Fat Tuesday

Another Fat Tuesday went by without a single string of beads being thrown about.  I'm disappointed.  Just a couple of quick notes.  On the playoff date March 22nd, we will be having an 'End O' Tournament' celebration involving food and drink of some sort, details to follow.  Also please check out Bob's List for the bargains there; i.e. t-shirts for just a buck! AND don't forget to check out the Team Pictures Photo Album for your team's shot.  We'll publish them here as we get them.

 Rays- Tigers-Rangers

Going into the game you wondered how each team would perform after last Friday’s ‘bye”, the games not played due to the tournament.  For the Tigers the question was, would they play like putty cats or big cats?  The answer,  they performed like Saber Tooth Tigers.  Scoring 26 runs in seven innings and soundly beating both the Rays and the Rangers.
The 2013 Tigers

I asked Tigers manager, Don Witmer, what he thought of the game after the final out was recorded.  He answered, “we hit pretty well”.  This was a little like Sitting Bull saying, “we seemed to do alright”, while fighting Custer at the Little Big Horn.  The Tigers played sound defense, had solid pitching and good hitting.  They had three inside the park HRs, off the bats of Torres, Wiltshire and Reagan.  The rest of the team feasted on the pitching, as well.
The 2013 Rays

The Rays had a nice game too; they rallied in the 7th inning to take a one run lead for a chance at 2nd place, in the three team game. The Rays scored six runs, in the 7th inning, after two outs were made. Going into the bottom of the 7th inning the score was Rays 13- Tigers 26 and Rangers 12.
The 2013 Rangers

The Rangers could not find their bats and they made some costly running mistakes in the game.  Earlier in the game the Rangers had two players thrown out at the plate.  Maybe things would change in the bottom of the 7th.  They did not; the Rangers started a mini rally, scoring one run to tie the game with the Rays.  However, a costly running mistake cut the rally short.  One of the Ranger’s players missed touching 3rd base while trying to score.  After an appeal, he was wrung up by the alert 3rd base umpire, for the 2nd out of the inning.  After a fly out, later in the inning, the game ended in a 2nd place tie.

Final Score: Rays 13- Tigers 26- Rangers 13.

Cubs VS Pirates
On a beautiful Florida day the Pirates came out swinging hot bats.  Hits by Ducham, Wilcox, Burrell, Waddell, and Lyons, Ron Augustein singled in the 5th
run without an out being recorded.

The Cubs came out swinging the bats also. Singles by Wilson, Depalma, and Kline,  followed by a double by Evans, base hits by Leggett, Cuscovitch and Barnes netted 5 runs for the Cubs.
The 2013 Pirates

second and two in the third inning.  Meanwhile the Cubs rallied for 5 in the second on hits by LaMay (just off the DL) Wilson, Depalma, Kline, Evans and pool
player Terry Smith.

In the third hits by Leggett, Fulton, LaMay, Wilson,
Depalma sandwiched between two walks produced another 5 runs.  After 3 the score was Pirates 8 Cubs 15.

Both teams must have taken naps in the 4 inning as no runs were scored.

The Pirates scored 2 in the top of the 5th and the Cubs tallied another 5 runs.  The Pirates tried to take control of the game in the 6th by scoring 6 runs after two were out on hits by Lyons, Correthers, Ducham, Stepp, Wilcox, Burrell and Waddell, closing the gap too Pirates 16 Cubs 20.

Kelly's Ultimate Sports has the Miken Ultra II Red, Black and two-piece bats on their website showing the 'Make Offer' button.  The bats are priced at $189 (black & red) and $209 (two-piece) but the make-offer button means they will sell them at a lower price.  I'd make a low offer and see what they come back with?   http://mikensoftballbats.kellysultimatesports.com/

Hank Aaron's Birthday

Field B

A dark cloud fell over the Winter Haven Softball field today as word spread around to all of the ballplayers today that  the daughter of Wayne Mundy passed
away suddenly.  Wayne's a longtime member of the league and a player on the Cubs team not to mention one of the most friendly and popular players in our club.  We ask you to keep Wayne and his family in your prayers.

In previous games between the Giants and Cubs, the Giants scored 5 runs in most every inning.  Today the crafty pitching of the Cubs Ed Kline kept the Giants off stride all day, (or maybe the Giants bats were in a mid season slump).  Elmer Black and Bill Miller started the first with singles, a fly out and than a
single by Jerry Remington, a walk and  a single by John Merritt tallied 3 runs. The Cubs came to bat in their first with singles by Ray Depalma, Ed Kline and
(just off the DL) Bill Evans, a fielders choice and singles by Erv Fitzki and Reg Barnes.  Score after one Giants 3 Cubs 4.

The Giants came back in the second with singles by Lee Baker, J. Gibson and Manager Bloom, Black and B Miller to score another 3 runs.

There wasn't much action in the next few innings until the Cubs came to bat in the bottom of the 5th inning.  Pool players Rob Reed and Alan Lavato started with singles, then base hits by Ken Wilson, Ray Depalma and a triple by Bill Evans followed by Walt Leggett's timely base hit.  Score after 5
was Giants 9 Cubs 10.

