Cobra's vs Dukes

Cobra's lead off hitter Larry Chrest hit a homer run to deep left field to start the game . The Cobra's quickly followed up with hits by Fred Dampier , Jim Laffoon , Ed Segal ,Bobby Castilleja , and Pat Accetta to jump out to a 4 run lead . The Dukes roared right back on solo home runs by Ray Roy , Bob Skidmore and Bob Zelazny, Dave Hartly added a 2 run shot for the 4th home run of the inning  ,  5-4 Dukes after one .

Both teams cooled off , not scoring until the Cobra's 4th on a single by Laffoon and a Jack Mender double tying the game at 5 . The Dukes answer with 4 in the bottom of the inning on back to back 3 baggers by Justin Mears and Zelanzy followed by singles by Alf Gibbons , Jerry Remington and Ken Gelinas . 9-5 Dukes after four .

The Dukes added one on a single by Jerry Witter and a triple by Steve Hill , made it 10-5 Dukes after five .

The Cobra's trimmed the lead to 10-7 on hits by Frank Jacobs , Dean Schapler , Dampier , and Ken Weber  . The Dukes also added 2 on hits by Mears , Hartly and Willie Morton . 12-7 Dukes after seven .

The Dukes turned on the defense holding the Cobra's scoreless over the last 3 innings , while scoring single runs in the 7&8th .Final score 14-7 Dukes .

Flyers and Braves met today on Field D for what was a very close game until the ninth inning.  Each team had 14 players today and Manager Fabian line his team up in this order.  Wells, Boswell, George, Levesque, Hite, Travis, Grabb, Benson, Vorhes, Gilpin, Dudley, Gallagher, Fabian and Baker.  Home team manager of the Braves, Strait batted in this order:  Torok, Newton, McLellan, Peski, Burtner, Learn, LeTourneau, Herb O., Lopiccolo, Andrews, Michalski, Strait, LaMay and Bess.

Flyers posted 3 runs on doubles by George and Travis.  Braves scored 2 runs on 4 singles from Newton, McLellan, Burtner, and Learn.  Flyers added 1 run and the second and third innings while the Braves were scoreless in those same innings. Both teams added big O’s in the fourth inning.  In the fifth Fab’s guys added another run.  Braves bats came alive in the bottom of the inning on doubles from Peskie and Learn and singles off the bats of Burtner, Herb O., Lopiccolo and Michalski driving in the 5^th run.  Score after five now 7 to 6 Braves. 

In the sixth Wells drove his 2nd long drive of the game to the fence but his pinch runner had to stop at first base.  Boswell singled, George tripled, Levesque singled and Bob Hite blasted one to the fence for a Home Run and the 5^th run of the inning. Braves added two more runs in the eighth inning. 

Ninth started had Levesque reaching on an error followed by singles from Hite and Travis, a Grabb double and singles from Vorhes, Gilpin and Dudley and 7 runners crossing home plate.  Score now 19 to 9 Flyers.  LaMay, Torok, Newton and McLellan had base hits but could only manage 2 runs.  Final Score was Flyers 19 Braves 11.

Hitters for Flyers:  George 2 for 4 DBL, 3B, Hite 3 for 4 HR, Gilpin 3 for 4 3B. the rest of the team was 2 for 4 or 1 for 4.

Hitters for Braves: Newton and McLellan 3 for 4, Peskie 2 for 4 3B, Learn, Lopiccolo and LaMay all 2 for 3 the rest were 1 for 3.

History lesson:  In the year 2006 (13 years ago) Russ King manager for the Post 8 team this year led the league in hitting with a .824 batting average.  He had 81 AB, 67 hits, 16 2B, 7 3B and 5 HR. His Orange team won the league that year.  On his team were Jerry Remington who batted .671, Bill Rutan at .667, Ron Thompson at .630, Jerry Witter at .559 and Don LaMay at .551 and Terry Feehan at .265.  All of these guys are still playing today except Terry who is the leagues number one fan.  

n a recent article I wrote about History I could not find the picture of the team.  Well I found it and have it attached.  Not sure if I can name them correctly but will give it a try..

