Last Dance in January

We've come a little more than 1/3 of the way through the winter 2013 season and the weather has been very Florida like.  Let's hope it stays that way through March at least.

Field E

Field E was the site of a hotly contested game between the Nick Matta led Rangers and the Red Sox skippered by Jeff Simon. The Rangers got it started early when Kurt Coffman lead off the game with a single followed by a HR from John Goodhue.  The Sox stormed back in the bottom of the 1st with singles from Steve Hill and Al Andrews, doubles by Tom Hamilton and the red hot Denny Shaffer, George Radlien topped off the scoring with a sac fly. After shutting down the Rangers in the second, the Sox got 4 more with a 3 run HR from Steve Hill followed by a solo HR by Tom Hamilton.
Joe Scores
The Rangers got 2 more in the 3rd the key hit being delivered by Coffman with a double.  Both teams went quickly and quietly in the 4th. The 5th saw the Rangers start their move with 4 singles and a double, by Joe D'Herin, plating 4 runs.  The Sox tied the score at 9 when Tom Hamilton led off the inning with a walk, and eventually scoring on a sac fly by Donny Held.
Don drives one deep
The Sox took the lead again in the 6th, after the Rangers got only 1, in their half of the frame, with 7 straight batters reaching base, including 6 singles. The Sox added 2 more in the 7th, with a double by Denny Shaffer and then 3 singles from Andrews, Radlien and Hite.
The Sox held a 7 run lead starting the 8th, but no lead is safe when playing the "Never say die" Rangers.  They got 7 runs in the 8th when 10 players reach base, featuring 7 singles, 2 fielders choices and a double by Jim Goodhue.  The Sox failed to score in the 8th, so the 9th began with the score knotted at 16.   The Rangers got 7 more runs, sending 11 men to the plate.  The big hits were provided by Juan Rivera and Joe D'Herin's triples.  The Sox could only answer with a solo HR from Don Held to close out the scoring 23-17.

    Burning Bats?

Well, some seriously hot bats anyway even if Nick Matta did sacrifice a bat to the softball gods before the game.

     Field B

The early morning fog had burnt off by the time the game on Field B started. The sun was its usual tricky self. The batters were able to raise their hand if they could not see the pitch and the umpires could call it a no pitch. The Rays managed by Larry Powell were the visiting team and the leadoff batter, Eddie Gazarek, started the game with a nice hit. Frank Jacobs, Don Erb and Art Zakrowski followed with hits but only two runs were scored by the Rays. The Tigers, managed by Don Witmer, were not to be outdone in the first inning. The leadoff batter, Raul Torres got on by a walk and Don Keller and Chuck Duff had nice hits to plate two runs for the Tigers. The game stayed close until the7th inning when the Rays bats got hot. They scored five runs in the seventh inning and five more runs in the eight inning. The Tigers, who scored 33 runs on Tuesday, could not get anything going at the bat today. The final score was Rays 20 and Tigers 12.

    Thinking about an Entertainment Book?

The Rays did a great job in team hitting today. They were led by Eddie Gazarek 5 for 5, Rick Brock 4 for 4,Don Erb and Art Zakrowski 4/5 and Frank Jacobs 3 for 5. There were a bunch of Triples. The rest of the team batted around .500.

The Tigers were led by Jimmy Laffoon 3 for 4, Don Keller 3 for 5, Chuck Duff and Kenny Ota were 2 for3. Kenny Ota hit an in the park home run with a sharp line drive between the outfielders.

    Field D

The contest on Field “D” between the Red Sox- Rangers and Angels was a wing, ding, doodler.  Both the Sox and Angels started out like a “house on fire”, scoring 5 runs in the first two innings.  The Rangers bats were a bit sluggish, coach Matta thinks the team is reading too many of their press clippings.
Meanwhile, the Angels found the long ball early and often, hitting 3 doubles in the first inning by Gonzalez, Drouilard and Wells.  In the 2nd inning Gonzalez refused to cool down, hitting a home-run. Toro decided to spread his angel wings and went yard, as well.  Russ King joined in the halo party and smashed a ball into the gap for a triple.