The Cubs have been hampered by injuries and health problems most of the season with Bill Evans, Bill Wolf, Don LaMay, and now Joe Deforge on the DL.  Pool players filling in today helped the Cubs in the 6th inning. Following a walk and then a single by Barnes, pool player Lyons reached on an error to load them up, then Rob Reed hammered a grand slam home run to deep left field.  Reed also make some excellent catches in Left Center as did Alan Lavato at short stop.

The Cubs came back with 3 more runs in the 8th inning and the never give up Giants also scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th but fell short this time.

And so the last place Cubs have the honor of knocking off the previously undefeated Giants.

Final score Giants 13 Cubs 17.

Giants Hitters
  • Black 3 for 5
  • Remington 3 for 5

Cubs Hitters

  • Ed Kline 3 for 4 with double and triple
  • Bill Evans 3 for 4 with triple
  • Reg Barnes 3 for 4 with double
  • Rob Reed with double and Grand Slam

Super Bowl Friday

The way teams played today  you'd think it was the super bowl and not just the Friday before.  Great fun guys!

Field E

The wind blowing in and the sun shining in the eyes of the outfielders, Field E was the site of a close 3 way contest between the Rays (Larry Powell), Angels (Freddy Gonzalez) and Red Sox (Jeff Simon).

The Rays got the scoring started with a leadoff double by Don Scarbrough and a HR by Roger Edwards. Denny Shaffer made a great catch, stabbing a line drive to end the threat.  The Angels responded with 2 runs of their own when Pat Drouilard hit a HR after Juan Toro got on base with a single.  The Sox got 5 in the bottom of the inning, when 7 batters reached base, the big hit was delivered by George Radlien who drove in 3 runs with a double.

More fireworks highlighted the 3rd inning when Don Scarbrough got things started again for the Rays, with a triple.  The Angels responded with 3 runs, with 2 outs, when Freddy Gonzalez, not to be outdone,  had triple, Juan Toro singled, Les Jacobson doubled and Pat Drouilard end the hit parade with another triple.  The Sox answered with 3 singles (Harris, Andrews, and Hamilton) before Bob Zelazny's triple and Don Held's double.

At the end of 3 the score stood Rays – 7, Angels – 6, Sox – 10.

The hot hitting continued in the 4th when Larry Powell lined a double down the line, to score 2 runs.  The Angels started their part of the inning with 5 singles (Denny, Wells, Marion, Jackson, and Linton) before recording an out, a sac fly by Gerry Andrews and ending with a single by Holder.  The Sox answered with 5 runs of their own on 3 doubles (Radlien, Hite, and Andrews), 2 singles (Simon & Hamilton) and Mike Wheeler taking a walk for the team.

The Rays got the 5th frame started when the first 5 hitters (Scarbrough, Edwards, Jacobs, Erb, Zakrowski) all got hits to score 4 runs. Juan Toro had a HR for the Angels who went relatively quietly.  The Sox threatened to run away with the game, when Don Held tripled before Steve Hill's run scoring single, but Richie Marino in right field and Les Jacobson in right center made running catches to kill a Sox rally before it could get started.

The 6th inning was quiet for all 3 teams and when the frame was over the score was Rays – 16, Angels – 13, Sox – 16, the final act in this 3 ring circus had yet to be played out.

The gallant Rays started the inning with a single from J D Davis hoping to spark an outburst of runs.  But the Rays were blanked and then needed to hold the Angels and get so help from the same Angels so they could salvage a tie.  The Angels need 3 to tie; the first batter flied out to Frank Jacobs who juggled the ball before securing it for the out.  Juan Toro tripled ahead of a Les Jacobson long sac fly.  With 2 outs the Angels still needed 2 runs to tie, they got 4 runs when 6 batters in a row got hits: a triple by Pat Drouilard and singles by King, Wells, Marino and Jackson with Denny's double scoring the final 2 runs to break the tie.

The Sox came to bat in the bottom of the 7th needing 2 to tie and 3 to win.  Al Andrews singled, Tom Hamilton was walked before Bob Zelazny moved them both up with a long fly to left.  With the tying run on second base Don Held was walked to load the bases and create a force at any base.  Steve Hill answered the bell with a 2 run single to tie the score, before advancing to second on the throw.  Now, with the winning run on third Denny Shaffer was walked to again setup a force at any base.  Enter George Radlien who lined the game winning hit over the head on the second baseman.  The final was Rays – 16, Angels – 18, Sox – 19.

Rays:

  • Scarbrough 4-4, 2B, 3B
  • Edwards 3-4, HR, 2B
  • Jacobs 3-4
  • Brock 4-4

Angels:

  • Toro 4-4, HR, 2B
  • Drouilard 4-4, 2 3B, HR
  • Marino 4-4, 3B

  • Radlien 3-4, 2 2B

Field C

On a cool Florida morning that turned into a beautiful afternoon, there was a hotly contested game between the Braves and Cubs.  The Braves charged out of the batters box scoring 5 runs in both of the first two innings. Peterson, Stewart, Chrest, Miller, Ravo all started with hits and the next few batters did their job by driving in the max runs for the inning.