Today's game started out as a high scoring one. Duke's started by scoring 3 runs in the first inning, and Warriors answered back by scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the first. After four innings The Duke's had scored 13 runs, Warriors kept up by scoring 18 runs. After 8 innings Duke's took the lead by adding 11 runs while holding the Warriors 2 runs. The score going into the ninth inning was Duke's 27, Warriors 20.

Warriors shut the Duke's down in the top of the ninth with no runs. Warriors made a big effort to come from behind by scoring 5 runs, had tying runs on base when Duke's Team Manager Steve Hill  changed pitchers. Willie Morton, in relief of Jerry Witter set up a perfect double play ground ball to save the game. Final score was Duke's 27-Warriors 25.

Braves are now off a long road trip of six games to face the Cobra’s.  Manager Tom Capozzi lined this up with Larry Chrest leading off followed by Fred Dampier, Jim Laffoon, Gerry DeRidder, Ken Webber, Ed Segal, Jack Minder, Pat Accetta, Bobby Castillega, Ron Thompson, B.J. Kalister, Bill Bowley, and Capozzi.  Braves Manager Larry Strait’s players took the field with Dick Newton, Strait, Torok, Bill McLellan, Joe Peski, Herb O., Joe LeTourneau, Stan Michalski, Norm Learn, Pat Lopccolo, Jerry Anderws, Don LaMay, and Gary Burtner.  Leo Krieger was on the IR list and sat with the fans in the stands.

Dampier started the hitting with a double, Laffoon and DeRidder followed with singles, and infield out and a base rap off the bat of Segal produced two runs for the Cobra’s.  Newton led off the bottom of the inning with a single, a  Torok base hit followed, then a drive to deep left center field off the bat of McLellan for a Home Run.  End of one Brave’s 3 Cobras 2.  Both teams posted 0’s in the second.  In the third B.J. singled, followed by a fielder’s choice and base hits from Capozzi and Chrest.  Dampier then had a sac-fly and hits from Laffoon and DeRidder drove in the 3^rd run of the inning.  Hits from Andrews, Burtner, and Strait resulted for a run for the Braves in the bottom of the inning.  Cobras were here held scoreless for the next two frames and the Braves posted a run in each of those two innings.  In the fifth Cobras Dampier singled and a Home Run off the bat of Laffoon tallied 2 runs.  Michalski led off the bottom of the frame with a single, and base hits from Learn and Andrews scored a run for the Braves.  Score now tied at 7 all after seven innings.

Slugger Bowley led off with a single as did Capozzi to start the 8^th, and Dampier blasted a long Home Run to take a 3 run lead.  Bottom of the inning McLellan a long fly out to left field, then singles from Peski, Herb O, and LeTourneau produced a run.  A hard hit grounder off the bat of the next hitter was turned into a double play ending the game.  Final Score Cobras 10 Braves 8. 
Leading hitters for Cobras: Dampier and Laffoon both 3 for 4 and an HR for both, DeRidder 4 for 4, Castillega 3 for 4.

Leading hitters for Braves:  Newton, Herb O, Michalski all 2 for 4, McLellan 2 for 4 2B, Andrews and Burtner both 2 for 3.                                                                            Good Pitching from Thompson and B.J. for the Cobras and Lopiccolo for the Braves keeping the hitters guessing.

Tuesday, February 5th

King vs Fabian. Kings jumped out strong plating 3 in the top of 1st. But Fabe's came back with 3 in the bottom on a 2 run homer by Boswell , a triple by Vanderhyde and sac fly by Levesque after 4 innings it was 8-5 in favor of Fabe's Flyers (soon to be the ridge runners)  the Kings put up 5 goose eggs after that as the Flyers played pretty flawless defense as witnessed by a left center sunfield catch made by Travis F almost sitting on his butt. Larry Wells also pitched a fine game as usual. The Flyers went on to score 4 runs in the 6th and 8th for a final of 16-5. Cathy McDonald also stayed with a sun fly ball in left field and made a fine grab.

