FRIDAY MARCH 4th on FIELD A
As expected, the game between the Expos and the Cubs was a great game with the lead changing hands many time.  Lots of hitting and good fielding plays on both teams.  Cubs took the league lead in attendance with RED Ed’s Army and Don LaMay’s family. Cubs supporters numbered in the high 20’s close to 30.  RED ED Guspyt had a great game going 4 for 4 and making about 6 or 7 catches playing left field.  The final score by my records was Expos 23 and Cubs 22. A good time was had by all.

I have scheduled a makeup game on Field A for Don Lamay and Elmer Black. Don and Elmer did not get to play on Friday, Feb 19th because the college girls needed Field A. Their game will be at the regular time and will be nine innings. Shirts should be worn based on the schedule for February 19th. No regular team players are eligible for the pool.

It seems like every game is a tight battle for first place, today's tilt between Matta's 11 and Freddy's Angels was no different.  A 2 run blast by Doerbaum put Matta's boys out to an early lead.  (He must not like Palm trees because he is trying to knock over the one beyond the center field fence).  The Angels answered with 5 in the 2d and 4th and 4 in the fifth, to bump Pinnick off the bump (we don't really have a bump, just a screen).  Doerbaum relieved and put up 3 zeros on the Angels in the 6th, 7th and 8th.  Matta's boys hung a  6 spot in the 5th and 3 more in the 6th to set up an exciting finish with the Angels up by 1.  Matta's boys scored 2 in the top of the 9th featuring a booming Seguin double off the left field fence, to take a 16-15 lead into the home half of the 9th.  However after a leadoff double by Jacobson followed by another double by Quinones the game was tied.  With no out Matta went to the playbook and issued 2 intentional walks to load the bases for the wily veteran  Zelazny who brought his 4 for 4 bat with him and after a mighty swing and miss delivered the clutch game winning sacrifice fly.  Angels win 17-16.  Brock who battled all day gets the win, Doerbaum who pitched very well in relief (and didn't see much to hit after the first), took the hard luck loss.  Matta's  leading hitters:  Matta 3-4 and a BB,  Stier 3-5 3b, Doerbaum 2-2 HR, 2BB SacF, Gazerek 4-5, Seguin 3-5 2b, Thiery 3-5 3b.......Angels:  Witmer 3-5, Jacobson 5-5 2b, Quinones 4-5 2b, Deemie 3-4 3b, Zelazny 4-4 GWSacF.

Field B Tuesday March 1st   Simon Vs LaMay

Many historical events took place in March, including: the Boston Massacre, the first ever telephone call, the murder of Julius Caesar and the invention of the polio vaccine. The Eiffel tower opened in March of 1889, and the invention of Coca Cola occurred in March of 1886.  There was no historical event taking place today on Field B.  Manager Simon being the home team took the field and batted in this order:  Simon, Altemose, Reagan, Vandenberg. Accetta, Fryzowicz, Navarro, Bloom, O’Callahan, Bowley, Lopiccolo, and Merritt.  LaMay’s team stepped up to the plate in this order: Andrews, Thompson, Laffoon, Shaffer, Taylor, Miller, Guspyt, Jones, Kline, Leggett, Welton, Moots, L. Baker, G. Baker.

LaMay’s Cubs started the game with singles off the bats of Andrews, Thompson, and Laffoon.  A Shaffer sack fly drove in the 1st run of the inning.  Three more singles by Taylor, Miller and Jones produced 4 runs for the visitors.  Simon’s guys had singles from Altemose, Vandenberg, and Accetta to tally a run for the home team.  After holding the Cubs scoreless in the second Simon’s guys scored two more runs on four straight singles from Bloom, O’Callahan, Bowley and Lopiccolo.  After two the score was LaMay 4 Simon 3.

The third started with a single off the bat of G. Baker, than base raps from Andrews, Taylor and Miller put 2 more runs on the scoreboard for the Cubs and the Simon’s guys came back with another run of their own.  6 to 4 for the Cubs.  Both team were scoreless in the fourth.  Cubs added 5 runs in the 5th to take control of the game.

Standing tall like the Eiffel Tower today was Derek Jones at 3rd base for the Cubs. Great day of fielding and hitting. It was a good game played well by both teams.  The fact that the final score was 14 to 4 showed a lot of good defense on both teams.

Leading Hitters:  Andrews, 4 for 4, Laffoon 3 for 3 SF, Taylor 4 for 4, Miller 3 for 4 and Jones 3 for 4.  Reagan 2 for 4, Vandenberg 4 for 4, Bloom 3 for 4, and Bowley 3 for 4.  Winning Pitcher Kline.