The second started with McPartlan's base hit and an error, followed by three straight home runs by Peterson, Stewart and Chrest.   Great hitting display guys!  Now down 10 runs, the Cubs bats came to life with 3 runs in the bottom of the second.  Five singles by Leggett, Wilson, Fulton, Taylor and Altamose did the damage in that inning.

After holding the hot hitting of the Braves to a scoreless 3rd inning, the Cubs came back to tie
the score with 7 runs.  Deplama and Mundy started the inning with singles, then a fielder's choice followed by another single by Leggett and a walk.  Fulton singled and Manager Ted Taylor drove a triple to deep right center field. Altamose
drove him home.

In the 5th inning for the Braves, the top of the order came to bat again (the score sheet did not show hits for the first three but they did get on
base) then Lautenschlager and Miller singled and Ravo doubled to deep left center to bring the total runs for the inning at five.  At the end of 5 the
score was Braves 15 the Cubs 12.

In the forth inning the Cubs catcher, 89 year old Joltin' Joe Deforge smashed a ground ball to shortstop.  The force of the swing took him to the ground and Joe was removed from the line up with an injured shoulder.  Get healed quick Joe we need you.  The Cubs scored 5 in the 6th inning to tie the game at 17.

With each team scoring in the 7th and 8th innings the Cubs held a 1 run lead.  The Braves top of the line up came to bat (need we say more)  Manager Moot's sluggers had a single by Peterson, another
homer by Stewart, double by Chrest, triple by Lautenschlager, an error and triple by Ravo tallied 6 runs for the Braves.

The Cubs came out swinging in the bottom of the 9th but fell short on some excellent fielding plays.  Final Score Braves 28 Cubs 23.

Braves Hitters
  • Peterson 4 for 5 with homer
  • Stewart 5 for 5 with triple and 2 homers
  • Chrest 4 for 5 with homer
  • Miller 3 for 5
Cubs Hitters
  • Depalma 4 for 6
  • Mundy 5 for 6
  • Kline 4 for 6
  • Wilson 5 for 6
  • Fulton 4 for 6
  • Taylor 4 for 4 with two walks

Field B

We had a “barn burner” on Field “B”, between the Tigers and the Rangers. What type of game was it? Both teams had more hits than the Beatles. Runs were scored faster than a gambling granny could drop coins, in a slot tournament, in Vegas. Teams were hotter than a firecracker, lit at both ends.
Field “B” wasn’t a softball field, as much as it was a pinball machine. The ball seemed to be always kept in play; batters hit their target areas like a pinball wizard. Defensive outs were hard to come by. It was a great display of hitting, by both teams. A total of 77 runs were scored by the time the game ended.
It would take too much time to break down the entire game. It suffices to say that both teams traded leads throughout the game. By the time we reached the top of the 9th inning the (Home team) Rangers held a one run lead; Tigers 30- Rangers 31.

Could any team really hold on to a one run lead in this “scorefest”? If you answered no, you may pass go and collect your monopoly money, you are correct. The snarling Tigers sprung at their prey and scored six runs, in the top of the 9th. The Rangers came to bat in the bottom of the 9th, trailing by 5 runs. This is a determined Rangers team that has scored well at the end of a game, recording a few come-from –behind wins this year. The Rangers scored 5 times, in their half of the frame, to tie the game.
Tigers 36 - Rangers 36

By league rules, one extra inning was played to see if a team could pull out the win.

The Tigers scored two runs in their half of 10th inning. The big hit was by Herb Osterreid, who knocked in the go ahead runs, with two outs on the board. Good hitting under pressure by Herb!

The Rangers came to bat in the bottom of the 10th, looking to score and win the game. Jack Benson and Tim Gallagher got on base, setting up runners on the corners. Don Ing hit a force out, scoring Jack Benson. The Rangers were now one run behind.

Tommy Wise came up, with one out and hit a grounder to short. Fielder Jimmy Laffoon flipped the ball to second base, for the 2nd out and Kenny Ota threw to 1st, trying to complete the double play. That is when the wheels came off the bus. The first base umpire called the streaking Tommy Wise safe. Now, if you were to ask 22 guys was he safe or out, you would probably get 11 safe calls from my team and 11 out calls from the Tigers squad. It was a bang –bang close play.

Tommy is now on first and there are two outs, the game is still to be decided. The next two batters (Kirk Coffman and Jim Goodhue) get clutch hits, to score Tommy and tie the game. Ed Gazarak is intentionally walked to load the bases. Ron Butler comes up with the game on his shoulders and is able to work the pitcher for a walk. A hard fought game played by two good teams.
Final Score: Tigers 38- Rangers 39.

Leading Hitters

Tigers
  • Ken Ota, 3 / 6 with a double and 2 walks.
  • Don Keller, 7 / 8 with 4 doubles.
  • Jim Laffoon, 7 / 7 with a double and a walk.
  • Herb Osterreid, 5 / 6 and a walk and a Sac.
  • John Byrd, 5 / 7 with 2 doubles.
  • Bill Rutan, 4 / 5 and 2 walks.
  • Rick Woodard, 5 / 7 with a triple.
  • Don Hawbaker, 4 / 6 and a walk.
