form of Leukemia and decided that he did not want to undergo treatment. Johnny visited us at the ballpark when he came back to Florida. He passed away several weeks later. Johnny will be missed by all of us at Winter Haven Senior Softball. There will be no services at this time for Johnny. Please keep his wife Pat and the rest of Johnny's family in your thoughts and prayers as we go about our daily business.
