Three Teams Today

Another hot day at the field!  At the end of four innings the score was

In the fourth, Alumbaugh cleared the bases for the Field team with a clean homeroom but his run did not count.  Sorry Brent only 5 runs an inning.

In the 5th inning, the Hit team scored 1 and Sit was scoreless.  Matta took over pitching for the Sit team and held the Field team to 1.  In the sixth, Hit team scorred 2 but Sit team exploded for 7 and Matta's team held the Field team to 1.

The seventh inning was suspenseful.  The Sit team scored 4 runs giving them a two run lead.  The Sit team had to defend their lead against the Field team.  The first batter fielded out.  Alumbaugh got up and scored another home run.  The next three batters singled.  The next batter hit into a force out at second.  Two outs, two runs in, men at 1st and 3rd. tie score.  Steve Hill hit a resounding single to move the winning run.

No Games This Morning

This morning's games are cancelled.   The fields are under water today after last night's rain.  See you Friday.

Two teams today

Two teams today

25 players started the game and one pulled muscle made it 24 to end the nine inning contest.  I guess you could say it was hotly contested.  It was hot anyway.

I don't recall any homers.   The home team was down 4 runs going into the bottom of the ninth and made a run at it but came up just one run shy.

Threes Again

Yep three is our summer time number... 3 team game again this time with a total of 35 players.

Whoa Larry,  where did your hitting go?  There was a fair amount of slugging going on today but not by Larry's squad.  I guess it was Larry's turn to serve up cream puffs.

Juan Torres (batting lefty for a change) hit a round tripper down the right field line in the first inning and in the 7th inning Freddy Gonzalez showed his speed, scoring on a liner that made it through the right center-field gap  ... way to go guys.  I also recall that Bob Zelazney bounced a 299 foot shot off the fence for a triple that cleared the bases followed immediately by a similar long smash from Tom Wise.  There were likely others that I don't recall not to mention a handful of doubles.  The home team made a valiant comeback but fell a run short in the bottom of the last inning.

I think the total was 32 today.  Enough for three squads anyway.

Well, Ole Larry had the hitting behind his pitching mastery today.  That makes about three of the last four for Mr Wells.

Sluggers today included Tom Wise and Brett Almbaugh.  They both hit round trippers in the first inning.

Oh Yeah and I hate to mention the Special K but Freddy Gonzalez took one of his downtown swings and came up empty for a third strike.  Don't see that too often. Actually you don't get Freddy out too often for that matter.

Post 4th of July

With the holiday now behind us and nobody we know caught a stray bullet, you'd think we'd get a better turnout.  Maybe everyone OD'd on the ribs, burgers and dogs.

For today we had enough players to field 3 teams of 9 with Don Witmer playing middle infield for all three teams and the sitting team supplying a right fielder.  That is except for the fielding team ... Sam Lopez came in from the sitting team to pitch.

Anyway here's the scores.

Today's slugging was a little disappointing except that Sam Lopez hit a triple that turned into a round tripper when the Commish threw a strike into the third base dugout.  So it goes some days.  

I guess Sam was the story today but  Larry Wells wins again. Good Job Sam and Larry!

Pre Fourth of July

Well, I got to play ball with my friends again today ... back to third grade playing ball with Jimmy, Johnny, Billy and Sammy. 

We had the usual 3 team game. Usual for the summertime that is and it was hot hot hot. Games on days like this should have beer involved.

The sluggers today included Jose Riviera, Frank Jacobs and Larry Grabb.  They each had inside the park homers.

The final scores were as follows

The Oldest Kids I Know

Senior citizens playing softball.  What is it about baseball (or its derivatives) that draws us so.  It's  a kid's game, played out on sandlots, backyards and school grounds from kindergarten northwards.  Bases made from an old shingle or even a brick and ground rules involving windows or stonewalls.  I can remember 3^rd grade, playing baseball behind Center School and cheering the shot off the bat of my friend Bobby or Billy or Sammy.  I remember that in those days my team was the Brooklyn Dodgers, Duke Snyder, Gil Hodges and Pee Wee Reese.  And I remember how brokenhearted I was to find out that they moved to the west coast, someplace called Chavez Ravine.  Instant Yankee fan.  They were great days for Yankee fans too, Mickey Mantle, Moose Skowron, Phil Rizzuto, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford.

Now I'm well past 60 and I'm still cheering for Bobby, Billy and Sammy not to mention the Reggies, Jimmys, and Donnys.   66 years old and I call my friends names like we're in third grade.  I love it. A lifetime of infield fly rules, sliding into third and double plays and I still know my friends best as Freddie, Johnny, and Denny;  Kids names, third grade names, and why not.  It's baseball, it's a kids game and I wouldn't miss a Tuesday or a Friday playing ball with my friends (still kids), unless it's rained out of course.