After 2 innings the score was Red Sox 10, Rangers 6 and Angels 10.
The Rangers climbed back into the game scoring 3 runs in the 3rd.  Not to be outdone, the hot halos came back and added 3 runs of their own, in the bottom of the frame and 5 more runs in the 4th. The Red Sox, who had been swinging red hot bats, in the first two innings, went on a mini vacation. They were blanked in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings.
After 5 innings the score was Red Sox 10, Rangers 11 and Angels 20.

    Nick takes a cut
That brings us into the 6th inning, when the fireworks erupted. The Sox bats came back from their mini trip to the Bahamas.  Consecutive base hits by Andrews, Radlein, Hite and Simon produced 2 runs. Mohan and Wheeler joined in on the fun, producing a couple more hits and the Sox gathered 2 more runs. They jumped ahead of the Rangers with a four run, sixth inning.

The Rangers then came to bat in the middle of the 6th inning. It is so dependable that you can set your clock on the fact that the Rangers bats will come to life, late in the game.  Home-runs by Dampier, Finnegen and Pinnick sky rocketed the Rangers back into the game.  All twelve of the Rangers players batted in the 6th inning, producing 9 runs and tying the game…….temporarily.
    Tom holds Joe at Third

The Angels came to bat in the bottom of the 6th inning and hit like Archangels. They scored three runs and recaptured the lead. The big blow came off the bat of Les Jacobson, who hit one so deep only a real angel could field it.
    Les Winds Up

After 6 innings the score was Red Sox 14, Rangers 20 and Angels 23.

In the seventh inning, the Sox added a run and it was up to their defense to try and stop the Rangers from beating the Angels.  The inning started bad for them when the Rangers first batter, Don Ing, reached base on an error. Sox pitcher, George Radlein, was up for the challenge though. He sandwiched in two Ks, in between two hits and with the bases loaded he was able to get the last out, ending the game.

Final Score: Red Sox 15, Rangers 21 and Angels 23.

    Eddie had a good day!

    Field E

Today was the type of day where you bring your lunch bucket, roll up your sleeves and go to work playing ball.  Is that even possible, working hard and playing softball ?  All three teams did exactly that, playing a close game and working hard to keep things close, through six innings. The Rays were the best team out of the gate. They scored their first 3 batters, Bill Rutan, Frank Jacobs and Don Erb, in the first inning.  Erb had the big hit that inning, with a screaming line drive double.  He later scored on a hit by Brock, who was batting sixth.

The Rangers took the lead in the third inning, after scoring 5 runs in both the second and third frames. For the Rangers, the big blow in the third came from Ron Butler, who pounded the apple, doubled and drove in two runs.  Not to be out done, the Angels heated up the bats in the bottom of the third, scoring 5 runs of their own.  Big Les Jacobson hit a home-run for the halos.  After three innings of play the game stood at Rangers 10- Rays 8 and Angels 8. The Rangers never gave up the lead after the third inning. The other teams kept a close pace though. Brock went yard for the Rays and Don Erb dented a palm tree on the other side of the fence, with a line drive home-run that made a thud as it hit off the tree.

As the game went into the final stretch, the score was Rangers 13- Rays 11 and Angels 12.  It was anyone’s game to win as the Rangers came to bat in the top of the seventh inning.  The Rangers are starting to make a habit out of closing strong; they did so last game and they did it again today.  The Angels, who were in the field, had played a solid game for the most part, defensively.  However, they came a bit unraveled in the seventh and after a few timely hits by the Rangers and a few errors by the Angels; five runs had crossed the plate for the Rangers.  The Rays then came to bat and scored a duce, afterwards, the Angels managed to score 1 run. The final score: Rangers 18- Rays 13 and Angels 13. To quote a writer I saw on the internet;” Winning is great, but I’d much rather tie than lose, because losing is the worst outcome possible.”