Team Davis came out hitting, scoring 6 runs total the first 2 innings and 5 runs in the 3,4,5,innings. The hits were pouring out in the 1st inning Rivera and Rad had singles, a double by Netzel follow by hits by Sequin and J.D scoring 5 in the third. Another 5 runs led by a double by Sequin in the 4 and 5 inning Team Davis put the game away with a triple by Shirer and doubles by Tony Q and Essenmacher and the hot hitting by Jacobson. Team Hamilton got hot in the 4&5 inning scoring 9 runs led by a triple by Rabideau and 2 doubles by Ron Ramos in the 4&5 inning . Leading hitters for Team Hamilton - Hamilton 3/4 and Jeff Stier 3/4 good game. Team Keller big scoring inning was in the 7th with and Triple by Gutenberger a double by Ferrande 2 doubles by Shier. Leading hitters for Team Keller - Brock 3/3 good game fellas.  For Team Davis - Leading hitters Sequin 4/4 Jacobson 4/4 J.D3/3 Guzzo 3/4 Shirer 3/4 , Netzel 3/4, Rivera 3/5 and Rad 3/5 . Good Defense and hitting Team Davis .

Friday, February 1st

It was so refreshing to see Larry Powell out there cheering for his team being run by the now famous Freddy Gonzales. He had to leave about half way thru as he was getting tuckered. THANKS LARRY. Great to see you. 

The game started off with a 4-4 tie after 2 innings and Powell went up 6-4 after 3. Then Fabes put on their hitting shoes and scored 10 in the next 3 innings and looked to be pulling away. But Powell put up a nickel in the 6th to pull closer but put up goose eggs the last 3 innings as Fabe's played solid defense. Final of 15-11 Fabes Flyers which is going to be renamed The Ridge Runners in honor of Ridge Energy. GOTTA SUPPORT THOSE SPONSORS. Some fantastic catches made by Vanderhyde, Travis F. and Wayne Vorhes. Way to go guys.

Friday, February 1st

After the Braves were scoreless in the 1st inning, the Dukes plated one run on a hit by Ray Roy and then two out hitting by Dave Hartley and Justin Mears. Score 1-0 Dukes.

The Braves Bill McLellan led off the 2nd inning followed by back to back doubles by Joe Peskie and Herb O for two runs to take the lead 2-1. Hits by Danny Parker, Ken Gelinas, Dean Schapler and Jerry Witter around a walk by Alf Gibbons allowed the Dukes to retake the lead 4-2 after two.

The Dukes extended their lead to 7-2 when hits by Ray Roy, Bob Skidmore, Steve Hill, and Willie Morton plated three, after 3.

The Braves cut the lead to 7-6 with hits by the bottom of their order, Norm Learn and Larry Strait and then a double by McLellan and a triple by Peskie. The Dukes came firing back with 4 of their own on 5 straight hits to extend their lead to 11-6 after four on hits by Gibbons, Jerry Remington, Gelinas, Schapler and John Merritt,

The 5th saw the Braves push one across on a double by Frank Jacobs and a single by Pat LoPiccolo. The Dukes stayed hot posting adding 4 more their big Hit was a Skidmore home run. Score 15-7 Dukes.

The teams cooled in the 6th before the Dukes tacked on a 5 spot to run their lead to 20- 7 after Seven. 

The Braves mounted a com back in the 8th putting up 4, started by LoPicclo's 3rd straight hit and hits by Stan Michalski and Jerry Andrews making it 20-11 Dukes. The Dukes added 3 more in the bottom of the 8th to finish their scoring at 23 -11. The Braves could not score in the 9th . Final score 23-11 Dukes.