    Field B

Sarasota, Florida is known as the home of the American Circus.  Well, cue the calliope music, I am here to tell you the Greatest Show On Earth moved a bit eastward, to Winter Haven, Field B, for Friday’s game between the Rays (Hitting team), the Red Sox (Sitting team) and the Rangers (Home team).  We had juggling catches, stunning feats of speed, power and ability, as well as a big finish to the game.
The Sox jumped out to an early lead over their competitors, scoring 4 runs in each of their first two at bats.  If that was not enough Tommy Hamilton, playing SS for the Sox, made a great behind the back catch on a ball hit by Ron Butler, (Rangers), into shallow left field. The Red Sox defense and solid pitching by George Radlein, helped keep the Rangers in check through most of the game.
The Red Sox were like the circus strong man, seemingly unbeatable in this game.  They had a feat of marvel turned in by Denny Shaffer, who hit for the cycle, great job Denny.  The “Ringling Brothers”, Red Sox, added 2 more runs in the third inning and 5 more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.  After five full innings of play the score stood at Rays 9 – Red Sox 20 and Rangers 8.  It looked like the Rays and Rangers would have to fight it out for 2nd place.
The last two innings were a different story.  The lion was let out of the cage, as the Rangers bats came to life.  The “never say die” Rangers scored 6 runs in the sixth inning and 10 runs in the seventh inning, to capture the win.  The big blows came from Tommy Wise, who hit an inside the park grand slam and from Regis Finnegen’s game winning hit.  Regis drove in Kirk Coffman all the way from first base, after hitting a double, with two outs, in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Final Score:  Rays 13- Red Sox 23- Rangers 24

Then again in the right hand column under the droid app blurb and the picture of the 'commish' is a  'Links' section that has a link called 'Memorials'.  This section contains pictures and obits of some of our friends that have passed away.  If you would like to offer an obit and picture for this section just email the info to whseniorsoftball@gmail.com and if the board is ok with it, we'll post it there.
    4. Under the Memorials link, there's another link called 'Bob's List' (Craig is not the commish). On this list you can post anything softball related that you want to sell i.e. bats, gloves, bags, balls, etc. You should also check out this link if you want to buy something.  The transactions are strictly between you and the seller.  The league is only providing a communications medium for you.  In order to post items for sale simply send an email to whseniorsoftball@gmail.com   You can also attach a picture but be sure to include your contact information and your asking price.

    Field C

Field C hosted a three team contest between the Rangers, Angels and Tigers. If the first inning was any sign of things to come, it was going to be a long day at the park. The Rangers (Nick Matta) started the game with five runs. The Angels ( Freddie Gonzalez) answered with four runs and the Tigers (Don Witmer) answered with four runs.

But as softball goes, the second inning was not as fruitful for the Rangers or Tigers. No runs were scored by either team. The Angels however never looked back after the first inning. They continued to score in every inning except the third inning and ran away with the game with a final score of 14-26-5.

Not only were the Angels bats working, their defense was stellar. Juan Toro at shortstop made several outstanding plays and turned one double play by himself. Les Jacobsen, who was playing middle infielder, was everywhere on the field. Les made several good defensive plays and combined with Juan to turn a double play.

The first four batters for the Angels were 5 for 5. Freddie Gonzalez, Juan Toro, Les Jacobsen and Pat Drouilard were unstoppable. Freddie had One in the park home run, Juan had Two in the park home runs and Les had Four Doubles. Pat had a Triple, a Double and Three singles. Greg Denny and Larry Wells were 4 for 5 and Richard Marino blasted a ball over the left fielder's head to score the fifth run in the fourth inning. The Angels bats were working today.

Leading hitters for the Rangers were Jose Rivera, Freddie Dampier and Regis Finnegan at 3 for 4. Nick Matta went 2 for 3 and Jack Benson was 2 for 2 with a sac fly.

Leading hitters for the Tigers were Jimmy Laffoon, 3 for 3. Raul Torres, Herb O and Mike Gatto were 2 for 3
